  • When a new facility such as automobile assembly line is designed, computer simulation is often used to estimate its actual throughput level. If it falls short of the target throughput level, then the design must be modified to increase the throughput capacity. For complex facilities having parallel processes and network of material flows, the modification procedure is not trivial. Even if the capacity of a particular bottleneck process is increased, the target throughput may not be achieved because the bottleneck may move to another process. Furthermore, each process has a different set of options with different cost to increase the capacity. In this study, we present a systematic procedure of determining the cost-effective set of options which achieves the target throughput.

  • In this paper, the target FER is derived to achieve the maximum throughput in H-ARQ scheme where the FEC and ARQ are properly combined and proved through the simulation. In numerical analysis, The average upper bound on the FER(Frame Error Rate) of turbo code is derived and the throughput is expressed in terms of this bound. Then, the throughput is differentiated with respect to the FER and the optimal target PER is achieved. As a result of analysisw, the throughput is maximized at the target FER of 6% whereas the target PER is set to 5% in the current 3GPP2 specification.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the limit of previously used six sigma quality process evaluation metrics, $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$, and a solution to overcome this drawback by using a metric based on performance evaluation of Z-factor quality innovation. Case analysis on projects from national six sigma contest from 2011 to 2012 is performed and literature review on new drug development HTS (High Throughput Screening) is used to propose innovative performance evaluation metrics. This research shows that experimental study on six sigma evaluation metric, $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$, have no significance difference between industrial type (Manufacturing, Semi-Public Institute, Public Institute) and CTQ type (Product Technology Type CTQ, Process Technology Type CTQ). Following discovery characterize this quality improvement as fixed target type project. As newly developed moving target type of quality innovation performance metric Z-Factor is used for evaluating experimental study, hypothetical analysis suggests that $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$ share different relationship or even show reciprocal relationship. Constraints of the study are relatively small sample size of only 37 projects from past 2 years and conflict on having interview and communication with six sigma quality practitioner for qualitative experimental study. Both moving target type six sigma innovation project and fixed target type improvement project or quality circle enables efficient ways for a better understanding and quality practitioner use by applying quality innovation performance metric. Downside of fixed target type quality performance evaluation metric, $Z_{st}$ and $P_{pk}$, is presented through experimental study. In contrast, advantage of this study is that high throughput requiring product technology, process technology and quantum leap typed innovation effect is evaluated based on precision and accuracy and Z-Factor that enables relative comparison between enterprises is proposed and implemented.

  • Recentadvancesin '-omics ' technologies enable us to discover more diverse disease- relevant target proteins, which encourages us to find out more target-specific novel lead compounds as new drug candidates. Therefore, high-throughput screening (HTS) becomes an essential tool in this area. Among many HTS tools, in silico HTS is a very fast and cost-effective tool to try to derive a new lead compound for any new targets, especially when the target protein structures are known or readily modeled. • A high-throughput sorting (HTS) system has been designed to separate target particles using a negative dielectrophoretic (n-DEP) force. The system consists of a meso-sized channel and a cantilever-type electrode(CE) array designed to separate a large number of target particles by discerning subtle difference of weight and dielectric material property of the particles. Using the polystyrene beads with various sizes of 10, 25 and $50{\mu}m$, the developed system exhibits high-throughput sorting of about 200 beads/sec and more than 80 % of separation efficiency.

  • A general method has been developed for the solid phase synthesis of drug-like 7-aryl-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin-3(4H)- one derivatives 6. The method relies on a novel, microwave irradiation promoted cyclization reaction of the BOMBA resin bound, N-substituted-$\alpha$-(2-chloro-4-bromophenoxy)acetamide 3 that takes place via a Smiles rearrangement. The 7-bromobenzo[1,4]oxazine 4, produced in this process is converted to 7-aryloxazin analogs 5 by utilizing Suzuki coupling with various substituted arylboronic acids. Finally, the target 7-aryl-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin-3(4H)-ones 6 are liberated from the resin by treatment with 5% TFA. The progress of the reactions involved in this preparative route can be monitored by using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy on a single bead. The target compounds, obtained by using this five-step sequence, are produced in high yields and purities.

  • The non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique offers throughput improvement to meet the demands of the future generation of wireless communication networks. The objective of this work is to further improve the throughput by including an underlay cognitive radio network with an existing multi-carrier NOMA network, using cooperative communication. The throughput is maximized by optimal resource allocation, namely, power allocation, subcarrier assignment, relay selection, user pairing, and subcarrier pairing. Optimal power allocation to the primary and secondary users is accomplished in a way that target rate constraints of the primary users are not affected. The throughput maximization is a combinatorial optimization problem, and the computational complexity increases as the number of users and/or subcarriers in the network increases. To this end, to reduce the computational complexity, a dynamic network resource allocation algorithm is proposed for combinatorial optimization. The simulation results show that the proposed network improves the throughput.

  • In this paper, we investigate the throughput improvement of an adaptive M-ary quadrature modulation (AMQAM) scheme by using new switching thresh-olds over slow frequency nonselective Nakagami-m fading channels. The new switching thresholds are obtained by using the approximated BER expressions with complimentary error functions for each modulation scheme given in AWGN channels. By using the new switching thresholds, we can improve the maximum system throughput. For example, we get the maximum throughput improvement about 0.32 when tile target BER is 10$\^$-3/ and the fading figure m = 3.

  • We present a new next-generation sequencing-based method to identify somatic mutations of lung cancer. It is a comprehensive mutation profiling protocol to detect somatic mutations in 30 genes found frequently in lung adenocarcinoma. The total length of the target regions is 107 kb, and a capture assay was designed to cover 99% of it. This method exhibited about 97% mean coverage at $30{\times}$ sequencing depth and 42% average specificity when sequencing of more than 3.25 Gb was carried out for the normal sample. We discovered 513 variations from targeted exome sequencing of lung cancer cells, which is 3.9-fold higher than in the normal sample. The variations in cancer cells included previously reported somatic mutations in the COSMIC database, such as variations in TP53, KRAS, and STK11 of sample H-23 and in EGFR of sample H-1650, especially with more than $1,000{\times}$ coverage. Among the somatic mutations, up to 91% of single nucleotide polymorphisms from the two cancer samples were validated by DNA microarray-based genotyping. Our results demonstrated the feasibility of high-throughput mutation profiling with lung adenocarcinoma samples, and the profiling method can be used as a robust and effective protocol for somatic variant screening.

  • Various types of cooperative relaying (CR) schemes exhibit different levels of throughput and outage performance because of their inherent trade-off between diversity gain and opportunity cost; in other words, the overhead that is associated with cooperation. This article attempts to answer whether cooperative communication is beneficial or not from the system-level viewpoint and furthermore, if it is, how its average throughput can be maximized while maintaining the target outage rate. In order to improve throughput at the required outage performance, we propose a unified selection criterion to deal with different levels of combining gain and opportunity cost associated with each scheme, which allows for the employment of different CR schemes for various positions of the mobile station. Our system-level simulation results for an IEEE 802.16j multi-hop relay confirm the varying levels of trade-offs among different CR schemes and furthermore, show that CR will be a useful means of maximizing the average throughput for a multi-hop relay system as long as each type of the cooperating scheme is carefully selected, depending on the position of the mobile stations.
