  • The stationary Markov chain model has been widely used as a daily rainfall simulation model. A main assumption of the stationary Markov model is that statistical characteristics do not change over time and do not have any trends. In other words, the stationary Markov chain model for daily rainfall simulation essentially can not incorporate any changes in mean or variance into the model. Here we develop a Non-stationary hidden Markov chain model (NHMM) based stochastic downscaling scheme for simulating the daily rainfall sequences, using general circulation models (GCMs) as inputs. It has been acknowledged that GCMs perform well with respect to annual and seasonal variation at large spatial scale and they stand as one of the primary sources for obtaining forecasts. The proposed model is applied to daily rainfall series at three stations in Nakdong watershed. The model showed a better performance in reproducing most of the statistics associated with daily and seasonal rainfall. In particular, the proposed model provided a significant improvement in reproducing the extremes. It was confirmed that the proposed model could be used as a downscaling model for the purpose of generating plausible daily rainfall scenarios if elaborate GCM forecasts can used as a predictor. Also, the proposed NHMM model can be applied to climate change studies if GCM based climate change scenarios are used as inputs.

  • Lately, intensity and frequency of natural disasters such as flood are increasing because of abnormal climate. Casualties and property damages due to large-scale floods such as Typhoon Rusa in 2002 and Typhoon Maemi in 2003 rapidly increased, and these show the limits of the existing disaster prevention measures and flood forecasting systems regarding irregular climate changes. In order to efficiently respond to extraordinary flood, it is important to provide effective countermeasures through an inundation model that can accurately simulate flood inundation patterns. However, the existing flood inundation analysis model has problems such as excessive take of analysis time and accuracy of the analyzed results. Therefore, this study conducted a flood inundation analysis by using the Gerris flow solver that uses quadtree grid, targeting the Baeksan Levee in the Nakdong River Basin that collapsed because of a concentrated torrential rainfall in August, 2002. Through comparisons with the FLUMEN model that uses unstructured grid among the existing flood inundation models and the actual flooded areas, it determined the applicability and efficiency of the quadtree grid-based flood inundation model of the Gerris flow solver.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate implications for future STEAM education by analyzing the surveys by the in-service teachers who participated in the Advanced STEAM Teacher Training Program(ASTTP) for raising interests and understanding of science and technology and nurturing STEAM literacy and problem-solving ability of students. ASTTP was developed for promoting 'teacher competence for STEAM.' ASTTP is a 60-hour program(4 credits), which includes offline intensive course of 38 hours, online training course of 12 hours, a course of implementation at schools for 5 hours, and a workshop for 5 hours (based on the 2014 program). For the offline intensive course, teachers take various professional development classes and activities, such as open-laboratory tours, advanced experiments, mentoring programs, and team projects as well as lectures on diverse disciplines. For the online course, teachers take online classes freely while they are encouraged to work with other teachers in groups. After taking both online and offline courses, the teachers are required to implement their STEAM lesson plans in their classrooms. Finally at the workshop, some selected teachers share how successfully they have implemented STEAM education. About 700 teachers have successfully taken the program from 2012 to 2014. Based on the surveys by the teachers, the program has been modified and improved. Our analysis shows increased professional development in STEAM education for the participating teachers. This study can provide some implication and helpful insights for people who need to develop and manage teacher training programs for STEAM education and other education programs in general.

  • The purposes of this study were to develop an instrument to measure high school students' systems thinking and to validate the scale. The scale of systems thinking was made up for 5 factors - systems thinking, mental model, shared vision, personal mastery, and team learning through analyses of related literature. Six items per factor were constructed and the scale consisted of a total of 30 items for the pretest. After exploratory factor analysis, the number of total items was reduced to 20 items. For the main test, 280 students were sampled from high school and analyzed valid cases were 260 students. The finding of the exploratory factor analysis indicated 5 factors in the model, and 4 items per single factor. The result of confirmatory factor analysis was generally appropriate and acceptable (5 factor model: $x^2/df$=1.275, TLI=.946, CFI=.959, RMSEA=.033). The reliability for 20 items turned out to be reliable because the Cronbach's alphas were .840 and .604~.723 per each factor. This study should be expanded to various school levels and should be standardized for further research. The subsequent studies regarding diverse learning program development and implementation and the verification on the students' impact within the developed program can be recommended.

  • Forty-two percent of the patients with renal failure that requires continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) have been reported to have severe malnutrition, and preexisting malnutrition is a statistically significant and independent predictor of negative hospital outcomes. We performed this study to evaluate the appropriateness of the calorie and protein provided for the critically ill patients who require CRRT. One hundred forty-nine patients who received CRRT were enrolled. The demographic data, the length of the ICU stay and the mortality were recorded. The calorie/protein intake and the blood urea nitrogen (BUN), albumin and creatinine levels were used as nutritional parameters. The mean daily calorie intake during CRRT was 16.1${\pm}$7.4 kcal/kg, which was 64% of the recommended intake. Only 10% of the patients received the recommended caloric intake and the ratio of the enteral and parenteral calories was 26%/74%. The mean protein intake was 0.58${\pm}$0.34 g/kg, which was 38% of the recommended intake. The calorie and protein intakes at the termination of CRRT were significantly increased compared to the initial day of treatment, but they stayed under the recommended intake. The BUN, creatinine and albumin levels were significantly increased in the survival group (odds ratio for albumin: 2.73; creatinine: 2.43). A strategy to increase the nutrition provision is needed to improve the nutritional statuses and clinical outcomes of the critically ill patients who require CRRT.

  • This study suggests the use of a simple method, called the unit concentration response function(UCRF) for predicting travel time and dispersion of pollutants with the minimum information of study area instead of numerical models which are widely used In the Previous studies. However, the numerical models require time-consuming, tedious effort, and many data sets. So we derive the UCRF using some components such as travel time, peak concentration, and passage time of pollutant etc. We use the regression equation for the estimations of components which were developed from the investigations of many river basins in USA. This study used the regression equaiton for the UCRF to the accident of Dichloromethane leak into the Nakdong River occurred on June 30, 1994 and applied the UCRF for the predictions of travel time and dispersion. The predictions were compared with the results by QUAL2E model. The results by the regression equaiton and QUAL2E model had a good agreement between observed and simulated concentrations. Therefore, the regression equation for the UCRF which can simply estimate travel time and concentration of pollutants showed its applicability for the ungaged basin.

  • In order to quantitatively identify historical drought conditions and to evaluate their variability, drought indices commonly used. The calculation method for the drought index based on the principal hydrological factors, such as precipitation and reservoir storage, can estimate the duration and intensity of a drought. In this study the Palmer-type formula for drought index is derived for the Nakdong River basin by analyzing the monthly rainfall and meteorological data at 21 stations. The Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI) is used for dry land sectors to evaluate the meteorological anomaly in terms of an index which permits time and space comparisons of drought severity. The Surface Water Supply Index(SWSI) is devised for the use in conjunction with the Palmer index to provide an objective indicator of water supply conditions in Nakdong River basin. The SWSI was designed to quantify surface water supply capability of a watershed which depends on river and reservoir water The Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI) is evaluated for various time periods of 1 to 12 months in Nakdong River basin. For the purpose of comparison between drought indices correlation coefficient was calculated between indices and appropriate SPI time period was selected as 10 months for Nakdong River basin. A comparative study is made to evaluate the relative severity of the significant droughts occurred in Nakdong River basin since 1976. It turned out that $'94{\sim}'97$ drought was the worst drought in it's severity. It is found that drought indices are very useful tools in quantitatively evaluating the severity of a drought over a river basin.

  • This paper presents the effect of spatially-distributed rainfall on both rainfall-sediment-runoff and erosion or deposition in the experimental Cheoncheon catchment: upstream of Yongdam dam basin. The rainfall fields were generated by three rainfall interpolation techniques (Thiessen polygon: TP, Inverse Distance Weighting: IDW, Kriging) based only on ground gauges and two radar rainfall synthetic techniques (Gauge-Radar ratio: GR, Conditional Merging: CM). Each rainfall field was then assessed in terms of spatial feature and quantity and also used for rainfall-sediment-runoff and erosion-deposition simulation due to the spatial difference of rainfall fields. The results showed that all the interpolation methods based on ground gauges provided very similar hydrologic responses in spite of different spatial pattern of erosion and deposition while raw radar and GR rainfall fields led to underestimated and overestimated simulation results, respectively. The CM technique was acceptable to improve the accuracy of raw radar rainfall for hydrologic simulation even though it is more time consuming to generate spatially-distributed rainfall.

  • This paper is to analyze how firms in a large firm-led industrial city have carried out the restructuring in the face of radical shifts, with focus on the strategy and the restructuring of firms in Ulsan, a typical industrial district in Korea that is specialized in heavy & chemical industry. It has been well known that the local economy has been led by a small number of large firms, including affiliates of chaebol, and its industrial structure has also been characterised as a clear dichotomy between large firms as a customer and small and medium-size firms as a supplier, which can be called not horizontal but vertical relations. It can identify some tendencies, however, that local companies have been rather dynamically changing in response to increasingly turbulent environment since the Asian crisis. Some are radical, but some incremental. These can be summarized in four distinctive but interlinked ways. First, more than half of local companies surveyed have attempted to change their production systems, mainly from the fordist mass production towards the flexible mass production, seeking both economies of scale and scope. Second, local firms have vigorously continued to reorganize the boundary of the production and the organization, by specializing products and focusing on the core competence in order to save costs and cope with radically changing customer demands in a flexible way. Third, there have been various strategies for the organizational innovation such as the introduction of team organization, the boundary blurring between the managerial and production workers and the intra-firm spin-offs, so as to improve managerial efficiency and competence in the use of internal labour market. Finally, they have tried to be more sensitive to the market and customers. These tendencies seem to be increasingly critical to sustain their competitiveness. To do so, they tend to focus increasingly not only on the competing via the product quality rather than through price, but also to seek to diversify the market and customer firms beyond national boundary.

  • Grain-size trend analysis is the methodology to obtain the net sediment transport pattern from the spatial trends of grain size parameters. It has the potentials to be an effective tool to address the morphological changes of the deltaic barrier islands in the Nakdoog River once we make sure net transport patterns inferred from grain size trend analysis represent the morphological evolution patterns. This research aims to investigate the applicability of the net transport patterns obtained by 'transport vector', proposed by Gao and Collins(1992), to understanding the morphological changes of the Nakdong River deltaic barrier islands. The results indicate that the net transport directions are overall in concordance with the morphological evolution patterns; however, the level of concordance is low in the island with fast growing rate. The reasons may be match or mismatch of temporal scales involved between processes represented by net transport patterns and morphological change analyzed or the rate of morphological change. Consequently, the application of grain size trend analysis in analyzing the morphological changes of deltaic barrier islands requires the careful consideration of temporal scales involved.
