Virtual colonoscopy is favored over conventional colonoscopy because its non-invasive procedure can avoid complications that may happen in a conventional approach and because it can cleanse colon electronically instead of uncomfortable conventional colon cleansing. Electronic Colon Cleansing(ECC) has to deal with not only removing tagged fecal material but also recovering Partial Volume Effect(PVE) due to tagging material. This paper proposes an ECC method restoring inherent natural PVE while previous approaches focused only on reducing PVE due to tagged fecal material. The proposed method reduces PVE using 3-dimensional adaptive density correction and then replaces tagged fecal material into air. Next, it generates natural PVE for the replaced air adjacent to soft tissue and finally makes smooth transition of gray values for soft tissue adjacent to the replaced air. The proposed method applied to eleven patient data, and showed promising results.
In order to produce a high quality (intelligibility and naturalness) synthesized speech, it is very important to get an accurate grapheme-to-phoneme conversion and prosody model. In this paper, we analyzed Chinese texts using a segmentation, POS tagging and unknown word recognition. We present a grapheme-to-phoneme conversion using a dictionary-based and rule-based method. We constructed a prosody model using a probabilistic method and a decision tree-based error correction method. According to the result from the above analysis, we can successfully select and concatenate exact synthesis unit of syllables from the Chinese Synthesis DB.
Morphological analysis and POS tagging require a dictionary for the language at hand . In this fashion though it is impossible to analyze a language a dictionary. We also have difficulty if significant portion of the vocabulary is new or unknown . This paper explores the possibility of learning morphology of an agglutinative language. in particular Korean language, without any prior lexical knowledge of the language. We use unsupervised learning in that there is no instructor to guide the outcome of the learner, nor any tagged corpus. Here are the main characteristics of the approach: First. we use only raw corpus without any tags attached or any dictionary. Second, unlike many heuristics that are theoretically ungrounded, this method is based on statistical methods , which are widely accepted. The method is currently applied only to Korean language but since it is essentially language-neutral it can easily be adapted to other agglutinative languages.
In this paper, we propose post-rpocessing method that corrects a misrecognized character by generated a characater recognizer using morphological analyzer and spelling corrector. The proposed post-processing consists of sthree phases : First, our method pass through morhological analyzer which only outputted necessary information for spelling correcting, doesn't analyze a bundle of phrases, and detects the location of misrecognized character. Second, tagging the generated candidate character using the information of character substitution table and grapheme substitution/separating table. Then we retry analysis after the misrecognition character has been substituted. Finally we select table, we investigate misrecognized charcters in CORPUS. Reliability analysis used to frequency of randomly selected about 100,000 words in CORPUS. A korean character recognizer demonstrates 93% correction rate without a post-processing. The entire recognition rate of our system with a post-processing exceeds 97% correction rate.
This paper introduces a prosodic phrasing method in Korean to improve the naturalness of speech synthesis, especially in text-to-speech conversion. In prosodic phrasing, it is necessary to understand the structure of a sentence through a language processing procedure, such as part-of-speech (POS) tagging and parsing, since syntactic structure correlates better with the prosodic structure of speech than with other factors. In this paper, the prosodic phrasing procedure is treated from two perspectives: dependency parsing and prosodic phrasing using dependency relations. This is appropriate for Ural-Altaic, since a prosodic boundary in speech usually concurs with a governor of dependency relation. From experimental results, using the proposed method achieved 12% improvement in prosody boundary prediction accuracy with a speech corpus consisting 300 sentences uttered by 3 speakers.
We demonstrate how social media content can be used to predict the unemployment rate, a real-world indicator. We present a novel method for predicting the unemployment rate using social media analysis based on natural language processing and statistical modeling. The system collects social media contents including news articles, blogs, and tweets written in Korean, and then extracts data for modeling using part-of-speech tagging and sentiment analysis techniques. The autoregressive integrated moving average with exogenous variables (ARIMAX) and autoregressive with exogenous variables (ARX) models for unemployment rate prediction are fit using the analyzed data. The proposed method quantifies the social moods expressed in social media contents, whereas the existing methods simply present social tendencies. Our model derived a 27.9% improvement in error reduction compared to a Google Index-based model in the mean absolute percentage error metric.
5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide (AICAR), a structural analog of adenosine monophosphate (AMP), promotes oxidative remodeling in muscle cells. AICAR activates AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK), thus increasing lipid metabolism, respiration, and mitochondrial counts. This process is called oxidative remodeling, which enhances the physical endurance of mice. To test this drug on an invertebrate that is genetically similar to humans, we used the small water crustacean Daphnia magna, which is sensitive to changes in water conditions. We tested the effects of pH on the efficacy of AICAR using two methods. One method measured oxygen consumption of Daphnia in oxygen chambers. The other method determined lipid levels of Daphnia through fluorescent tagging of lipids. The results showed that when exposed to AICAR at pH 6.58, D. magna consumed more oxygen and had lower overall levels of lipids, which is consistent with the expected effects of AICAR, such as increased respiration and lipid metabolism.
