The effects of steep and shallow hills on a stationary tornado-like vortex with a swirl ratio of 0.4 are simulated and quantified as Fractional Speed Up Ratios (FSUR) at three different locations of the vortex with respect to the crests of the hills. Steady state Reynolds Averaged Naiver Stokes (RANS) equations closed using Reynolds Stress Turbulence model are used to simulate stationary tornadoes. The tornado wind field obtained from the numerical simulations is first validated with previous experimental and numerical studies by comparing radial and tangential velocities, and ground static pressure. A modified fractional speed-up ratio (FSUR) evaluation technique, appropriate to the complexity of the tornadic flow, is then developed. The effects of the hill on the radial, tangential and vertical flow components are assessed. It is observed that the effect of the hill on the radial and vertical component of the flow is more pronounced, compared to the tangential component. Besides, the presence of the hill is also seen to relocate the center of tornadic flow. New FSUR values are produced for shallow and steep hills.

In this study, combustion fields of the end-burning hybrid combustor with tangential oxidizer injectors are examined. Momentum ratio of oxidizer is used as a main parameter to analyse the combustion efficiency with temperature, pressure, swirl velocity and mixture fraction field. It was found that as momentum ratio decreases the overall combustion efficiency is enhanced with the pressure field being insensitive to momentum ratio keeping quasi-uniform distribution. Irrespective to the momentum ratio, annular hot region commonly occurred in the upper combustion chamber where this phenomenon was left for a future improvement to be followed.

A Promising new approach to achieve low pollutant emissions and improvement of flame stability is tested experimentally using a cyclone jet hybrid combustor employing both premixed and diffusion combustion mode. Three kinds of nozzle are tested for mixing enhancement of fuel and air. The LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) is used as a fuel. The combustor is operated by two methods. One is DC (Diffusion Combustion) mode generated swirl flow by air as general swirl combustor, and the other is HC (Hybrid Combustion) mode. The HC mode consists of diffusion jet flame of axial direction and premixed cyclone flame of tangential direction in order to stabilized the diffusion jet flame. The results showed that the flame stability of HC mode is significantly enhanced than that of DC mode through the change of mixing characteristics by modifications of fuel nozzle. In addition, the reductions of CO and NOx emission in HC mode, as compared with that for the DC mode, is large than about 50% in stable region. Also, even using the low calorific fuel as $CO_2$-blended gas, it is identified that the cyclone jet hybrid combustor has the high performance of flame stability.
In order to improve atomization of droplet of sprayers, gun-type nozzle equipped with swirl screw which could increase tangential velocity had been used in this study. The results obtained were as follow: The larger diameter of atomized droplet was, the longer it reached. Tile atomizing phenomenon while using swirl screw in the nozzle was more efficient. There was little difference of travelling distance in the both nozzles when the small diameter of disk hole was used, but thetravlling distance of the nozzle with swirl screw was evidently getting shorter with the increase of the hole diameter compared to that of the nozzle without swirl sorew. The size of sprayed particles was getting smaller owing to the phenomenon of air movement the one to two meters travelling distance of droplet from maximum travelling point.
Development of a small gas-turbine combustor for 100kW class APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) has been performed. This combustor is a reverse-annular type and has a tangential swirler in the liner head to improve the fuel/air mixing and flame stability. Three main and three pilot fuel injectors of the simplex pressure-swirl type are used. The performance target at the design condition includes a turbine inlet temperature of 1170K, a combustion efficiency of 99%, a pattern factor of 30%, and an engine durability of 3000 hours. Under developing the combustor, we conducted performance test of our first prototype(TS1) with some variants. As a result of the test, the performance targets of the combustor are satisfied except that the pattern factor is about 4% higher than target value. So, we redesigned the second prototype(TS2) and conduct performance test with the critical focus on pattern factor and exit mean temperature. We adopted TS2 four variant to check the improvement of pattern factor. As the result, the pattern factors of several variants were satisfied with the performance target. Finally, We chose the TS2A variant as a final combustor for our APU model.
Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of a conical convergent nozzle. The present study describes a computational work to investigate the effects of annular slit on the spiral jet. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained obviously show that the annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as tangential and axial velocities.
An experiment was performed to obtain the local heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number in a circular duct with a 180$^{\circ}$ bend for Re=6 x 10$^4$, 8 x 10$^4$ and 1 x 10$\^$5/ under swirling flow and non-swirling flow conditions. The test tube with a circular section was made from stainless steel having a curvature ration of 9.4. Current heat flux of 5.11 kW/㎡ was applied to the test tube by electrical power and the swirling motion of air was produced by a tangential inlet to the pipe axis at 180$^{\circ}$. Measurements of local wall temperatures and the bulk mean temperatures of air were made at four circumferential positions at 16 stations. The wall temperatures showed a reduced distribution curve at the bend for the non-swirling flow, but this effect did not appear for the swirling flow. The Nusselt number distributions for the swirling flow, which was calculated from the measured wall and the bulk temperatures, were higher than that of the non-swirling flow. The average Nusselt number of the swirling flow increased by about 90-100%, compared to that of the non-swirling flow. The Nu/Nu$\_$DB/ values at the 90$^{\circ}$ station for non-swirling flow and swirling flow were approximately 2.5 and 4.8 at Re=6x10$^4$ respectively. The values agree well with Said's results for non-swirling flow.

The GCSC injectors studied in this paper are those applied to the combustion chamber of staged combustion engines. Liquid fuel is injected through tangential holes along the outer wall of the GCSC injector forming a swirling sheet and oxygen rich gas generated by a preburner enters axially through the center orifice of the injector to form a gaseous jet. The spray characteristics of GCSC injectors under ambient/high pressure conditions and the effect of recess on spray characteristics have been examined in this paper. These results are expected to be used as fundamental data to develop of a staged combustion engine.
High-frequency combustion instabilities may occur during the development of feasible engine combustors. These instabilities can result in irreparable damages to the wall of combustors or the degradation of engine performance. So, it is essential to identify injectors that have high stability characteristics during the early stages of development. The objective of present study was to assess the stability of coaxial injectors and an impinging injector with different recess lengths in order to develop stable injectors optimally. Stability margin was evaluated based on the distance from operating condition to the unstable regions. A simulating combustion test method was used to analyze the stability of injectors. A small-scale combustion chamber was designed to simulate the first tangential acoustic mode of the actual combustor. Gaseous oxygen and a mixture of methane and propane were used as simulant propellants to satisfy their flow similarity to the actual propellants of a combustor in a liquid rocket combustor. The results indicated that injectors having small recess lengths showed relatively large combustion stability margins. For the injectors of large recess lengths, instability regions with large and super-large amplitude oscillations were observed. Thus, injector with shorter recess lengths had a higher stability than that of longer one due to the different mixing processes.
