  • The purpose of this paper was to analyze the development trends of gene therapy. The possibility of technological development and commercialization of gene therapy has been increased along with the success of Human Genome Project. A lot of gene-therapy-based R&D and clinical trials have been advanced. The US and EU have led the global technological development, and Korea is in early stage although many institutions and firms have participated in this area.

  • As science and technology are emphasized as national competitiveness, major nations designate new growth engine industry and establish the effective investment and the development strategy to enhance industrial development and competitiveness through science and technology. New industrial sectors such as Biotechnology and renewable energy have been spot lighted as major new growth engines and this competitive situation is getting fiercer. Universities and research institutions in each country selected and announced the future promising technological field which will produce ripple effect in the future on a regular basis. In Korea, various research institutions continue to select and announce the promising technological fields. In this study, we would like to study the method to derive the promising technological field in the field of biotechnology spotlighted as a new growth engine by utilizing patent information. We would like to derive the major technological field by collecting domestic and international patents in the field of biotechnology using IPC code based technological classification and identifying bio technological trends utilizing text mining method for analysis of technological development trends with patents. Patent contour of US and Korea is compared and analyzed through analysis of text mining to derive the general technological development field in the field of biotechnology. After that, we would like to investigate research theme of promising biotechnology focused technological development through details on technological trends through in-depth analysis about technological field which draws interest more and more in Korea and other countries.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the trends of technological development in the field of portable multimedia player (PMP) through patent information of major countries, and evaluate the technological Position of PMP. In the first place, we will carry out a quantitative analysis in terms of the annual trend of patent applications in the field of PMP, the technological position of PMP through portfolio analysis, the share of patents by applicant, the worldwide innovation leader of major countries, and the patent trend by IPC. Secondly, we will measure the technological level of PMP using indicators including cites per patent (CPP), science linkage (SL), and patent family size (PFS). Finally, we will evaluate the directions of research or technology development and the technological competitiveness of major countries. This evaluation could give us some useful policy implications on the strategy of R&D in PMP.

  • Self-driving cars have three main functions. The first recognizes the surrounding environment, judge the risk, and lastly plans the drive path. Therefore, the driving operation is minimized. And it refers to a human friendly car capable of safe driving on its own. The reason for the need for self-driving car was to reduce traffic jams on limited roads and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Driving ahead of these self-driving car businesses can be expected to attract and expand the existing business and expand the new business and create new business opportunities for ICT firms. It is urgent for the concerned agencies to establish legal and institutional basis for self-driving cars. By doing so, new services could be provided to consumers. Therefore, this paper introduces the technological development trends for self-driving cars.

Technological Trends in Open 5G Fronthaul (개방형 5G 프론트홀 기술 동향)

  • Traditional centralized radio access network architecture used for 4G is based on Option 8, a functional split between PHY and RF. This option is commonly used with a fronthaul interface based on common public radio interface (CPRI) specifications; however, the increased data rates in 5G make this option impractical because of the fronthaul interface's high bandwidth requirement. Since CPRI specifications have many vendor-specific options, achieving multi-vendor interoperability becomes challenging. Open RAN (O-RAN) Alliance is developing novel open fronthaul interface specifications based on the functional split Option 7-2x, one of the intra-PHY split options, to relax the bandwidth requirement of the fronthaul interface and achieve multi-vendor interoperability. This article provides a brief overview of the various functional split options for 5G fronthaul that have been reported so far and existing fronthaul technologies. Further, the technological trends in the 5G open fronthaul interface is discussed, focusing on the O-RAN Alliance specifications under standardization.

  • In this research, policies, and technology trends associated with quantum computers were examined, and through this, implications for domestic methods were derived. It is not a guarantee that developing quantum computing technology suited for domestic use would be successful to emulate the success stories of technology-leading nations. Technology leaders like the United States, China, and Europe are putting together strategic technology blocks to compete for technological hegemony. Adapting to and exploiting this trend will help us develop future technologies and secure market competitiveness. The dominant technology in the area of quantum computing has not yet been established. In the future, there will be fair competition in every specific technology area. At this point, it may be claimed that making audacious decisions will still lead to technological superiority.

United States-China Competition for Technological Supremacy in Quantum Computing and Policy Trends (미중 기술패권 경쟁과 양자컴퓨팅 정책 동향)

  • The competition for technological supremacy is unfolding in the high-tech field, and quantum computing can be determinant for economic and security ripple effects. The United States and China, leaders in quantum computing, have developed this field through adequate policies. The United States has fostered quantum computing through government policies and competition among private companies, while China has secured world-class technology through large-scale government investment and attracting foreign talent. In quantum computing, securing talented people is essential to guarantee independent technology development regarding academic attributes and security. We analyze quantum computing policies in the United States and China on a timeline and determine their policy trends. In addition, the policies for securing talent in these countries are reviewed, and the policy effects are compared based on literature analysis. Through the analysis of policy cases between the United States and China, bilateral policy implications for Korea are delineated.

  • Lithium accounts for only 0.0017% of the earth crust, and it is produced in geographically limited regions such as South America, the United States, and China. Since the first half of 2017, the price of lithium has been continuously increasing, and with the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, lithium resources are expected to be depleted in the near future. In addition, economic blocs worldwide face intensifying scenarios such as competition for technological supremacy and protectionism of domestic industries. Consequently, Korea is deepening its dependence on China for core materials and is vulnerable to the influence of the United States Inflation Reduction Act. We analyze post-lithium secondary battery technologies that rely on more earth-abundant elements to replace lithium, whose production is limited to specific regions. Specifically, we focus on the technological status and issues of sodium-ion, zinc-air, and redox-flow batteries. In addition, research trends in post-lithium secondary batteries are examined. Post-lithium secondary batteries seem promising for large-capacity energy storage systems while reducing the costs of raw materials compared with existing lithium-based technologies.

A Language Model and Clue based Machine Learning Method for Discovering Technology Trends from Patent Text (특허 문서 텍스트로부터의 기술 트렌드 탐지를 위한 언어 모델 및 단서 기반 기계학습 방법)

  • Patent text is a rich source for discovering technological trends. In order to automate such a discovery process, we attempt to identify phrases corresponding to the problem and its solution method which together form a technology. Problem and solution phrases are identified by a SVM classifier using features based on a combination of a language modeling approach and linguistic clues. Based on the occurrence statistics of the phrases, we identify the time span of each problem and solution and finally generate a trend. Based on our experiment, we show that the proposed semantic phrase identification method is promising with its accuracy being 77% in R-precision. We also show that the unsupervised method for discovering technological trends is meaningful.
