  • This paper presents a set of candidate regulatory requirements for TV band devices (TVBDs) in the Rep. of Korea. To guarantee the protection of incumbent services, especially digital TV (DTV) and wireless microphones, in TV frequency bands, we suggest minimum separation distances of TVBDs from the noise-limited contour according to incumbent users and TVBD types. This paper also deals with multiple sets of separation distances of a co-channel TVBD network from a DTV protected contour on the basis of the radio propagation characteristics of different geographic areas to make good use of TV white space (TVWS) and safely protect the DTV service. We present a low-power transmission mode of TVBDs and the relevant separation distances for small-cell deployment. The service coverage reduction ratio of a TVBD network is investigated in the presence of DTV interference in four geographic areas. The TVWS field verification results, conducted on the island of Jeju (Rep. of Korea), show that incumbent services operate well without harmful interference from neighboring TVBDs with the proposed separation distances.

  • Due to the advance of broadband communication networks including the Internet, the release of diverse media, and the busy life cycle of modern people, it became difficult to watch TV programs strictly according to the program schedule. Instead, demand to download and watch the programs at any time on TV is increasing. In order to meet the demand, terrestrial DTV broadcasters developed a TV service which provides various on-demand contents by integrating terrestrial DTV network and the Internet without enforcing viewers to subscribe broadcasting services such as IPTV or CableTV, and standardized it as OHTV(Open Hybrid TV). In this paper, we explain the current status of OHTV standard and worldwide hybrid TV services and their technical standards. We also provide a strategy for the next version of OHTV standard in order to enhance the value of OHTV.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide an answer for the following question: What are the major shifts and implications of the unprecedently competitive and rapidly changing media ecosystem in the era of N-screen and OTT services? I've attempted to understand the complex and competitive nexus among media from an historical context by focusing on the displacement vs. complement thesis. The TPC model by Han has been employed for the analysis of the current dynamics of US media industries by triangulating three areas: Technology/industry, public policy and consumer/culture. More specifically, the US media landscape is initially divided into two competitive turfs - the competitors equipped with OTT services and the legacy media industry, and then the traditional media industry was grouped again into PayTV group(telecom service providers with IPTV and mobile TV, cable/Satellite TV networks) and Free (over-the-air) TV networks. Six major shifts were identified by the analysis: power shift in telecom carriers, power shifts in TV industry, Telecom/OTT partnership, time shifts, place shifts, and finally business model shifts.

  • Although searching service is popularized in the PC-based internet environment, it is not (or rarely) supported on TV, which is the major multimedia equipment in the living room. Several trials are made to port established PC-based searching systems onto TV-set but failed to get popularity among viewers as they did not consider the viewers' modality. Operating the searching system should not disturb viewers in watching TV (for example, TV screen should not be (even partially) covered by the searching system's graphics) and the number of pushing the remote controller's buttons should be minimized so that viewers can keep watching TV without glancing at the searching system's graphics. In this paper, the author introduces a new searching system running on TV-set, which is designed to reflect properly the viewers' modality. The searching system is also compatible with the data service standard adopted by the domestic broadcasting networks so that it can be easily implemented by them.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the Munjeonsa(SPC) has influenced the way terrestrial broadcasting networks produce drama. The study has three research objectives. First, this study investigates why the networks use SPC for drama production. Second, the study examines the features in the process of the setup and operation of SPC. Third, the study identifies the impacts of SPC on networks' drama production. This study analyzes which was produced by KBS SPC. The results of this study are as follows. First, networks introduce SPC to procure an enormous production costs and to manage the production system transparently and efficiently. Second, the feature of networks' SPC(KGCS SPC) is that it has a unique dual structure with main and project SPC. Third, SPC influences drama production system in various ways; revitalization of external investment, accounting transparency, growing of network's planning dramas, securing intellectual properties and revenue diversification.

  • The aim of this study is to examine agglomeration patterns of advertising industries and spatial networks of advertisement production in Korea. The focus of analysis is the agglomeration pattern of advertising industries within Seoul because these are agglomerated in Seoul like other business services. Analysis methods are local Moran's I index and location quotient with the regional percentages of each sector's number of employees. Clusters in Gangnam Area are related to start-up advertising firms and global agencies entering domestic advertising markets. Network analysis is used to investigate the spatial networks of TV advertisement production between advertising agencies(AA) and film productions(FP). After transformation of AA-FP network matrix to regional matrix centrality index and brokerage scores are calculated. This analysis shows individual region's different role and position in the AA-FP network. Many agencies in or out of Gangnam Area outsource most advertisement makings to film productions in Gangnam Area. Advertising industry dusters in Gangnam Area is important as of the destination of advertisement production networks and the circulation of those networks.

  • As the cultural industry might be regarded as the most intimate industry to the general public, it is relatively easy to be widely accepted. With the development of the internet, not only people in various countries have been closely connected, but production networks around the world might also be connected with each other. This article will use data and case studies to clarify how global production networks operate in the development of the cultural industry. By taking the relatively novel point of contact of connection between global production networks and the development of the cultural industry, it summarizes the development models of the film, television and music sectors in the Korean cultural industries. The study found that the development model of the film, television and music industry from the 1990s to the present could be divided into four phases, and most firms are now in the outsourcing and expansion phase. Relying on the huge production networks, these two industries are likely to be improving their popularity and added value through global cooperation.

  • Advances in mobile communication and digital video technology enable to commercialize converged multimedia services such as VoD in the mobile networks. Media convergence is evolving into U-Cloud and mobile IP-TV services constituted by high-speed mobile multimedia networks and integrated personal devices. This paper proposes a resource allocation scheme to guarantee QoS of converged mobile multimedia services, and simultaneously maximize legacy services in heterogeneous wireless networks. Performances are analyzed by the simulation.
