  • In this paper study on a toroidal switched reluctance motor(TSRM) is described. The structure of the TSRM is different from that of a conventional SRM The main windings of the TSRM are wound around york of the stator while those of the conventional SRM are wound around its stator poses. Therefore the TSRM has many advantages and drive system, winding connection, inductance, drive method, torque, current waveform of the TSRM are different from those of the conventional SRM In this paper, the TSRM is analysed by simulation and experiment.

  • This paper discusses comparison between a CSRM(conventional SRM) and a TSRM(toroidal SRM). Unlike the CSRM, the TSRM has its windings mounted around the stator york instead of the stator pole. Therefore, the TSRM has many different properties in terms of the structure as well as the waveform of phase currents, phase voltages, back-EMF, flux linkages, etc. This paper presents the theoretical comparison between the TSRM and the CSRM followed by simulation results.

  • The paper proposes the characteristics analysis for a Transverse flux type Switched Reluctance Motor(TSRM) considering the nonlinear magnetic phenomena. To investigate the nonlinear parameters of magnetic equivalent circuit, the designed TSRM is analyzed by the 2D and 3D finite element method as functions of input current and angular displacement. On the base of FEM analysis results, the current, torque, back EMF and output power wave of TSRM are simulated from the motion equation by MATLAB/Simulink. The simulated performance characteristics for a 4-phase, 24-pole TSRM are verified by experimental results of a prototype TSRM.

  • In this paper, detection of rotor position at standstill of toroidal switched reluctance motor(TSRM) with built-in search coils using neural network is proposed. When search coils are used as a position sensor, it has many advantages like low cost, decrease in the volume, high robust characteristics and wide applications. However, the initial rotor position detection is very difficult because the search coil's EMF doesn't exist at standstill. In this paper, detection of initial rotor position of TSRM with built-in search coils using neural network is suggested. The experiment for the proposed method are presented. As a result of that, the accuracy and validity of the proposed method is verified.

  • Several attempts to design the best-available thermosetting road markings by using MMA to improve the durability and retroreflectivity are presented in this paper. In order to improve field applicability, the components of main materials were designed by means of reducing the hardening time lower than eight minutes. The optimum mixing ratio of thermosetting road marking was TSRM-6 composed of 15.6 wt% of MMA monomer ($Tg=105^{\circ}C$), 6.0 wt% of PMMA (MW = 70,000, $Tg=60^{\circ}C$) and 1.2 wt% of TMPTA (MW = 338, $Tg=27^{\circ}C$). Also the homogeneous mixing of all components was necessary. The use of ceramic glass beads with an optimized TSRM-6 exhibited excellent performance by achieving retroreflectivity coefficients of 431, 354 and $172mcd{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}lux^{-1}$ for dry, wet and rainy test condition, respectively at two hundred thousand cycles.

  • This paper presents a new method of detecting rotor position in Toroidal Switched Reluctance Motor (TSRM). In this paper, low cost and robust characteristics of rotor position detection method are focused in order to compensate for disadvantage of general sensors. Search coils wound through the hole of the stator poles are used for detection of the rotor position in TSRM. Rotor position detection is achieved through electromotive force patterns induced by time-varying flux linkage in the search coils and then adequate phase is excited for drive. The validity of the method is verified by experimental results.

  • A method for driving and position sensing of TSRM(Toroidal Switched Reluctance Motor) using the search coil is presented in this paper. Position information of the rotor is essential for SRM drives. The rotor position sensor such as an opto-interrupter or high performance encoder is generally used for the estimation of rotor position. However, these discrete position sensors not only add complexity and cost to the system but also tend to reduce the reliability of the drive system. In order to solve these problems, in the proposed method, rotor position detection is achieved using the voltage waveforms induced by the time varying flux linkage in the search coils, and then the appropriate phases are excited to drive the SRM. But the search coil EMF is generated only when the motor rotates. Therefore the rotor position sensing method at standstill is also suggested.

  • In this paper, a detection technique of initial rotor position at a standstill in Toroidal Switched Reluctance Motor(TSRM) with built-in interior central pole search coil is proposed. In case search coils are used as a position sensor, it has many advantages like low cost, decrease in the volume, high robust characteristics and wide applications. In this paper, a new detection method of initial rotor position is suggested using interior central pole search coil. The simulation and experiment for the proposed method and their results support the validity of the proposed scheme by verifying the operation of a 6/4 TSRM using search coils.
