  • Dystonia is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary and uncontrollable muscle tonus abnormalities. It is a huge burden not only to the patients and their families, but also to the field of medicine, in that there has hardly been any substantial change in the concept of and approach to this intractable disorder and therefore no breakthrough to its diagnosis, evaluation and treatment. As an effort to solve the current impasse, this review briefly summarizes the current concept, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and management, and then suggests a rather new therapeutic approach to this disorder, based on the concept of neurological balance and TMJ integrative approach. These new approaches will provide a platform for the clinicians and researchers to have a leap in the concept, diagnosis and therapeutics.

  • Applied Kinesiology (AK) is an evaluation system on the functional balance and integration of the body. Functional aspects of the triad of health are evaluated through muscle testing to see if the balance and integration is in an optimal status or is influenced by a given environmental stimulation. Triad of health refers to the structural, chemical, and psychological aspects of the body. Muscle testing in AK is a functional neurological assessment of muscular response to a given environmental stimulation in a given individual. Meridian system and stomatognathic system as in TMJ balancing medicine serve as one of the theoretical basis of AK. This article reviews core concepts of AK, discusses yin-yang balance medicine perspectives and clinical applications of it.

  • Objectives: Neurological examination on balance function is widely applied in clinical practice. Balance function may be clinically relevant to an assessment of yinyang balance in such therapies as temporomandibular joint balancing medicine. Fukuda stepping test is a relatively not-well-known method of balance function test. This study reviewed the procedures and criteria of Fukuda stepping test. Method: Recent articles on Fukuda stepping test were searched in public database (Pubmed, Proquest) and reviewed for its procedures and clinical implications. Results: Fukuda stepping test adopts 50 steps or 100 steps with subsequent assessment of the deviation or displacement of the subject. It may not be reliable during acute phase. Conclusion: Fukuda stepping test may be utilized and be further developed to assess balance function in the neurological management of functions.
