구진(灸津) 약침(藥鍼)이 Carrageenan으로 유도한 관절염에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effect of moxi-tar herbal acupuncture on the carrageenan-induced arthritis in rats)

  • Obiecnves : The purpose of this study was to examine the analgesic effect of moxi-tar on a rat model of carrageenan-induced arthritis and the relations between moxi-tar-induced analgesia and endogenous NO and iNOS, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and c-Fos protein expression in the spinal cord. Methods : Carrageenan-induced arthritis rat model was used to test the effect of moxi-tar as a chronic pain model. After the induction of arthritis, rats subsequently showed a reduced stepping force of the affected limb for at least the next 4 days. The reduced stepping force of the limb was presumably due to a painful knee, since oral injection of indomethacin produced temporary improvement of weight bearing. Moxi-tar dissolved in ethyl alcohol was injected several acupoints. After the treatment, behavioral tests measuring stepping force were periodically conducted during the next 12 hours. Results : Moxi-tar produced significant improvement of stepping force of the hindlimb affected by the arthritis lasting at least 9 hours. The magnitude of this improvement was equivalent to that obtained after an oral injection of 3 mg/kg of indomethacin and this improvement of stepping force was interpreted as an analgesic effect. Moxi-tar produced the improvement of stepping force of the affected hindlimb in a dose-dependent manner. Both NO production and iNOS, COX-2 protein expression increased by arthritis were suppressed by moxi-tar. moxi-tar on combination with electroacupuncture (EA) produced more powerful and longer lasting improvement of stepping force of the hindlimb affected by the arthritis than either moxi-tar or EA did. Conclusion : The present study suggest that moxi-tar produces a potent analgesic effect on the chronic knee arthritis pain model in the rat and that moxi-tar-induced analgesia modulate endogenous NO through the suppression of iNOS/COX-2 protein expression.

  • The purpose of this study is to ascertain strengths and hardening rate of epoxy-modified mortar with wood-tar contents. The polymer-modified mortars (PMMs) using epoxy resin with wood-tar are prepared with various polymer-binder ratios of 1, 3, 5% and wood-tar contents of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%. The PMMs using epoxy resin are tested for compressive, flexural and tensile strengths and hardening rate of epoxy resin. As a result, the strengths and hardening rate under polymer-binder ratio 1% and wood-tar content of 5% are more excellent than those of other specimens.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the preservation characteristics and weathering of larch wood treated with wood tar and wood vinegar, neglected under the circumstance of outdoor exposure, buried under ground, and deposited under water. Earlywood cell wall observed by optical microscope has been collapsed due to the fungi deterioration. This phenomenon occurred more frequently in the case of woods treated with wood tar and buried under ground. Relative crystallinity of woods treated with wood tar, exposed outdoors, and untreated wood buried under ground was highest at 63% while wood tar treated wood buried under ground was lowest at 46%.

초저타르 담배의 설계-요소별 분석 (One mg Tar Cigarettes-From the components point of view)

  • 타르함량 1mg 담배는 특히 극동지방을 포함한 세계 여러지역에서 시장이 증가하고 있는 대표적인 상품이다. 초저타르 담배의 설계는 쉽지 않은데, 저타르 담배의 설계에 사용된 기술을 단순히 연장하여 적용하게 되면 대체로 맛이 없는 담배가 된다. 여러나라에서 현재 시판되고 있는 초저타르 담배의 설계를 세밀히 분석한 결과 일반적으로 널리 적용되고 있는 특정한 설계방식은 볼 수 없었다. 엽배합, 엽배합밀도, 필터설계, 필터희석율 등은 상품마다 제각각일 정도로 변이가 크다. 이들 요인들은 담배의 puff수, puff별 타르함량, 그리고 궁극적으로는 담배맛에 영향을 끼칠 것이다. 본 논문에서는 전세계에서 시판되고 있는 17개의 초저타르 담배에 대한 세밀한 분석결과를 제시하고자 한다. 또한 잎담배 화학성분이 초저타르 담배의 설계에 특별이 미치는 영향, 판상엽의 사용, 연소특성과 타르이행량에 영향을 미치는 권련지의 특성과 필터희석율에 관련되는 요인의 선택 등에 관하여 고찰하고자 한다. 이와 같은 고찰을 통해 우리는 초저타르 담배의 상업적 성공이 이들 관련 기술의 절묘한 균형을 맞춤 으로서 - 물론 훌릉한 영업력도 빼놓을 수 없지만 - 가능하였던 것으로 결론 짓고자 한다.

Analysis of the MVM P38 Promoter Distal DNA cis-Elements Responsible for Transactivation by Nonstructural Proteins

  • The P38 promoter of minute virus of mice (MVM) is a very weak promoter which is strongly transactivated by viral nonstructural proteins. To analyze the upstream sequence of the P38 promoter which is responsible for the transactivation by nonstructural proteins in MVM, chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) reporter plasm ids containing a series of 5' deletion and internal deletion mutants of the P38 promoter were constructed. The wild type and mutant CAT constructs of P38 promoter were cotransfected into murine A92L fibroblast cells with a plasmid expressing viral nonstructural proteins by DEAE-dextran method. Each promoter activity was analyzed by CAT assay. As previously reported (Ahn et al., 1992), the proximal DNA cis-elements required for transactivation of the MVM P38 promoter are GC box and TATA box. However, the analysis of 5' deletion mutants showed that H-l tar like sequence (MVM TAR) which is located between -143 and -122 relative to the transcription initiation site is also required for transactivation of the P38 promoter by nonstructural proteins. Interestingly, even if the MVM TAR was removed by internal deletion, the level of the transactivation is still 70% of wild type level of transactivation. We also found that, in addition to the MVM TAR motif, there are two other motifs which are similar to the MVM TAR sequence. When these TAR like motifs were further deleted, the levels of transactivation were decreased further. Taken together, the MVM TAR sequence and TAR like motifs located upstream of P38 promoter are playing an important role for the transactivation of P38 promoter by nonstructural proteins in minute virus of mice.

의약품과 의약외품에 사용되는 타르순색소의 관리방안을 위한 조사연구 (Investigation for the Management Methods of Pure Tar Color Additives for Drugs and Quasi-drugs)

  • Background: This study was aimed to establish the systematic management methods of tar color additives used in Korea for drugs and quasi-drugs. Although tar color additives have been used in various areas, safety problems are continuously being reported by several studies. For that reason, major countries like US, Japan, Europe are trying to update the safety information of tar color additives and the related management methods, and Korea also need to complement them based on the updated information for their safer use. Method: This report includes the compared information of all legally used tar color additives of each country, such as color additive name, compound name and chemical abstracts service registry number. Conclusion: It is expected that these investigated results will be useful as the basic materials for proper management guidelines of tar color additives in Korea.

  • Gasification of biomass produces syngas containing CO, $H_2$ and/or $CH_4$, which can then be converted into energy or value-added fuels. One of key issues for efficient gasification is to minimize tar concentration in the syngas for use in a final conversion device such as gas engine. This study investigated the decomposition of primary tar by catalytic cracking using char as catalyst, of which the feature can be integrated into a fixed bed gasifier design. The pyrolysis vapor containing tar from pyrolysis of wood at $500^{\circ}C$ was passed through a reactor filled with or without char at $800^{\circ}C$ for a residence time of 1, 3 or 5 sec. Then, the condensable vapor (water and tar) and gases were analyzed for the yields and elemental composition. Four types of char particles with different microscopic surface area and pore size distribution: wood, paddy straw, palm kernel shell and activated carbon. The results were analyzed for the mass and carbon yields of tar and the composition of product gases to conclude the effects of char types and residence time.

  • This research was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of one- and dual-stage recycled-water systems in slurry bioreactor treatment for coal tar-contaminated soil. Silty loam soil was used for this research. Coal tar and 14 target PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) concentration in the soil were determined with gas chromatography. There was no significant difference between removal efficiencies of one- and dual-stage recycled water systems in case of about 4,000 mg coar tar/kg. However, the dual-stage system increased significantly the removal efficiency in case of about 20,000 mg coar tar/kg and the first-order kinetic constant of the system was over 1.5 times higher than that of one-stage recycled water system. 3-Ring compounds in PAHs was removed completely within 30 days of operation. Coar tar was removed in over 96% through biodegradation and removed in about 4% by evaporation. High correlation coefficient($r^2=0.91$) was found between water solubility and removal efficiency of the cyclic compounds.

  • This study was conducted to determine the sidestream smoke concentration, nicotine, tar, and CO, by the characteristics of tobacco leaves and their combinations. 20 kinds of tobacco leaves and 15 types of their combinations were selected for this study. After collecting the sidestream smoke by fishtail chimney, the concentrations of nicotine, tar, and CO in sidestream smoke were analyzed. Variation in nicotine concentration of sidestream smoke among tobacco leaves and their combinations was as much as 9-times. Heavy leaves and burley leaves were higher in nicotine concentration than light leaves and flue-cured leaves, respectively, the reconstituted tobacco leaf had the minimum concentration of nicotine. Tar concentration of sidestream smoke also was changed by the characteristics of tobacco leaves and their combinations. As the american C4F had the maximum concentration of tar in sidestream smoke, the reconstituted tobacco leaf showed the minimum concentration. Blending 50 % flue-cured B1-0 plus 50% burley B1-T grade showed the highest value in the nicotine concentration. Also, in case of adding B3K and izmir tobacco leaves, the nicotine concentration was decreased. The tar concentration in the sidestream smoke increased as increasing the amount of flue-cured heavy leaf. The CO concentration was not so much Changed by the characteristics of tobacco leaves and their combinations.

Light Tar Decomposition of Product Pyrolysis Gas from Sewage Sludge in a Gliding Arc Plasma Reformer

  • Pyrolysis/gasification technology utilizes an energy conversion technique from various waste resources, such as biomass, solid waste, sewage sludge, and etc. to generating a syngas (synthesis gas). However, one of the major problems for the pyrolysis gasification is the presence of tar in the product gas. The tar produced might cause damages and operating problems on the facility. In this study, a gliding arc plasma reformer was developed to solve the previously acknowledged issues. An experiment was conducted using surrogate benzene and naphthalene, which are generated during the pyrolysis and/or gasification, as the representative tar substance. To identify the characteristics of the influential parameters of tar decomposition, tests were performed on the steam feed amount (steam/carbon ratio), input discharge power (specific energy input, SEI), total feed gas amount and the input tar concentration. In benzene, the optimal operating conditions of the gliding arc plasma 2 in steam to carbon (S/C) ratio, 0.98 $kWh/m^3$ in SEI, 14 L/min in total gas feed rate and 3.6% in benzene concentration. In naphthalene, 2.5 in S/C ratio, 1 $kWh/m^3$ in SEI, 18.4 L/min in total gas feed rate and 1% in naphthalene concentration. The benzene decomposition efficiency was 95%, and the energy efficiency was 120 g/kWh. The naphthalene decomposition efficiency was 79%, and the energy yield was 68 g/kWh.
