Bridge redundancy is defined as the capability of a bridge to sustain loads after one of its main members incurs damage. It is affected by many parameters, including the number of girders, span length, girder height, internal supports, and secondary members. The present AASHTO and Korean Bridge design codes, however, define bridge redundancy only as the number of girders, and neither the evaluation method nor the required level of redundancy is given. This study presented a redundancy evaluation method for plate girder bridges with severe fatigue damage based on the reliability method,by considering the essential parameters. A required level of redundancy was also proposed as a target system reliability index from the load capacity analysis and reliability analysis of the basis bridge designed by LRFD. Finally, the level of redundancy of simple and continuous plate girder bridges with a variable number of girders designed by ASD was evaluated and presented.

In this study hydraulic experiment was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics in the submerged outlet structure of Boryeong power plant and the efficiency of bubble reduction by installing horizontal porous plate in the outlet structure. The cross-sectional mean velocity in the submerged outlet structure was smaller than 1 m/s, the target value at the design stage to prevent bubble outflow to the open sea area. In addition, it was found that the maximum depth of bubble penetration is reduced 30 to 50% by installing the horizontal porous plate at the second falling location in the submerged outlet structure. It is expected that the total bubble amount entrained in the water will be most efficiently reduced by installing square-hole-shape porous plate of 20 cm hole size and making its central section as non-porous structure to dissipate the energy of falling water.
This study is to evaluate absorbed dose from right lung for brachytherapy and to estimate the effects of tissue heterogeneities on dose distribution for Iridium-192 source using Monte Carlo simulation. The study employed Geant4 code as Monte Carlo simulation to calculate the dosimetry parameters. The dose distribution of Iridium-192 source in solid water equivalent phantom including aluminium plate or steel plate inserted was calculated and compared with the measured dose by the ion chamber at various distances. And the simulation was used to evaluate the dose of gamma radiation absorbed in the lung organ and other organs around it. The dose distribution embedded in right lung was calculated due to the presence of heart, thymus, spine, stomach as well as left lung. The geometry of the human body was made up of adult male MIRD type of the computational human phantom. The dosimetric characteristics obtained for aluminium plate inserted were in good agreement with experimental results within 4%. The simulation results of steel plate inserted agreed well with a maximum difference 2.75%. Target organ considered to receive a dose of 100%, the surrounding organs were left the left lung of 3.93%, heart of 10.04%, thymus of 11.19%, spine of 12.64% and stomach of 0.95%. When the statistical error is performed for the computational human phantom, the statistical error of value is under 1%.

The heat transfer characteristics of free surface water jet impinging normally against a flat uniform heat flux surface were investigated. This deals with the effect of three nozzle configurations (Cone type, Reverse cone type, Vertical circular type) on the local and the average heat transfer. Heat transfer measurements were made for water jet issuing from a nozzle of which exit diameter 8 mm. The experimental conditions investigated are Reynolds number range of 27000 ~ 70000( $V_{O}$=3 ~ 8 m/s), nozzle-to-target plate distances H/D=2 ~ 10, and radial distance from the stagnation point r/D ~ = 0 ~ 7.42. For all jet velocities of H/D=2, the local Nusselt number decreased monotonically with increasing radial distance. However, for H/D from 4 to 10, and for the jet velocity $V_{O}$.geq.7 m/s for Cone type nozzle and $V_{O}$.geq.6 m/s for the other type nozzles, the Nusselt number distributions exhibited secondary peaks at r/D=3 ~ 3.5. For Reverse cone type nozzle and Vertical circular nozzle, the maximum stagnation point heat transfer and the maximum average heat transfer occurs at H/D=8. But for the Cone type nozzle, the maximum stagnation and average heat transfer occurs at H/D=10, 4, respectively. From the optimum nozzle-to-target plate distance, the stagnation and the average heat transfer reveal the following ranking: Reverse cone type nozzle, Vertical circular type nozzle, Cone type nozzle.ozzle.

In this study, we investigate the dispersion behavior of debris and debris cloud generated by high-velocity impacts using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique. The projectile and target plate were made of aluminum, and we confirm the validity of the SPH technique by comparing the measured major and minor axis lengths of the debris cloud in the reference with the predicted values obtained through the SPH analysis. We perform high-velocity impact and fracture analysis based on the verified SPH technique within the velocity ranges of 1.5~4 km/s, and we evaluate the dispersion behavior of debris induced by the impact in terms of its kinetic energy. The maximum dispersion radius of the debris on the witness plates located behind the target plate was increased with increasing impact velocity. We derive an empirical equation that is capable of predicting the dispersion radius, and we found that 95% of the total kinetic energy of the debris was concentrated within 50% of the maximum dispersion radius.

The purpose of this development is to prevent accidents in the telephone poles caused by bird nests in advance. It is a sensor node installed on a telephone pole to recognize a bird's nest. This is to remove the bird before it builds a nest and lays eggs. It is in the system that recognizes the bird nest by the change of the distance when the sensor is first installed and the distance value measured thereafter. In this paper, we have designed and tested infrared rays with concrete, iron plate, wood, and plastic bag are targeted. This is an object that can be detected within a telephone pole was tested. The value of the spectrum detected by the spectral reflectance was obtained through a photodiode. Through the standard deviation graph of these values, it became possible to predict the target of the object and measure the distance. As a result of this experiment, target information (concrete, iron plate, wood, plastic bag) about dangerous substances in the telephone pole was acquired through the infrared sensor. Through this, it is expected that it will contribute to the establishment of a safe power grid and a coexistence environment with nature through power grid monitoring.
This paper proposes a virtual target overlay technique for a realistic training simulation which projects a virtual target on ground-based CCD images according to an appointed scenario. This method creates a realistic 3D model for instructors by using high resolution GeoTIFF (Geographic Tag Image File Format) satellite images and DTED(Digital Terrain Elevation Data), and it extracts road areas from the given CCD images for both instructors and trainees, Since there is much difference in observation position, resolution, and scale between satellite Images and ground-based sensor images, feature-based matching faces difficulty, Hence, we propose a moving synchronization technique that projects the targets on sensor images according to the moving paths marked on 3D satellite images. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with satellite and sensor images of Daejoen.

Fiber-reinforced plastics(FRPs) have excellent specific stiffness and strength, so they are usually used as automotive parts that require high rigidity and lightweight instead of metal. However, it is difficult to predict the mechanical properties of injection molded parts due to the fiber orientation and breakage of FRPs. In this paper, the fiber orientation characteristics and mechanical properties of injection molded specimens were evaluated in order to fabricate automotive transmission side covers with FRPs and design a rib structure for improvement of their rigidity. The test molds were designed and manufactured to confirm the fiber orientation characteristics of each position of the injection molded standard plate-shaped specimens, and the tensile properties of the specimens were evaluated according to the injection molding conditions and directions of specimens. A gusset-rib structure was designed to improve the additional structural rigidity of the target products, and a proper rib structure was selected through the flexural tests of the rib-structured specimens. Based on the evaluation of fiber orientation and mechanical characteristics, the optimization analyses of gate location were performed to minimize the warpage of target products. Also, the deformation analyses against the internal pressure of target product were performed to confirm the rigidity improvement by gusset-rib structure. As a result, it could be confirmed that the deformation was reduced by 27~37% compared to the previous model, when the gusset-rib structure was applied to the joining part of the target products.

The coated metallic bipolar plates are getting attractive due to their good feasibility of mass production, low contact resistance, high electrical/thermal conductivity, low gas permeability and good mechanical strength comparing with graphite materials. Yet, metallic bipolar plates for polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM) fuel cells typically require coatings for corrosion protection. Other requirements for the corrosion protective coatings include low electrical contact resistance between metallic bipolar plate and gas diffusion layer, good mechanical robustness, low mechanical and fabrication cost. The authors have evaluated a number of protective coatings deposited on stainless steel substrate by electroplating. The coated metallic bipolar plates are investigated with an electrochemical polarization tests, salt dipping tests, adhesion tests for corrosion resistance and then the contact resistance was measured. The results showed that the selective samples electroplated with optimized method, satisfied the DOE target for corrosion resistance and contact resistance, and also were very stabilized in the typical fuel cell environments in the long-term.
Two perforated plates are used to investigate local heat/mass transfer characteristics in an impingement/effusion cooling system. A naphthalene sublimation method is conducted to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. The two plates are placed in parallel position with gap distances of 1, 2, 4 and 6 times of effusion hole diameter. The effects of hole arrangements of the plates are studied for staggered, square, and hexagonal arrays. The experiments are conducted at Reynolds number of 10,000 based on the effusion hole diameter. The results show that the smaller hole size in the staggered array has the higher transfer coefficients on the stagnation region due to the formation of higher momentum flows through the impingement holes. In the square array, heat/mass transfer on the target plate is more uniform as the number of impingement holes increases. High and uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained in the hexagonal array.
