  • In this study, simple chemical synthesis of green emitting Cd-free InP/ZnS QDs is accomplished by reacting In, P, Zn, and S precursors by one-pot process. The particle size and the optical properties were tailored, by controlling various experimental conditions, including [In]/[MA] (MA: myristic acid) mole ratio, reaction temperature and reaction time. The results of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), and of photoluminescence (PL), reveal that the exciton emission of InP was improved by surface coating, with a layer of ZnS. We report the correlation between each experimental condition and the luminescent properties of InP/ZnS core/shell QDs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to characterize the as-synthesized QDs. In contrast to core nanoparticles, InP/ZnS core/shell treated with surface coating shows a clear ultraviolet peak. Besides this work, we need to study what clearly determines the shell kinetic growth mechanism of InP/ZnS core shell QDs.

  • Mesoporous carbons with tailored pore size were prepared by using sucrose as the carbon source and silicas as the templates. The silica templates were obtained from a hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin-silica hybrids using ammonium perchlorate oxidation at different temperatures to remove the organic matter. The structures and surface chemistry properties of these carbon materials were characterized by $N_2$ adsorption, TEM, SEM and FTIR measurements. The catalytic performances of these carbon materials were investigated through the reduction of nitroaromatic using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent. Compared with other carbon materials, such as active carbon, and carbon materials from the silica templates obtained by using calcination to remove the organic matter, these carbon materials exhibited much higher catalytic activity, no obvious deactivation was observed after recycling the catalyst four times. Higher surface area and pore volume, and the presence of abundant surface oxygen-containing functional groups, which originate from the special preparation process of carbon material, are likely responsible for the high catalytic property of these mesoporous carbon materials.

  • Electrochemical anodization has been interested due to its useful way for the nano-scale architecture of metal oxides obtained from a metal substrate. By using this method, it is easy to control the morphology of the oxide materials by controlling electrochemical conditions. Among oxide materials obtained from the transition metals such as Ti, V, W, etc., in this paper, the morphological study of anodized $TiO_2$ was employed at various voltage conditions in fluoric based electrolyte, and the effects of applied voltage (sweep rate and retention time) on the tube morphologies were investigated. Furthermore, by using anodization of tungsten substrate (W), we fabricated the porous structure of $WO_3$ and provided merits of tailored structure for the hybridization of inorganic and organic materials as electrochromic (EC) applications. The hybrid porous $WO_3$ shows multi-chromic properties during the EC reactions at specific voltage conditions. From these results, the anodization process with tailoring nano-structure is one of the promising methods for EC applications.

  • Pervious concrete is a tailored-property concrete with high water permeability which allow the passage of water to flow through easily through the existing interconnected large pore structure. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation into the development of pervious concrete with reduced cement content and recycled concrete aggregate for sustainable permeable pavement construction. High fineness ground granulated blast furnace slag was used to replace up to 70 % cement by weight. The properties of the pervious concrete were evaluated by determining the compressive strength at 7 and 28 days, void content and water permeability under falling head. The compressive strength of pervious concrete increased with a reduction in the maximum aggregate size from 20 to 13 mm. The relationship between 28-day compressive strength and porosity for pervious concrete was adversely affected by the use of recycled concrete aggregate instead of natural aggregate. However, the binder materials type, age, aggregate size and test specimen shape had marginal effect on the strength-porosity relationship. The results also showed that the water permeability of pervious concrete is primarily influenced by the porosity and not affected by the use of recycled concrete aggregate in place of natural aggregate. The empirical inter-relationships developed among porosity, compressive strength and water permeability could be used in the mix design of pervious concrete with either natural or recycled concrete aggregates to meet the specification requirements of compressive strength and water permeability.

  • A systematic numerical experiment has been conducted to study droplet gasification in high pressure environments with pressure oscillations. The general frame of previous rigorous model[1] is retained but tailored for flash equilibrium calculation of vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics. Time-dependent conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentrations are formulated in axisymmetric coordinate system for both the droplet interior and ambient gases. In addition, a unified property evaluation scheme based on the fundamental equation of state and empirical methods are used to find fluid thermophysical properties over the entire thermodynamic domain of interest. The governing equations with appropriate physical boundary conditions are numerically time integrated using an implicit finite-difference method with a dual time-stepping technique. A series of calculation have been carried out to investigate the gasification of an isolated n-pentane droplet in a nitrogen gas environment over a wide range of ambient pressures and frequencies. Results show that the mean pressures and frequencies of the ambient gas have strong influences on the characteristics of the droplet gasification. The amplitude of the response increases with increasing pressure, and the magnitude of the vaporization response increases with the frequency.

  • CAD/CAM program developers have made substantial progress in enabling engineers to design, analyze, visualize, visualize, and simulate the performance of structures and systems. Many researchers, however, agree that there is still a way to go before the existing commercial computer software can be used in ship structural analysis to their full potential as solvers which can identify opportunities to reduce man-hours and cut costs. CAD systems used for these works in ship yards are general-purposed and not custom-tailored for ship structures, which force end-users to do tiresome and routine works. The new preprocessor "MeshGen" announced in this study can load several ship types and user-friendly generate their FE meshes employing the object-oriented approach based on the parametric and top-down design. Also "MeshGen" reduces dramatically the time required to prepare CAD models under window-based environments on desktop personal computers and makes it much easier and faster for end-users to change topology and material properties.

  • The objective of this study is to prepare an artificial extracellular matrix (ECM) for cell culture by using polymer hydrogels. The polymer used is a cytocompatible water-soluble phospholipid polymer: poly[2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-n-butyl methacrylate-p-nitrophenyloxycarbonyl poly(ethylene oxide) methacrylate (MEONP)] (PMBN). The hydrogels are prepared using a cross-linking reaction between PMBN and diamine compounds, which can easily react to the MEONP moiety under mild conditions. The most favorable diamine is the bis(3-aminopropyl) poly(ethylene oxide) (APEO). The effects of cross-linking density and the chemical structure of cross-linking molecules on the mechanical properties of the hydrogel are evaluated. The storage modulus of the hydrogel is tailored by tuning the PMBN concentration and the MEONP/amino group ratio. The porous structure of the hydrogel networks depends not only on these parameters but also on the reaction temperature. We prepare a hydrogel with $40-50{\mu}m$ diameter pores and more than 90 wt% swelling. The permeation of proteins through the hydrogel increases dramatically with an increase in pore size. To induce cell adhesion, the cell-attaching oligopeptide, RGDS, is immobilized onto the hydrogel using MEONP residue. Bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells (BPAECs) are cultured on the hydrogel matrix and are able to migrate into the artificial matrix. Hence, the RGDS-modified PMBN hydrogel matrix with cross-linked APEO functions as an artificial ECM for growing cells for applications in tissue engineering.

  • A study of high-pressure n-heptane droplet vaporization is conducted with emphasis placed on equilibrium at vapor-liquid interface. General frame of previous rigorous model[1] is retained but tailored for flash equilibrium calculation of vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics. The model is based on complete time-dependent conservation equations with a full account of variable properties and vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics. The influences of high-pressure phenomena, including ambient gas solubility, thermodynamic non-ideality, and property variation on the droplet evaporation are investigated. The governing equations and associated moving interfacial boundary conditions are solved numerically using a implicit scheme with the preconditioning method and the dual time integration technique. And a parametric study of entire droplet vaporization history as a function of ambient pressure, temperature has been conducted. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations. For low ambient temperatures, the droplet lifetime first increases with pressures, then decreases for high pressures. For higher ambient temperatures, the droplet lifetime increase with less amplitude than that of low ambient temperatures, which then decreases with more amplitude than that of low temperatures. The solubility of nitrogen can not be neglected in the high pressure and it becomes higher as the pressure goes up.

  • In may automated systems such as manufacturing systems and process plants, an industrial network or fieldbus is a very important component for the exchange of various and sometimes crucial information. Some of the information has a tendency to rapidly lose its value as time elapses after its creation. Such information or data is called real-time data that includes sensor values and control commands. In order to deliver these data in time, the fieldbus network should be tailored to have short delay with respect to the individual time limit of various data. Fine-tuning the network for a given traffic requires the knowledge on the relationship between the protocol parameters such as timer values and the performance measure such as network delay. This paper presents a mathematical performance model to calculate communication delays of the Profibus FMS network when the timer value TTR and the traffic characteristics are given. The results of this model is compared to those from experiments to assess the model's validity.
