  • Twenty seven species of pufferfishes (family Tetraodontidae) have been examined to find their generic characters based on olfactory organ, lateral line system, prickles, body form and color characters of specimens collected in 20 places along the coast of Korea from September, 1989 to July, 1994. Based on nostril shape, the genera of Takifugu, Lagocephalus, Plurancanthus, Spheoides and Feroxodon have two nostrils, and those of Ephippion and Canthigaster have a single nostril or nasal tentacle, while Boesernanichthys, Arothron and Chelonodon have no nostril. In the genera of Lagocephalus, Spheoides, Boesemanichthys, Arothron and Feroxodon have only a single well-developed lateral line on the body, in those of Takifugu and Plurancanthus usually have two lateral lines, and those of Chelonodon and Ephippion have two lateral lines merged on the caudal peduncle. Based on the lateral line system and olfactory organ, genus Canthigaster has different characters from the other genera of the family Tetraodontidae. In Ephippion guttifer, the prickles on the dorsal and lateral of the body are enormously enlarged into plates forming a partial carapace. Of the 22 species which have prickly spines, the genera, Lagocephalus, Takifugu stictonotus and Arothron Stellatus have the larger ventral pricklyy spines than the dorsal ones. In genera Lagocephalus most of the species have prickly spines that coverd both the back and belly, while L. inermis has no prickly spines.

  • This is the attempt to study the fish assemblages in eelgrass bed of Jeogu on Geoje Island, Korea. Samples were collected by surf net monthly from August 2009 to July 2010. A total 38 species, 2,335 individuals, and 5,289.8g of fishes were collected. The dominant species were Chaenogobius annularis, Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Rudarius ercodes, Siganus fuscescens, Ditrema temminckii, Takifugu niphobles, Aulichthys japonicus, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Syngnathus schlegeli, Sebastes schlegelii, Pterogobius elapoides, Urocampus nanus, Takifugu pardalis, Hypodytes rubripinnis which accounted for 94.2% of total number of individuals of fish collected. Eelgrass biomass showed a peak in August (DW 121.5g/m$^2$), low values in November (DW 74.9 g/m$^2$) to February (DW 49.3g/m$^2$), and started growing from May (DW 112.8g/m$^2$). Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Sebastes schlegeli, Takifugu niphobles, Syngnathus schlegeli, Urocampus nanus were collected year-round with no clear relationship to the biomass of eelgrass bed.

  • The living Glass puffers, Takifugu niphobles (Bogseom as Korean name), 10 specimens, were purchased at Tongyeong traditional fisheries market every month from November, 2001 to October, 2002, and tested anatomical distribution of the toxicity such as muscle, skin, intestine, liver and ovary by mouse bioassay method. Significant seasonal variations of the toxicity were not shown in muscle, skin, intestine and liver except having lower toxicity in spawning season (May and June) than non-spawning seasons. 92 specimens (76.7%) out of 120 ones were non toxic (below 10 MU/g) for the edible and 28 ones (23.3%) were weakly toxic (10 MU/g∼l00 MU/g) for the non-edible in muscle ranged between 0 MU/g and 46.4 MU/g. All of those toxicity were shown over 10 MU/g in skin for the non-edible in skin ranged from 10.0 MU/g to 674.4 MU/g. Toxicity range in intestine and liver was varied between non-toxic and strongly toxic (over 1,000 MU/g) for individual specimens. Toxicity range of the ovary found only in May (7 specimens) and June (1 specimens) was 84.2 MU/g to 2,191.3 MU/g.

  • The fine structures and histochemical features on the integumentary system of the grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles were examined by means of the light and transmission electron microscopy. Integumentary surface of the grass puffer showed irregular folds in light microscope. The folds of the ventral region are more pronounced than those in the dorsal region. Integumentary system is composed of outer epidermal layer and inner dermal layer. The stratified epidermal layer consists of epithelia, mucous cells, club cells, granular cells and multivacuolar gland. Epithelial cells are classified into superficial, intermediated and basal cell, and free surface of superficial cell is covered with microridges. Glands of the epidermal layer are divided into unicellular and multicellular gland. Mucous cells of multicellular gland contains mucosal materials of neutral glycoprotein. Multivacuolar gland is composed of numerous vacuole cells of about $20{\mu}m$ in axial diameter. Vacuole cells contains a large central vacuole and are connected to another by many desmosomes. The mucous glands and multivacuolar glands are more abundant in ventral region than dorsal integument. The thickness of dermis is more three to five times than epidermis in ventral integument. The collagen fibers, fibrocytes, nerve cells, basal plate of spine and chromatophore are observed in the dermal layer of compact connective tissue.

  • The effects of starvation on the growth, survival and hepatocyte nuclear size of the just hatched grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles larvae were studied. The total length of the larvae showed increase up to 3 days after hatching (DAH), however, 3th to 6th DAH, the starved group grew, slower than the fed group, significantly. The body weight of the fed group grass puffer showed increase steadily during experimental period. The body weight of the starved group showed increase until 3th DAH, however, after 3th DAH the growth of body weight showed minute decrease. The survival of starved group decreased more significantly lower than that of the fed group and all the larvae died on the 6th DAH (p < 0.05). The nuclear area of the hepatocytes in the starved group were not significantly different from those of the hepatocyte nuclei in the fed group to 3th DAH, however, the starved group showed histological differences with smaller hepatocyte nuclear size compared with the fed group from the 4th to 6th DAH. Results form this study can be used as an indicator of the nutritional status of grass puffer larvae.

  • Spermiation was stimulated in the mature grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles, with an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) or carp pituitary extract (CPE). Spermatocrit and sperm density were reduced, but milt production was increased in both the HCG and CPE treatment groups relative to those in the control group (P < 0.05). These results should be useful for increasing the fertilization efficiency in grass puffer breeding programs.
