The effects of refining load on the paper properties were investigated. HwBKP, SwBKP and SwUKP were refined with PFI mill at the load of 3.33 N/mm and 6.00 N/mm. Higher Scott bond was obtained at the higher refining load for three pulp used in this study. However any changes in the light scattering coefficient with the change of refining load were not observed. Although the effect of refining load on the formation index for SwUKP was not observed, higher refining load gave the better formation for HwBKP and SwBKP. The fiber mass and fiber crowding factor were not affected by the refining load. Higher apparent density and tensile index were obtained with the higher refining load. However, the higher refining load did not improve the tensile index at the same apparent density. The tear index was decreased with the increase of refining load.

The effect of soft nip calendering variables including pressure, temperature, nip residence time and moisture on newsprint properties was investigated. The change of bulk, opacity, smoothness, and gloss were determined. It was found that the influence of calendering pressure and temperature are more significant compare the Influence of sheet moisture content and nip residence time on newsprint properties. Calendering conditions of 16$0^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 78kg$_{f}$/cm of line load and 4ms of nip residence time were considered to be optimum conditions to obtain reasonable gloss and smoothness while minimizing the loss of bulk and opacity for newsprint.

The effect of soft nip calendering variables including pressure, temperature, nip residence time and sheet moisture on the properties of coated papers was investigated. The change of gloss, opacity, bulk and brightness were determined after calendering. Increase of calendering pressure and temperature increased gloss, but it decreased opacity, bulk and brightness of coated papers. Nip residence time and sheet moisture content showed similar effects on these properties. Calendering conditions of 16$0^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 146kg$_{f}$/cm of line load or less were found to provide optimum conditions to obtain reasonable gloss and smoothness while minimizing the loss of bulk and opacity for coated papers.

It was observed that drying temperature and curing time in the paper coating process as well as Tg of the latex used as a binder, greatly affected the properties of the coated paper such as roughness, paper and print gloss, K & N ink drop, and ink set-off. The higher drying temperature induced faster water evaporation and change in binding density, which caused an increase in paper roughness, ink gloss and ink set-off, but decrease in paper gloss and K & N ink drop. The increased curing time promoted latex filming and redistribution of the binder in coating layer. This increased pick strength and ink gloss, but decreased ink trapping. Finally, the higher Tg of the latex showed the wider changing range of these properties.

The objective of this study was to investigate the viscosity of coating colors and ink-jet printing properties with different coating colors with various blending ratios of silica based pigments. The volume of pigments was measured to evaluate the effect of the pigments on the viscosity of coating colors. Contact angle, the change of ink diameter, optical density, and the area and perimeter of a printed let-ter were evaluated to examine the effect of the ink absorption on the ink-jet printing properties. Generally, as the amount of silica pigments Increased the ink-jet printing quality improved. But this caused an increase of the overall coating viscosity.

The SPM could image the most detailed microstructure of a sample in a wet and dry state by measuring the interaction between the atoms on the sample surface and the extremely sharp probe tip. The refined fibre exhibited large wrinkles formed by fibrillar bundles, the disintegrated fibres extensively showed “scale-like features”. By using the Non-Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (NC-AFM) and Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM) including Phase Detection Microscopy (PDM) and Force Modulation Microscopy (FMM), it was possible to investigate surface topography, surface roughness and mechanical property (hardness or visco-elasticity) of fibre surface in detail. The PDM and FMM images showed that the disintegrated only fibre displayed uniform mechanical properties, whereas the refined one did not. The surface roughness of pulp fibres was higher in refined fibres than in disintegrated fibres due to the presence of external fibrils. These SPM images would be used to provide visual evidence of morphological change of a single fibre created during mechanical treatments such as refining, drying, calendering and so on.

Although design process is a creative work, it includes a lot of iterations. Statistics show that about 15 to 40 percent of the total design activity is spent on time-consuming retrieval of technical informations such as standard part, handbook, engineering equation, previous design and so on. On the other hand, product structure and parts specifications change with the design process, which also need to be traced accordingly. The BOM, design history, and all the relecant technical informations can be managed can be efficiently within a unified framework called configuration. This paper presents a prototype of a configuration manager which is a part of the engineering data management system for machine tools.

The influence of simple electrolyte or anionic trashes on cationic starch adsorption was examined using deinked pulp and bleached thermomechniical pulp. Adsorbed amounts of cationic starches increased slightly , then decreased abruptly as the concentration of simple electrolyte increased. This phenomenon was discussed based on the compression of electrical double layer and conformation change of starch molecules. Also, the effect of the type of simple electrolytes on starch adsorption was examined and discussed. Addition of sodium slilicate increased starch adsorption since it increased surface charge density of fibers. On the other hand, addition of kraft lignin decreased cationic demand of the pulp slurries and adsorbed amounts of cationic starches. Nonionic surfactant did not show any significant effect on the cationic demand of pulp slurries. When simple electrolytes were added to the stock , grater adsorption or cationic starches was obtained with starches of lower degree of substitution . On t도 other hand, amount of adsorbed starches decreased for lower DS starches when the concentration of anionic trashes increased.

High shear viscosity at several solids levels was measured for a number of pigment slurries and coating colors containing either anionic or amphoteric latex and analyzed according to Mooney and Eiler equations. Maximum packing fraction and intrinsic viscosity were obtained and compared. Eiler equation provides more credible information than Mooney equation on particle packing and intrinsic viscosity. The packing fraction obtained from Eiler equation was slightly greater than that obtained from static FCC measurement indicating the influence of pigment movement under the dynamic condition. Amphoteric latex caused 4-5% increase of maximum packing fraction of a coating color when its pH is lowered from 7 to 6, while anionic latex did not show any significant change in packing characteristics.

Effect of furnish on enzyme activity was investigated by using the three components (cellulose, enzyme, and cationic polyelectrolyte) model papermaking system. Avicel was used as a cellulose model compound to observe the effect of adsorption and desorption of enzyme with other component and the resultant change of particle size. As an experimental result, the enzyme loses considerably its apparent activity due to the adsorption onto cellulose and cationic polyelectrolyte. Activities of enzyme applied to the actual papermaking stocks having controlled fiber length showed different behavior in terms of pulp species UKP and KOCC stocks. That is, the enzyme activity in UKP was increased as fines content increased, however, vice versa in KOCC stock . This result can be considered to be the existence of various contaminants included in the fines of KOCC . The effect of possible contaminants such as inorganic materials, calcium ion, surfactant, and conductivity on enzyme activity were also investigated.
