Comparison with Polarization Characteristic of Polymers

  • We carried out to measure the variations of potential with current density polymers. The results were particularly examined to identify the influences on corrosion potential and corrosion rate of various factors including temperature and pH. The Tafel slope for anodic dissolution was determined by the polarization effect depending on these conditions. The optimum conditions were established for each case. The second anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density were designated as the relative corrosion sensitivity($I_{r}I_{f}$). The mass transfer coefficient value (${\alpha}$) was determined with the Tafel slope for anodic dissolution based on the polarization effect with optimum conditions.

Redox Reaction on Polarization Curve Variations of Polymer with Enzymes

  • Experiments were carried out to measure variations in the oxidation potential and current density using the polarization curves of polycarbonate. The results were then examined to identify the influences affecting the oxidation potential related to various conditions, such as temperature, pH, and oxydase(citrate and lipase). The lines representing the active anodic and cathodic dissolution shifted only slightly in the potential direction relative to temperature, pH, and the effect of the enzyme. The Tafel slope for the anodic and cathodic dissolution was determined such that the reversibility polarization was indicated as being effected by various conditions. The slope of the polarization curves describing the active-to-passive transition region shifted noticeably in their direction. Also, by varying the conditions, the optimum conditions for the most ready transform were identified, including temperature, pH, oxidation rate, and resistance of oxidation potential. The critical oxidation sensitivity(I(sub)r/I(sub)f) of the anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density was also determined, which is used in measuring the critical corrosion sensitivity of a polycarbonate.

Corrosion of rebar in carbon fiber reinforced polymer bonded reinforced concrete

  • Several reinforced concrete structures that get deteriorated by rebar corrosion are retrofitted using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). When rebar comes in direct contact with CFRP, rebar may corrode, as iron is more active than carbon. Progression of corrosion of rebar in strengthened RC structures has been carried out when rebar comes in direct contact with CFRP. The experimentation is carried out in two phases. In phase I, corrosion of bare steel bar is monitored by making its contact with CFRP. In phase II, concrete specimens with surface bonded CFRP were casted and subjected to the realistic exposure conditions keeping direct contact between rebar and CFRP. Progression of corrosion has been monitored by various parameters: Half-cell potential, Tafel extrapolation and Linear Polarisation Resistance. On termination of exposure, to find residual bond stress between rebar and concrete, pull-out test was performed. Rebar in contact with CFRP has shown substantially higher corrosion. The level of corrosion will be more with more area of contact.

  • 환경 친화적 대체 에너지로 연료전지가 많이 연구되고 있다. 그 중 높은 에너지밀도와 휴대성 때문에 직접 메탄올 연료전지(DMFC)에 대해 많은 관심을 가지고 연구중에 있다. 그러나 성능을 저하시키는 메탄올 crossover, 음극의 과전압 등과 같은 풀어야 할 문제들이 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제를 이해하기 위해 전기화학 반응식인 Tafel 식과 한계전류밀도식을 적용하여 전류-전압 곡선식을 해석적으로 구하였다. 운전변수를 변화시켜 해석적 해를 계산하여 DMFC의 거동을 분석하였다.

  • For the evaluation of corrosion resistance of Al 6061-T6 alloy, Tafel method and immersion test was performed with Friction Stir Weld(FSW) and Gas Metal Arc Weld(GMAW). The Tafel and immersion test results indicated that GMA weld was severely attacked compared with those of friction stir weld. It may be mainly due to the galvanic corrosion mechanism act on the GMA weld.

Electrochemical Frequency Modulation: Solution Resistance and Double Layer Capacitance Considerations

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate total current under steady-state conditions for a material undergoing corrosion using the electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) technique, taking into account the presence of solution resistance and double layer capacitance. The analysis involving linearization of the Tafel curve allowed for the estimation of corrosion parameters. Results showed that the output signal was dependent on fundamental frequencies and their multiples. In addition, the output signal almost manifested itself at frequencies that were sums of fundamental frequencies of the applied sinusoidal signal. The harmonics calculated showed a significant shift from the principal frequency of input signals. The investigation involved the influence of corrosion current and anode-to-cathode Tafel slope ratio on faradaic and non-faradaic currents (including the average and RMS). The model presented showed both qualitative and quantitative improvements over the previously developed EFM technique that ignored the influence of solution resistance and the double layer capacitance while assuming the applied DC potential corresponded to the corrosion potential of the corroding material.

  • 수용액계에서 정극활물질의 안정성을 1 M LiOH 용액에서 Tafel plot를 통해서 측정하였으며, 이 때 $LiM_xMn_{2-x}O_4$(x=0.05~0.1) 전극은 100 mA에서 0.13~0.15 mV의 과전압으로 $LiMn_2O_4$ 전극보다 0.05 mV가 낮은 과전압을 나타냈다. 또한 전위변화에 따른 전해질의 전도도는 $LiM_xMn_{2-x}O_4$가 스피넬 구조의 $LiMn_2O_4$보다 높고 나타났으며, $Mn^{+2}$의 용해에 의한 용액저항은 상대적으로 낮게 나타났다.

  • Recently European Council(EU) published the RoHS(restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) which is prohibit the use of Pb, Hg, Cd, $Cr^{+6}$, PBB or PBDE in the electrical and electronic equipments. So EU member States shall ensure that, from 1 July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain 6 hazardous substances. The one of the most important in electronics manufacturing process is soldering. Soldering process use the chemical substances which are applied in fluxing and cleaning processes and it can generate the malfunction of electronics caused by corrosion in the fields conditions. Therefore this study researched on the polarization and Tafel properties of Sn40Pb and Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu(SAC) solder based on the electrochemical theory. We prepared SnPb specimens which was aged in $150^{\circ}C,\;180^{\circ}C$ for 15 minutes ana Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu specimens that was aged in $180^{\circ}C,\;220^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes. Experimental polarization curves were measured in distilled ionized water and $3.5 wt\%$, 1 mole NaCl electrolyte of $40^{\circ}C$, pH 7.5. Ag/AgCl and graphite were utilized by reference and counter electrode, respectively. To observe the electrochemical reaction, polarization test was conducted from -250 mV to +250 mV. From the polarization curves that were composed of anodic and cathodic curves, we obtained Tafel slop, reversible electrode potential(Ecorr) and exchange current density(Icorr).
