  • Online technology markets are expected to provide technology suppliers with opportunities of external technology exploitation by reducing the transaction costs caused from technology transactions. This study empirically analyzes the characteristics of patents provided to the online technology market in order to identify the influences of the existence of online technology market on the patent exploitation strategy of technology suppliers. A sample of patent database is drawn from the National Technology Bank which was established as a public online market for technology. Main findings are that the propensity of patents offered to the online marketplace is higher in the cases where the patents are obsolescent, are non-core, and that consist of more claims and inventors. Through the findings of this study the existence of online technology market is identified to enable the external exploitation of firms" non-used technologies.

  • The balance between exploration for new possibility and exploitation for existing certainty is an important issue in strategy, innovation, R&D as well as organization learning. Among the convergence trends of technologies, many firms seek to have the wider technological knowledge assets and the deeper technology capabilities for the sustainable competitive advantage at the same time. While firms plan technology portfolio strategies, they should consider the attribute of the technology. Nanotechnology, a cutting-edge technology, is a general purpose technology, unlike conventional product-oriented technologies. This empirical study was focused on how multi-national firms' exploration and exploitation strategies for nanotechnology affect their innovative and financial performance. It uses multiple regression analysis on panel data. This result shows that the more diversified and specialized nanotechnology as platform technology is positively related to their innovative and financial performance, unlike the research results for product-oriented technologies. In addition, exploratory innovation is more effective to firm performance than exploitation. This implies how global firms can manage effectively platform technology strategies under the constraints of resources.

  • The revenue histogram of venture businesses is shifting from bell-shaped normal distribution to power-law distribution, which implies that the fitness landscape of the venture businesses ecosystem is changing to be more rugged terrain. We argue that the firm should adopt both exploitation (fast follower) and exploration (or first mover) strategies not to get stuck in local maxima in the rugged fitness landscape from the complex system perspective. By designing and performing agent-based modeling simulation experiments which consist of three types of agents (new technologies, entrepreneurs, and consumers), we demonstrated that the ambidexterity strategy showed the highest performance score in three of four different environment except 'Fast Widening' case where the exploitation strategy showed the highest performance score under low technology appropriation and fast disruptive technology development speed. By investigating the financial and other statistics of 617 top venture businesses who have earned 100B won or higher annual revenue, we concluded that 82% and 9% of firms are bent on the exploitation and exploration strategy.

  • Previous studies on strategic alliance formation have largely overlooked the effects that organizations' routine development can have on the relationship between organizations' network position and their alliance ambidexterity strategy. This study extends ambidexterity research by adding internal and network perspectives and examining their cumulative effects on alliance ambidexterity. We first acknowledge the interplay between organizations' internal knowledge exploration/exploitation strategies and organizations' alliance ambidexterity and determine that organizations with a high level of internal knowledge breadth are more likely to make focused alliance decisions. Second, our analysis of 145 US-based information technology organizations with an active alliance behavior reveals that having well-formed routines as a result of previous collaborations strengthens the tendency of brokerage organizations to follow alliances that focus on either exploration or exploitation. Although most alliance studies have commonly argued in favor of an ambidextrous approach, this study provides critical evidence that both internal knowledge exploration/exploitation strategies and development of routines constrain organizations' alliance formation decisions, guiding them towards a more focused approach.

  • This paper examines the effect of innovation strategy and R&D organization on the innovation performances in the Korean small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs). For the SMEs with limited resources and capabilities, the one of key strategic issues is to allocate innovation resources to the exploitation of existing technological capabilities and/or the exploration of new technological capabilities. Based upon survey data from 769 SMEs, this study investigated relationships among exploitation and exploration strategies, the existence of R&D organization, and innovation performance. Exploration is positively related to product and process innovation performances across the industrial sectors. However, exploitation is positively related only to the process innovation performance in the traditional manufacturing sectors. The existence of R&D organizations has positive effects on the product innovation performance and not on the process innovation performance. Finally, it discusses the managerial implications, the limitations of this study and the future research directions.

  • Alliance formation has been recognized as an important strategy for firms who seek to survive through acquisition of sustainable competitive advantages. Specifically in high-tech industries, firms may consider formation of strategic alliances in order to access valuable external knowledge. These firms tend to be situated in a dilemma that they should choose between exploration and exploitation, which are two types of strategic choices suggested by March (1991). Working out the dilemma has been extensively discussed in the area of strategy or organization learning. Recently, however, an increasing number of studies have stressed on a balance between exploration and exploitation. Regarded as 'ambidextrous organizations' (Lavie and Rosenkopf, 2006), these firms that simultaneously pursue exploration and exploitation have emerged in high-tech industries, and many studies have provided evidence of positive association between organizational ambidexterity and firm performance. In the strategic alliance research, accordingly, scholars began to pay attention to the balanced choice between exploration-and exploitation-oriented alliances. Given these backgrounds, this study examines the relationship between alliance ambidexterity and firm performance. While previous research approached alliance ambidexterity mainly from the number of alliances, our study suggests ambidexterity in terms of alliance portfolio and alliance partner. Our dataset consists of biotechnology or pharmaceutical firms in the United States, which spans time period between 1990 and 2005. We conduct panel data analysis. The results show the strong link between alliance ambidexterity and firm performance, highlighting the balance between exploration and exploitation when firms make strategic decisions.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the strategy of alliance portfolio and to compare the firm's characteristics and internal capabilities of each strategy for the successful utilization of alliance. We conducted a cluster analysis and ANOVA on 477 samples, which have alliance experience among the manufacturers responding to the Business Survey by Statistical Office in both 2012 and 2013. As a result of the analysis, it was found that firms have alliance portfolio based on strategy such as exploration, exploitation, and ambidextrity. There are statistically significant differences in the number of patents, technology capability, marketing capability, and global capability among the alliance portfolio strategy type.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide an explanation for the association between the characteristics of a network and the type of innovation by considering the effect of absorptive capacity. To do so, this study examined the moderating effects of absorptive capacity on the characteristics of network-innovation relationship in a technical-driven venture company. In order to obtain a better understanding about consequences caused by interfirm network, information was obtained from 169 Korean IT venture companies. Results confirmed that the network diversity is positively associated with exploration. Our results also suggested that the network strength is positively associated with exploitation. Finally, we found a positive two-way interaction between absorptive capacity and the network diversity-exploration relationship. Then, we discussed implications and directions for future research.

  • The paper proposes a hybrid approach of artificial bee colony (ABC) and grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm for multi-objective and multidimensional engine optimization of a converted plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The proposed strategy is used to optimize all emissions along with brake specific fuel consumption (FC) for converted parallel operated diesel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). All emissions particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) are considered as optimization parameters with weighted factors. 70 hp engine data of NOx, PM, HC, CO and FC obtained from Oak Ridge National Laboratory is used for the study. The algorithm is initialized with feasible solutions followed by the employee bee phase of artificial bee colony algorithm to provide exploitation. Onlooker and scout bee phase is replaced by GWO algorithm to provide exploration. MATLAB program is used for simulation. Hybrid ABC-GWO algorithm developed is tested extensively for various values of speeds and torque. The optimization performance and its environmental impact are discussed in detail. The optimization results obtained are verified by real data engine maps. It is also compared with modified ABC and GWO algorithm for checking the effectiveness of proposed algorithm. Hybrid ABC-GWO offers combine benefits of ABC and GWO by reducing computational load and complexity with less computation time providing a balance of exploitation and exploration and passes repeatability towards use for real-time optimization.
