Effectiveness Measurement of TV Advertisement for Fashion Goods with EEG and Affective Responses as Determined by the Types of Appeal (뇌파와 감정반응 평가를 통한 패션제품의 TV 광고효과 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to apply a scientific and systematic method for assessing fashion goods' TV ads effects by EEG and questionnaires as determined by the type of ads appeal. Ads stimulants used in the survey were limited to underwear and sportswear that were advertised during $2000{\sim}2002$ on TV: 4 information-transferring and 4 emotion-evoking ads were used. Subjects were thirty healthy male and female college students. EEG was extracted from six lobes and the recorded EEG was analyzed by the range of frequency of ${\theta},\;{\alpha}\;and\;{\beta}$ waves. Data were analyzed by SPSS 11.0 with reliability test, $x^2$-analysis, t-test and frequency analysis. The emotion-evoking ads showed higher scores in memory, recall and attitude towards the ads. The responses of ${\theta}\;and\;{\alpha}$ wave were active throughout the ads but the response of ${\beta}$ wave was not. The results by the survey and the EEG test showed high similarities, indicating the EEG tests could be used as the supplementary tool for measuring ads effects.

  • Screen filter of PDP TV plays an important role in satisfying the EMI/EMC specifications. Two types of filters, the mesh type and the sputter type, are used in PDP TVs, and this paper presents measurement results of the shielding effectiveness (SE) in the frequency range from 50MHz to 1GHz. Two methods were used for the measurement, one using network analyzer (NA) in an open area test site(OATS), and the other using the screen room. The overall conclusion is that the shielding effectiveness of the screen filter is related to the surface resistance of the screen filter. The mesh type screen filters are superior to the sputter types in the shielding effectiveness, which is varying with the frequency.

ATSC Digital Television Signal Detection with Spectral Correlation Density

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of spectrum sensing for advanced television systems committee (ATSC) digital television (DTV) signal detection. To exploit the cyclostationarity of the ATSC DTV signals, we employ spectral correlation density (SCD) as the decision statistic and propose an optimal detection algorithm. The major difficulty is in obtaining the probability distribution functions of the SCD. To overcome the difficulty, we probabilistically model the pilot frequency location and employ Gaussian approximation for the SCD distribution. Then, we obtain a practically implementable detection algorithm that outperforms the industry leading systems by 2-3 dB. We also propose various techniques that greatly reduce the system complexity with performance degradation by only a few tenths of decibels. Finally, we show how robust the system is to the estimation errors of the noise power spectral density level and the probability distribution of the pilot frequency location.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method to broadcast digital television signals using single frequency networks (SFNs) within the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) transmission systems. In implementing the SFNs of an 8-vestigial side band (8-VSB) Digital Television (DTV) system, the ambiguity problem of the trellis coder is unavoidable in a conventional ATSC transmission system. We propose a memory initialization of the trellis coder to resolve this ambiguity problem. Since the proposed scheme to synchronize multiple transmitters minimizes the changes from the conventional ATSC system, the hardware complexity for these changes is very low. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme makes a less than 0.1 dB degradation at the threshold of visibility with a bit error rate of $3{\times}10^{-6}$ in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. It is possible to reduce the performance degradation by increasing the initialization period of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper describes a new transient voltage suppressor(TVS) with a low insertion loss and a very wide frequency bandwidth to protect antenna circuit from transient voltages. Conventional protection devices have some problems such as low frequency bandwidth and high insertion loss. In order to improve these limitations, a coaxal type TVS, which consists of a gas tube is developed. The performance of the proposed transient voltage suppressor is tested by using a combination surge generator specified in IEC 61000-4-5 standard and by using a network analyzer of 40 MHz ∼ 5GHz bandwidth. From the experimental results, it is confirmed that the proposed TVS has an enough protection performance in low insertion loss and in wide frequency bandwidth

  • As cable TV networks have a media feature that is a broadband wire network, they can provide not only TV broadcasting services but also communication services. Accordingly, the cable TV network is mentioned as the optimal network for convergence of broadcasting and communication services. Recently, Available frequencies of the cable TV network have become insufficient as enhancement of video quality, increment of VoD service, and growth of high-speed internet service. This paper presents a new implementation method of switched digital video (SDV) technology that is introduced for obtaining additional frequency band. In the SDV system, only TV channels requested from viewer are sent and non-requested channels are dropped. The presented SDV uses a sharing method of TV broadcasting and communication service in a same frequency band. This method shows increase of spectrum efficient from switching of TV service channels without building a complex system.

  • Cognitive radio (CR), which is proposed as a technology that utilizes the frequency resources effectively, has been studied to relive scarcity of the frequency resources. Also, FCC revises the regulation to reuse the TV white spaces for applying CR system and allows to use the TV white spaces by CR devices and use of CR device may be regularized after conversion by DTV in 2009. In order to reuse the TV bands without harmful interference to primary user, correct spectrum sensing should be needed to detect DTV signals that is the primary user in TV bands. In this paper, we detect the DTV signal using FFT-based pilot sensing and cooperative sensing scheme is applied for the reliability of the sensing performance and the accuracy of the detection probability. Also, in order to make the reliable decision, the majority rule is proposed.

  • In this paper, we analyze and simulate the performance of a pilot signal detection algorithm based on fast Fourier transform (FFT) for several system parameters in order to detect advanced television system committee digital television (ATSC DTV) signals. Requirements for detecting DTV signals are analyzed. And the detection performance is compared according to sensing frequency and time. Form the simulation results, it is confirmed that the signal detection performance increases as the sensing frequency rises. The results of this paper can be applied for implementing cognitive radio (CR) systems in the frequency band of DTV signals.

Design parameter analysis for ATSC 1.0 single frequency networks based on receiver multipath handling performance

  • This work proposes suitable network configurations for single frequency networks (SFNs) with ATSC 1.0 based on network coverage calculations and the laboratory multipath handling performance of commercial receivers. SFNs are widely used for delivering terrestrial digital television services because of their efficient use of the spectrum. In Mexico the analogue television transmissions switch-off occurred on 31 December 2016. Thus it is expected the adopted ATSC 1.0 system will be in force for the next several years despite the recent standardization of the ATSC 3.0 system. As ATSC 1.0 uses 8-VSB modulation the multipath handling capability of receivers is critical for the design of SFNs. The presented network planning results help develop technical normativity for implementing SFNs in Mexico and other countries that use ATSC 1.0. SFNs with transmitter separation up to 130 km are fully covered for outdoor reception mainly due to the directivity of the receiving antenna. Moreover for indoor reception at least 70% of an SFN coverage area can be achieved with a transmitter separation of up to 60 km depending on the radiated power and the transmitter antenna height.
