  • Skin sooty dapple disease, a fungal disease that lowers Asian pear fruit quality, has emerged recently in Korea but has not yet been thoroughly characterized. This disease affects the surface of fruit, leaves, and young shoots of the Asian pear, typically appearing as a dark or pale black dapple on the fruit surface. The disease initiates on the fruit with small circular lesions that become bigger, eventually spreading to form large circular or indefinite lesions. Sparse dark or flourishing white-greyish aerial mycelia and appearance of a dark or pale black dapple on the fruit surface are typical signs of this disease. The disease was severe during cold storage of the Niitaka and Chuhwangbae varieties, but more limited on the Gamcheonbae and Hwangkeumbae varieties. To identify causal pathogens, 123 fungal isolates were obtained from lesions. The fungi that caused typical skin sooty dapple disease symptoms in our bioassay were identified. Based on their morphological characteristics, 74% of the isolates were Cladosporium sp. and 5-7 % of the isolates were Leptosphaerulina sp., Tripospermum sp., or Tilletiopsis sp. None of the isolates caused severe soft rot by injection to a wound plug, but some of the Cladosporium sp. isolates caused mild maceration. Therefore this microbiol complex cannot account for the soft rot also observed in stored fruits. The high frequency of isolation of Cladosporium sp. from disease tissues and bioassay on pear fruit surface suggest that Cladosporium sp. could be a major pathogen in the microbial complex associated with skin sooty dapple disease of the Asian pear in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sleep/wake behavior for shift workers in the iron and steel industry using wrist actigraph for 59 male workers on a continuous full-day three-team three-shift system of backward rotation including on-duty and off-duty periods. The wrist actigraph data were recorded for 15 days (l shift cycle) for each subject. The sleep length at home during night shift decreased significantly as compared to the morning or evening shifts. The night shift nap length increased significantly in all sections as compared to the morning or evening shifts. The nap length in the Steel Manufacturing Process and Rolling Process during night shift decreased significantly as compared to the Machine Maintenance Section, the Forwarding of Products Section, and the Field Management Section. However, the sleep length at home while off-duty period increased significantly. The percentage of nap length during night shift in the Rolling Process, Steel Manufacture Process, and the other three types of jobs was 16.0%, 20.4%, and about 50.0%, respectively. The nap length during night shift for the above 50 year olds increased significantly as compared to the below 50 year olds. Finally, we discussed the role of nap-taking during the burden on night shift workers and the increased difficulty in continuing their job.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of social support, loneliness, alcohol use and perceived health status in college students and to explore the relationships between the variables. The convenience sample consisted of 473 students attending a college located at Chonnam province. Data were collected by a structured questionnaire which included the PRO85-partⅡ Social Support Scale, revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, Alcohol frequency, Perceived Health Status Scale from June 10 to 25, 2001. And data were analyzed by SPSS/PC+program including descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The mean scores of social support, loneliness and perceived health status were 3.01($SD={\pm}0.31$), 2.08($SD={\pm}0.34$), 1.64($SD={\pm}0.65$) respectively. 2. Students in use of alcohol mostly reported that they had started a drinking in the period of high school(35.7%), motivated with friendship(32.6%) and drank with their friends(56.9%) in drinking frequency of 2-3times per a month(49.6%). 3. The students who have friend of the opposite sex were significantly more likely to have higher than the students having no friend of the opposite sex in scores of social support. 4. The scores of loneliness were significantly lower in female students than male students, in students with friend of the opposite sex than with no friend of the opposite sex. 5. There were significant negative correlations between social support and loneliness(r=-5.25, p<.000), and between loneliness and perceived health status(r=-0.93, p<.05), while there was a significant positive correlation between social support and perceived health status(r=1.01, p<.05). The findings suggested that supportive social support, especially lowering loneliness, would be a powerful nursing intervention in maintaining good health of college students. And, more variables affecting health status in college students will be identified with further research.

  • This study aims to conduct a investigation on the gusset of a Kimono sleeve to achieve excellent movability through an evaluation of its fit wearing by conducting comparative research in terms of the length of the gusset pattern according to sleeve angle, which having a great effect on the wearing and activity of the top of a Kimono sleeve. A prototype was manufactured by developing the basic Kimono sleeve based on the method of Ernestine Kopp's basic bodice pattern. The sleeve angles which was applied to the prototype pattern of the Kimono sleeve ware approximately $50^{\circ}$, $70^{\circ}$ and the gusset was diamond-shaped which has a width of 10cm and lengths of 9cm, 10cm and 11cm. As a result, in the case of $55^{\circ}$ of the sleeve angle, the angle was gradually increased as the length of gusset was extended, although, in the case of $68^{\circ}$ of the sleeve angle, there was not remarkable effects between increased gusset length and the value of the angle. This result could be analyzed that the gusset did not affect remarkably since the sufficient movability was gained with only the angle in the case of $68^{\circ}$. Also, in the results of experiment on $55^{\circ}$ angle, as 9cm, 10cm and 11cm of length of gusset commonly indicated over $70^{\circ}$ in average, it was found that the movability was obtained sufficiently in every part.
