  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve the positioning accuracy of TOA based indoor positioning system in NLOS environments. TOA based indoor positioning systems have been studied mostly considering LOS environments. However, it is almost impossible to maintain the LOS environments due to obstacles such as people, furniture, walls, and so on. The proposed method in this study compensates the range error caused by the NLOS environments. We confirmed that positioning accuracy of a proposed method is improved than conventional algorithms through simulation and field test.

  • The transient mass transfer in a single droplet system consisting of 1-octanol (continuous phase)/aqueous succinic acid solution (dispersed phase) was investigated in the presence of chemical reaction, which is acid/anion exchange reaction of succinic acid and tri-n-octylamine (TOA). This succinic acid extraction by TOA can be considered to occur at the interface between organic and aqueous phase, that is, heterogeneous reaction system. The basic properties of the system such as viscosity, density, distribution coefficient, terminal velocity of droplet, and diffusion coefficient were measured experimentally or calculated theoretically, and used for theoretical calculation of characteristic parameters of mass transfer later. The effects of succinic acid concentration on the terminal velocity was negligible in the existence of TOA, although the terminal velocity increases with succinic acid concentration in the absence of TOA. On the contrary, the terminal velocity decreases with TOA concentration. While droplets falls through organic phase, the trajectory of droplets is observed to oscillate around its vertical path. A mass trnasfer cell was prepared to monitor the mass transfer behavior in a single droplet and used to measure the mean concentration of succinic acid inside droplet. The results are expressed with dimensionless parameters. Under 50 g/L succinic acid condition, the system with 0.1 mol/kg TOA showed that the molar flux decreases in proportion to the decrease of concentration gradient, while in the case of 0.5 mol/kg TOA Sh increases rapidly with time indicating the molar flux of succinic acid decreases relatively slowly compared to the decrease in concentration gradient.

  • Recently Task Group (TG) 4 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.15a has been recommended a system with ranging capability in existence of multiple Simultaneous operating piconets (SOPs) as well as low-cost, low-power. According to the ranging service, coherent and non-coherent based ranging schemes using ternary code have been adopted as a standard. However it is hard to estimate an accurate time of arrival (TOA) in case of using direct sequence based TOA estimation method because pulse repetition interval (PRI) offered by TG is more limited than the maximum excess delay (MED) of channel. To mitigate inter pulse interference (IPI) problem, this paper proposes a non-coherent TOA estimation scheme using non-periodic transmission (NPT) pattern. The proposed receiver is based on a non-coherent energy detection considering with motivation of low rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN). TOA information is estimated via proper comparison with a prescribed threshold after the sliding correlation and search back window (SBW) process for reducing TOA error. To verify the performance of proposed ranging scheme, two distinct channel models approved by IEEE 802.15.4a TG are considered. According to the simulation results, we could conclude that the proposed scheme have performed better performance than the conventional method on the existence of multiple SOPs.

  • This letter proposes a non-coherent blind time-of-arrival (TOA) estimation scheme for impulse radio ultra-wideband systems. The TOA estimation is performed in two consecutive phases: the Rayleigh-quotient theorem-based coarse-signal acquisition (CSA) and the iterative-threshold-test-based fine time estimation (FTE). The proposed scheme serves in a blind manner without demanding any a priori knowledge of the channel and the noise. Analysis and simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly increases the signal detection probability in CSA and ameliorates the TOA estimation accuracy in FTE.

  • This paper addresses the problem of joint time of arrival (TOA) and direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in impulse radio ultra-wideband systems with a two-antenna receiver and links the joint estimation of TOA and DOA to the sparse representation framework. Exploiting this link, an orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is used for TOA estimation in the two antennas, and then the DOA parameters are estimated via the difference in the TOAs between the two antennas. The proposed algorithm can work well with a single measurement vector and can pair TOA and DOA parameters. Furthermore, it has better parameter-estimation performance than traditional propagator methods, such as, estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques algorithms matrix pencil algorithms, and other new joint-estimation schemes, with one single snapshot. The simulation results verify the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

  • The location of mobile terminals in cellular networks is an important problem in the field of information technology with applications in resource allocation, location sensitive browsing, and emergency communications. Finding location estimation techniques that are robust to non-line of light (NLOS) propagation is a key problem in this area. Time of arrival (TOA) and pattern matching (PM) measurements can be made simultaneously by CDMA cellular networks at low cost. The different sources of errors for each measurement type cause TOA and PM measurements to contain independent information about mobile station (MS) locations. This paper combines the information of PM and TOA measurements to calculate a superior location estimate. The proposed location estimator is robust, provides lower error than the estimators based on the individual measurements, and has low implementation costs.

  • In this paper, we present a novel and numerically efficient algorithm for high resolution TOA(Time Of Arrival) estimation under indoor radio propagation channels. The proposed algorithm is not dependent on the structure of receivers, i.e, it can be used with either coherent or non-coherent receivers. The TOA estimation algorithm is based on a high resolution frequency estimation algorithm of Minimum-norm. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm relies on numerical analysis techniques in computing signal or noise subspaces. The algorithm is based on the two step procedures, one for transforming input data to frequency domain data and the other for estimating the unknown TOA using the proposed efficient algorithm. The efficiency in number of operations over other algorithms is presented. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by means of computer simulations.. Throughout the analytic and computer simulation results, we show that the proposed algorithm exhibits superior performance in estimating TOA estimation with limited computational cost.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective time-of-arrival (TOA)-based localization method with adaptive bias computation in indoor environments. The goal of the localization is to estimate an accurate target's location in wireless localization system. However, in indoor environments, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) errors block the signal propagation between target device and base station. The NLOS errors have significant effects on ranging between two devices for wireless localization. In TOA-based localization, finding the target's location inside the overlapped area in the TOA-circles is difficult. We present an effective localization method using compensated distance with adaptive bias computation. The proposed method is possible for the target's location to estimate an accurate location in the overlapped area using the measured distances with subtracted adaptive bias. Through localization experiments in indoor environments, estimation error is reduced comparing to the conventional localization methods.

  • The Loran-C, a radio navigation system based on TDOA measurements is enhanced to eLoran using TOA measurements instead of TDOA measurements. Many error factors such as PF, SF, ASF, clock errors and unknown biases are included in eLoran TOA measurements. Because these error factors can cause failure in eLoran navigation algorithm, these errors must be compensated for high accuracy eLoran navigation results. Compensation of ASF and unknown biases are difficult to calculate, while the others such as PF and SF are relatively easy to eliminate. In order to compensate all errors in eLoran TOA measurements, a simple GPS aided bias compensation method is suggested in this paper. This method calculates the bias as the difference of TOA measurement and the range between eLoran transmitters and the receiver whose position is determined using GPS. The real data measured in Europe are used for verification of suggested method and navigation algorithm.

  • Succinic acid is of interested as the raw material of biodegradable polymer. In this study, succinic acid was separated by reactive extraction using amine extractants such as TOA (trioctylamine) and Aliquat 336. The extractability of TOA for succinic acid was higher than that of Aliquat 336. The distribution of succinic acid into organic phase was decreased with increasing pH in aqueous phase. However, the effect of pH on the extractability of Aliquat 336 was little. In the case of maleic acid which has similar structure to succinic acid, the extractability for maleic acid was higher than that for succinic acid. It was mainly due to the difficulty of deprotonation of second carboxylic group by intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
