A bearing is a mechanical component that transmits rotation and supports loads. According to the type of rotating mechanism, bearings are categorized into ball bearings and tapered roller bearings. Tapered roller bearings have higher load-bearing capabilities than ball bearings. They are used in applications where high loads need to be supported, such as wheel bearings for commercial vehicles and trucks, aircraft and high-speed trains, and heavy-duty spindles for heavy machinery. In recent times, the demand for reducing the driving friction torque in automobiles has been increasing owing to the CO2 emission regulations and fuel efficiency requirements. Accordingly, the research on the driving friction torque of bearings has become more essential. Researchers have conducted various studies on the lubrication, friction, and contact in tapered roller bearings. Although researchers have conducted numerous studies on the friction in the lips and on roller misalignment and skew, studies considering the influence of roller shape, specifically roller shape errors including lips, are few. This study investigates the driving friction torque of tapered roller bearings considering roller geometric uncertainties. Initially, the study calculates the driving friction torque of tapered roller bearings when subjected to axial loads and compares it with experimental results. Additionally, it performs Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the influence of roller geometric uncertainties (i.e., the effects of roller geometric deviations) on the driving friction torque of the bearings. It then analyzes the results of these simulations.
Tapered roller bearings are widely used in high axial-load and radial-load applications. In this study, a numerical analysis is performed to study a finite line contacts EHL problem between a tapered roller and raceway in tapered roller bearings. Converged solutions are obtained for moderate load and material parameters using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. The contours and sectional plots of pressure distribution and film shape are compared. The pressure distribution and film shapes near both ends of the roller are very different from those in the central part and are transversely asymmetric. The maximum pressure and absolute minimum film thickness always occur at the small end of the roller.
Tapered roller bearings are widely used in equipment where high combined thrust and radial loads are experienced. A certain amount of tilting between the tapered rollers and the races always occurs because of bending moment load conditions and shaft deflection. It is now well understood that a coherent elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film separates the rollers and races. In spite of extensive study on EHL problems for over half a century, relatively few studies have focused on the finite line contacts problem. This study presents a complete numerical analysis of the effects of roller tilting on the EHL characteristics in a tapered roller bearing. We systematically analyze this highly nonlinear problem using finite differences with fully non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. Detailed EHL pressure distributions and film shapes are presented under moderate loads and material parameters. A very small roller tilting significantly affects the pressure distributions and film shapes near both ends of the roller. Moreover, the effect of tilting on the EHL characteristics at the small end is much greater than that at the large end. Therefore, in designing optimum profiles for tapered roller bearings, the profile radius should be larger at the small end.
When a bearing roller is in contact with race ways. excessive pressure peaks occur at the ends of the contact region. They are called edge loading. In this study, a method to determinate crowning quantity of the tapered roller bearing which considers tilting. This method is based on contact analysis.

Tapered roller bearings are used widely in vans, trucks, and trains because they can support the vehicle in a stable manner even under a heavy load. The cage of a tapered roller bearing maintains the gap between the rollers, which prevents friction wear and suppresses heating. If the cage is severely deformed due to resonance, the roller may not be able to roll smoothly and even leave the cage. Consequently, it is very important to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the cage for reliable performance of a bearing. The cage essentially has geometrical tolerance in the manufacturing process. In this paper, the effects of those geometrical imperfections on the dynamic characteristics of the cage were investigated. As a result, natural frequency separation occurred near the natural frequency of the ideal cage due to geometrical imperfections. In addition, the interval was proportional to the magnitude of the geometric error, and the interval increased with increasing mode number.

Tapered roller bearings are core components of rotating machine parts and are simultaneously subjected to axial and radial loads. Life-shortening effect was particularly evident in the case of tapered roller bearings used in the input and output shafts of transmission; this shortening of life was a result of excessive axial pre-load, which is common in the transmission assembly line. In this study, we derived an equation for evaluating the life of tapered roller bearings subjected to excessive pre-load by using accelerated life test data. The DOE(Design Of Experiment) method and FEA(Finite Element Analysis) was used for determining the condition for performing an accelerated life test. This equation for evaluating the service life of the bearings was derived by analyzing the Weibull distribution of the test results. Using the derived equation the life evaluated was 6-7 times longer than that evaluated by the conventional $L_{10}$ bearing-life equation. The results of this study will be helpful in predicting the life of tapered roller bearings subjected to excessive pre-load and in designing reliable rotating machines.

Automotive fuel efficiency regulations and air pollution control are hot issues of recent years in the automotive industry. To solve these regulation problems, many studies are continuing to improve the transmission efficiency of transmissions. Tapered roller bearings are useful to improve the transmission efficiency in the recent automobile parts. The frictional losses in the tapered roller bearings are mainly composed of the rolling friction and the sliding friction, and are dependent upon the load, the lubrication, the rotation speed of bearings, and etc. In this paper, the operating conditions of the transmission are defined and then the power losses of each bearing are calculated. In addition, improvement options are suggested after identifying the design factors influenced much by the improvement effect of power loss under the operating conditions of each bearing. We compare the power losses of the entire transmission system due to bearing improvements by comparing the friction losses between the original design and the improved design. Lastly, it is shown that the calculated power losses are valid by comparing the test values and the theoretical values for the frictional torque characteristics of the original and improved bearings.
