The aim of this study is to compare antioxidant activity and total polyphenol contents between before and after fermentation of Ssanghwa-tang according to solvent partition. Ssanghwa-tang was fermented with Lactobacilus fermentum. Ssanghwa-tang and the fermented Ssanghwa-tang were fractioned by solvent partition with ethyl acetate, butanol and water. The Ssanghwa-tangs and their solvent fractions were evaluated for total polyphenol contents and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The antioxidant activity as well as the total polyphenol contents were highest in each ethyl acetate fraction and significantly (p<0.05) increased after fermentation.

Oxygen consumption rate has been determined to study the effect of 'Gal Geun Tang' upon stress resistance of rats. The oxygen consumption rate of liver tissue increased slightly when normal rats were given the Gal Geun Tang infusion only. When rats were given the infusion after an injection of typhoid vaccine, the elevated boby temperature and oxygen consumption rate due to typhoid vaccine fell to normal level. From this result, it is concluded that 'Gal Geun Tang' has a function that may normalize abnormally strained liver metabolism. Oxygen consumption rate of the rats significantly increased when rats were exposed to cold condition. However, under the same condition it rather maintained the normal consumption rate when the rats were given previously "Gal Geun Tang". It is suggested that 'Gal Geun Tang' has an effects that impairs the immune response from cold stress. The rats that were given Cinnamomi Ramulus('Ge Ji Tang') showed less effect than the group of 'Gal Geun Tang'.

Indications of Galgeunhaegi-tang(葛根解肌湯) for Taeeum-type on "Donguisusebowon" are small. Therefore, indications of Galgeunhaegi-tang for Taeeum-type need to be extended for broader clinical use. There would be some methods to do that, and we could review "Dongeuibogam" that Four-Constitution Medicine formulas are based on. We reviewed Galgeunhaegi-tang, which is the origin of Galgeunhaegi-tang, and their modified formula(加減方) on "Dongeuibogam". As a result, we supposed 10 indications of non-classical formula(後世方) Galgeunhaegi-tang as possible indications of Galgeunhaegi-tang for Taeeum-type.

JaYumKeonBiTang(滋陰健脾湯) was recorded in 'Manbyungwhachu'(萬病回春); medical treatment book 1587 at first. It was composed by some common - used basic prescriptions: 'PalJinTang'(八珍湯). 'YiJinTang'(二陣湯), 'JeonGjiWhan'(定志丸), 'EuckGunJaTang'(六君子湯). 'SaengMacSan'(生脈散) etc. Therefore, JaYumKeonBiTang(滋陰健脾湯) is very useful as fallow oriental pathological condition: 'SimBiHeoGeob'(心脾虛怯). 'KiHeoDamSung'(氣虛痰盛), 'GiHeyIGooHeo'(氣血俱虛), 'SimHeo'(心虛) so JaYumKeonBiTang(滋陰健脾湯) is clinically applicated with dizziness, nausea. restlessness.

Objectives : "The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of Soshiho-tang(小柴胡湯)" on the patient suffered from nausea, retching, vomiting and postprandial fullness. Methods : We diagnosed the symptoms and the signs of the patient as Soshiho-tang syndrome(小柴胡湯證) according to "Treatise on Cold Damage Disease(傷寒論)". We prescribed Soshiho-tang with acupuncture and moxibustion for about 2 weeks. Results : The subjective assessments of the nausea and postprandial fullness had improved. And the frequencies of the retching and vomiting had decreased. Conclusions : We suggest that Soshiho-tang has effectiveness on nausea, retching, vomiting and postprandial fullness in patient diagnosed as Soshiho-tang symptom.

Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the protective mechanisms of Palmul-tang on hypoxia-induced cytotoxicity in H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells. Methods : In this study, we used H9c2 cells. Cells were subjected to hypoxia in the absence and presence of $1000\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ Palmul-tang for 24 hrs. Cells were treated with various concentrations of Palmul-tang for 24 hrs. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay. Hypoxia markedly decreased the viability of H9c2 cells, which was characterized with apparent apoptotic features such as chromatin condensation as well as fragmentation of genomic DNA and nuclei. Results : Palmul-tang significantly reduced hypoxia-induced cell death and apoptotic characteristics. Also, Palmul-tang prevented mitochondrial dysfunction including the disruption of mitochondrial membrane permeability transition (MPT) and an increase in expression of apoptogenic Bcl-2 proteins in hypoxia-H9c2 cells. Conclusions; This study suggests that the protective effects of Palmul-tang against hypoxic damages may be mediated by the modulation of Bcl-2, Bax expression.

The subject was a 70-year-old man who was suffering from productive cough after stroke. His symptoms were night cough, thick sputum production, reddened tongue and night sweat. The subject was diagnosed as having a deficiency of Yin, and was treated with Chungsangboha-tang(Qingshangbuxia-tang). A decrease in the severity of the subject's cough and sputum were observed, and $O_2$ saturation increased. In this case Chungsangboha-tang(Qingshangbuxia-tang) was effective on the patient with night cough, thick sputum production, reddened tongue and night sweat due to deficiency of Yin after stroke.

Objective : This case report aims to show the effect of Osuyu-tang on an atopic dermatitis. The patient was diagnosed with Yangmyung-byung based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, the patient was diagnosed with Yanamyung-byung and has been unusual dietary habits. So she took Osuyu-tang decoction for 2 weeks. We evaluated the results of treatment by SCORAD Index and before and after treatment photos. Results : After taking Osuyu-tang decoction for 2weeks, the patient's SCORAD INDEX and symptoms was decreased from 49.5(severe) to 3.5(mile). Also, the patient's chronic diagestive disorder improved. Conclusions : This case report showed an effectiveness of using Osuyu-tang according to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions on atopic dermatitis.

Objective : This study aims to explain the effect of Osuyu-tang on an acne vulgaris which a Soeumbyeong patient has. Methods : This is a case report on a female patient who has been suffering from acne vulgaris which is not controlled by normal dermatological treatments. According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, Osuyu-tang was provided for fifty days. Results : After a series of Osuyu-tang treatments, the patient's symptoms and result of KAGS improved. Conclusions : This case study showed an effectiveness of using Osuyu-tang according to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions on acne.

Objective : There was an improvement in a patient with psoriasis following the intake of Hoeyeok-tang for 317 days. By analyzing these cases, we reviewed the use of Hoeyeok-tang in skin diseases and attempted to interpret the related Shanghanlun articles. Methods : The diagnostic process was analyzed according to the disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on the Shanghanlun provisions. The progression of psoriasis, which was addressed, was assessed using the PASI score. Results : The patient was diagnosed with Soeum-byung 324, and the PASI score decreased from 13.6 to 0.4 after the intake of Hoeyeok-tang for 317 days. The patient's compliance and expectation from treatment were good, and no specific adverse effect was identified. Conclusions : This study suggests the clinical use of Hoeyeok-tang in psoriasis based on Shanghanlun.
