  • Motion synchronization between developed real and virtual robots for object recognition and target tracking is introduced. ASUS's XTION PRO Live is implemented as a sensor and configured to recognize walls and obstacles, and perceive objects. In order to create virtual reality, Unity 3D is adopted to be associated with the real robot, and the virtual object is controlled by using an input device. A Bluetooth serial communication module is used for wireless communication between the PC and the real robot. The motion information of a virtual object controlled by the user is sent to the robot. Then, the robot moves in the same way as the virtual object according to the motion information. Through motion synchronization, two scenarios, which map the real space and current object information with virtual objects and space, were demonstrated, yielding good agreement between the two spaces.

  • This paper proposes a robust localization algorithm and optimal number of receivers considering the detection range of underwater targets. The accuracies of the source position, receiver position and sound velocity are improved using the known positions of underwater objects. The accuracies of these parameters influences the performance of the target localization error. Although the source and receiver positions are obtained by the global positioning system (GPS), there are still positional errors due to GPS and variations in sea temperature. First, the influence of those errors are analyzed mathematically and an algorithm is improved to improve the accuracies of source position, receiver position and sound velocity by using geographic points. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in comparison with the conventional algorithm by computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear 3D image correlator using a fast computational integral imaging reconstruction (CIIR) method. In order to implement the fast CIIR method, the magnification process was eliminated. In the proposed correlator, elemental images of the reference and target objects are picked up by lenslet arrays. Using these elemental images, reference and target plane images are reconstructed on the output plane by means of the proposed fast CIIR method. Then, through nonlinear cross-correlations between the reconstructed reference and the target plane images, the pattern recognition can be performed from the correlation outputs. Nonlinear correlation operation can improve the recognition of 3D objects. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments are carried out and the results are presented by comparing the conventional method.

  • The concept of detection and classification of objects based on infrared camera is widely applied to military applications. While the object detection technology using infrared images has long been researched and the latest one can detect the object in sub-pixel, the object classification technology still needs more research. In this paper, we present object classification method based on measured radiant intensity of objects such as target, artillery, and missile using infrared camera. The suggested classification method was verified by radiant intensity measuring experiment using black body. Also, possible measuring errors were compensated by modelling-based correction for accurate radiant intensity measure. After measuring radiation of object, the model of radiant intensity is standardized based on theoretical background. Based on this research, the standardized model can be applied to the object classification by comparing with the actual measured radiant intensity of target, artillery, and missile.

  • In this paper, we propose a robot-centered direction relation representation and the relevant reasoning methods for indoor service robots. Many conventional works on qualitative spatial reasoning, when deciding the relative direction relation of the target object, are based on the use of position information only. These reasoning methods may infer an incorrect direction relation of the target object relative to the robot, since they do not take into consideration the heading direction of the robot itself as the base object. In this paper, we present a robot-centered direction relation representation and the reasoning methods. When deciding the relative directional relationship of target objects based on the robot in an indoor environment, the proposed methods make use of the orientation information as well as the position information of the robot. The robot-centered reasoning methods are implemented by extending the existing cone-based, matrix-based, and hybrid methods which utilized only the position information of two objects. In various experiments with both the physical Turtlebot and the simulated one, the proposed representation and reasoning methods displayed their high performance and applicability.

  • Even though the popularity of projection mapping continues to increase and it is being implemented in more and more settings, most current projection mapping systems are limited to special purposes, such as outdoor events, live theater and musical performances. This lack of versatility arises from the large number of projectors needed and their proper calibration. Furthermore, we cannot change the positions and poses of projectors, or their projection targets, after the projectors have been calibrated. To overcome these problems, we propose a projection mapping method using a projector robot that can perform projection mapping in more general or ubiquitous situations, such as shopping malls. We can estimate a projector's position and pose with the robot's self-localization sensors, but the accuracy of this approach remains inadequate for projection mapping. Consequently, the proposed method solves this problem by combining self-localization by robot sensors with position and pose estimation of projection targets based on a 3D model. We first obtain the projection target's 3D model and then use it to accurately estimate the target's position and pose and thus achieve accurate projection mapping with a projector robot. In addition, our proposed method performs accurate projection mapping even after a projection target has been moved, which often occur in shopping malls. In this paper, we employ Ubiquitous Display (UD), which we are researching as a projector robot, to experimentally evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a technological solution for improving the recognition direction of target objects for automatic vision inspection by machine vision. This enables the automatic machine vision inspection to detect the image of the inspection object regardless of the position and orientation of the object, eliminating the need for a separate inspection jig and improving the automation level of the inspection process. This study develops the technology and method that can be applied to the wire harness manufacturing process as the inspection object and present the result of real system. • A radar receives reflected signals from various objects to detect a target. Undesired object, called clutter, as well as the target generates reflected signals. The clutter radar cross section(RCS) is dependent on many factors, which are the antenna pattern, distance between the radar and the target, and the height of the target and the radar. Herein, surface clutter RCS for ground-based radar is analyzed, and the effect of the surface clutter RCS on the received signal is investigated.

  • Simulation of the target-scattered echo requires the understanding of scattering mechanism at the highlight points. In this paper, the basic assumption of Highlight Model is reviewed through the analyzed data obtained in the acoustic water tank experiment. The analysis shows that the scattering mechanism involves pulse elongation and frequency shift as elements of target-scattered echo, and that the internal structures affect the temporal response of the target-scattered echo significantly. The band-limited impulse response or Green's function due to the diffraction from highlight points of internal structures is not mere delta function, but acts like a filter, which causes frequency shift and is elongated in time.

  • Focusing on the issue that the conventional Kernel Correlation Filter (KCF) algorithm has poor performance in handling scale change and obscured objects, this paper proposes an anti-occlusion and scale adaptive tracking algorithm in the basis of KCF. The average Peak-to Correlation Energy and the peak value of correlation filtering response are used as the confidence indexes to determine whether the target is obscured. In the case of non-occlusion, we modify the searching scheme of the KCF. Instead of searching for a target with a fixed sample size, we search for the target area with multiple scales and then resize it into the sample size to compare with the learnt model. The scale factor with the maximum filter response is the best target scaling and is updated as the optimal scale for the following tracking. Once occlusion is detected, the model updating and scale updating are stopped. Experiments have been conducted on the OTB benchmark video sequences for compassion with other state-of-the-art tracking methods. The results demonstrate the proposed method can effectively improve the tracking success rate and the accuracy in the cases of scale change and occlusion, and meanwhile ensure a real-time performance.
