  • Objectives : This study reports two cases of grade four pressure ulcer patients mainly treated by pharmacopuncture Soyeom and Taklisodok-eum. Methods : Two patients with grade four pressure ulcers at the oriental medicine hospital of Woosuk University were treated by pharmacopuncture Soyeom and herbal medicine Taklisodok-eum. Soyeom was treated once a day and Taklisodok-eum was given three times a day. We then observed the patients' appearances of pressure ulcer and changes of blood test results. Results and Conclusions : After ten days or three months each, wound sizes were reduced, tissue regeneration was accelerated and blood tests were improved. In conclusion, it is our belief that pharmacopuncture and herb medicine are effective to treat grade four pressure ulcers, and future studies will be required to ascertain this method on grade four pressure ulcers.

  • Background and Objectives: Sinusitis is a common disease in the otorhinolaryngology field. It is inflammatory change of the mucous membrane which surrounds the sinus. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of the Taklisodok-eum (TSE) extract on the mouse model with acute sinusitis induced by S. pneumoniae. Methods: Thirty six-week-old male BALB/c mice were divided into three groups: the normal group, the group inoculated with S. pneumoniae which caused allergic rhinitis (control group), and the group treated with the TSE extract after it was treated the same as the control group (sample group). Results: $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation was suppressed, and iNOS & COX-2 production were inhibited by TSE in acute sinusitis. Apoptosis was increased by TSE in acute sinusitis. The number of eosinophils in the sample group noticeably decreased when compared to the control group. In the general morphologic change, the increase of damaged respiratory ciliated epithelia & eosinophils' infiltration was lessin the sample group. Goblet cells were maintained in the sample group. MMP-9, HSP-70 and BrdU decreased in the sample group. Apocrine secretion decreased in the sample group. Conclusion: The findings in this study show that TSE reduces acute sinusitis through its anti-inflammatory effects, such as the inhibition of $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity.

  • Objectives: This case study reports on one patient presenting atypical and chronic disorders after being diagnosed with $Guillain-Barr{\acute{e}}$ Syndrome (GBS). Methods: One patient was treated by Yeongseonjetong-eum-gami, Taklisodok-eum-gami, electroacupuncture, and physical therapy. Any improvement in symptoms was assessed by measuring changes in the motor grade of upper limb weakness, the numerical rating scale (NRS) of lower limb numbness, and GBS scores. Results: After 24 days of treatment, the patient's symptoms of GBS showed little improvement. Conclusions: Traditional Korean medical treatment appeared to be effective in reducing GBS symptoms, but more research is required to confirm these results. When treating GBS patients, the clinician should put effort into distinguishing GBS from other nervous disorders, such as acute onset Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP).

We started herbal medicine mainly Taklisodok-um for pressure ulcer, but changed to Paljung-san due to urinary tract infection on Day 67. During the daily dressing, we inject pharmacopuncture solution subcutaneous ulcer area and spray solution on the cavity of right pressure ulcer. The severity of pressure ulcer was assessed using[NPUAP] pressure ulcer stage, healing rate of pressure ulcer and depth of right side ulcer cavity on Day1, Day15, Day40, Day73, Day95. ■ Results After treatment, the total size of the pressure ulcer was reduced from 90(10*9) to 56(8*7)cm2, healing rate of pressure ulcer increased to 37.8%, depth of pressure ulcer was reduced from 3.5 to 2cm. Though NPUAP stage(Gr 4) was not changed, size and color of pressure ulcer definitely improved compared to Day1. ■ Conclusion This study suggested taht Korean medical treatment could be effective option for treating grade 4 pressure ulcer.
