Effects of Drawbead Dimensions to the Weld-Line Movements for the Deep Drawing of Tailor-Welded Blanks (용접 판재 성형 가공시의 용접선 이동에 미치는 드로비드 치수 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate quantitatively the effects of drawbead dimensions to the weld line movements for the deep drawing of the tailor welded blanks. Square blanks have been used and five different circular drawbeads were installed in experimental apparatus. The differences in the weld-line movements and the tendencies of the strain distributions in thickness were investigated by experimental and analytical methods. The results of the weldline movement show that the smaller the radius of drawbead installed, the larger the values of movements. Also it is shown for thickness strain in central and diagonal direction that the larger the dimension of drawbead, the larger the values of maximum thickness strain. The drawbead adds the additional restraining forces to the blank, hence the movement of weld line could be controlled by the adequate drawbead installation

  • In this study, the forming behavior of Tailor welded HS and IF steel s-rail stamping is analyzed by experiments and simulations. According to the results, uniform strain distribution in the formed part is most important to prevent springback and wrinkle formation. For that purpose, it is most effective to distribute uniformly the contact pressure of blank and bland holder.

  • Design of a weld line in a tailor welded blank is indispensable for good manufacturing of stamped parts as assigned, since the intial weld line is distorted severely with forming. The initial weld line has to be determined such that desired weld line in a formed part can be obtained. The initial weld line was predicted by inverse finite element analysis from the desired weld line in a formed part. The inverse approach is applied to the cylindrical and square cup drawing with tailor welded blanks. The applications demonstrates that the approach is useful for design of weld line of tailor welded blank.

  • A tailor welded blank (TWB) is a welded blank comprised of two or more sheets with different properties - thickness, strengths or formabilities. TWBs are applied to the body panels to reduce weight and cost of the part. In this research, ultra high strength steel and high ductility steel were joined and laser tailor welded blanks were implemented. Yb:YAG laser welding tests were conducted with various welding conditions, and mechanical and geometrical characteristics of weldments were evaluated.

  • Recently, ULSAB(Ultra Light Steel Auto Body) concept is getting more attention due to various benefits in automotive body design. One of the ULSAB efforts is making a door with TWB(Tailor Welded Blanks). In TWB, two or more patches of steel panels are welded together before stamping process. In this research, domains and thicknesses of the patches in a front door structure are determined by a series of optimization schemes composed of topology, size and shape optimization and DOE(Design of Experiments) scheme. A door is designed to have better performances compared to exiting structure considering static stiffness and natural frequency. The final design is discussed and compared to the existing design.

  • The combination of tailor welded blank (TWB) and hot stamping often offers improved crash-worthiness and reduced mass of stamped parts in the automobile body. To investigate the formability of laser TWB and the reliability of weld line, the present study used 22MnB5 boron steel sheet of the same thickness and used the Erichsen cupping test at elevated temperatures. The effects of laser direction, die temperature, weld line positions and forming speed on formability(the limiting dome height) were studied and the results were compared with the formability of the base material.

Experimental Formability Investigation for FSW Sheets with Respect to Base Material's Directional Combination (모재의 방향성에 따른 마찰교반용접 판재의 성형성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In order to investigate the formability of friction stir welded(FSW) tailor welded blanks(TWB) with respect to the base material's directional combination, aluminum alloy AA6111-T4 sheets were welded with three different conjoining types: RD-RD, TD-RD and TD-TD. Here, RD and TD represent rolling and transverse directions, respectively. For experimental formability study, three tests with gradual complexity were performed: the simple tension test with various weld line directions for uni-axial elongation, the hemisphere dome stretching test for biaxial stretching and the cylindrical cup deep drawing test. As a result, all three forming tests showed that RD-RD type samples exhibited the best formability, while TD-TD type sheets showed the least formability performance.

  • Forming more than two parts of sheet metal in a single stamping operation lowers production costs, reduces weight, and heightens dimensional accuracy. The tailored blank (TB) is a laser-welded or mash-seam-welded sheet metal with different thicknesses, different strengths, or different coatings. Recently, automotive manufacturers have been interested in tailored blanks because of their desire to improve the rigidity, weight reduction, crash durability, and cost savings. Therefore the application to auto-bodies has increased. However, as tailored blanks do not behave like un-welded blanks in press forming operations, stamping engineers no longer rely on conventional forming techniques. Field try-outs are very important manufacturing processes for an economic die-making. In the field try-outs, the rounded geometries of tool and the drawbead shape and size in die face are generally modified when the forming defects can not be removed by the adjustment of forming process parameters. In this study, the field try-outs of tailored door inner panel are introduced and evaluated. The behaviours of laser tailored blank associated with different thickness combinations in the forming process of door inner panel are described focusing on terms of experimental investigations on the formability.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the weldline movement of the laser welded sheets during the warm deep drawing process. For this investigation, Five steps of temperature ranges, from room temperature to $200^{\circ}C$, and two kinds of thickness combination, 0.8 mm${\times}$1.2 mm and 0.8 mm${\times}$1.6 mm SCP1 material sheets, were adopted. Also, the numerical analysis using the PAM-STAMP has been carried out with the same models as the specimens. As a result the higher temperature was adopted, the less weld-line movement was observed.
