  • Objectives: This study is aimed to recognize the role of TMJ in Korean medicine basic theory and clinic, which is the foundation of human life sustaining. Methods: It was identified and confirmed the organic connection between TMJ and Korean medicine specially Meridian theory. Results: In Korean medicine be based policies to promote of Oriental Medicine Promotion Act, the therapy of TMJ balancing is one of the parts of Korean medicine treatment of technique. TMJ balancing performs a primary role to treat diseases in the brain and the cervical vertebrae. Conclusions: TMJ balancing medicine is the part of integrative medicine for systemic diseases treatment to be based on Korean medicine basic theory.

A Case of Cervical dystonia Treatment Using Yin-yang Balancing Therapy of Temporomandibular Joint (턱관절음양균형요법을 이용한 연축성 사경증 치험 1례)

  • This case is witten for presenting the effect of the TMJ balancing therapy using the TMJ balancing appliance which normalizes the yin and yang balance of the brain-nervous system including the Meridian system. The balancing appliance was used in patient with cervical dystonia, and clinical outcome measurements were performed through clinical observations in specific movement and actions. The patient displayed positive changes after the treatment and the effect was well-maintained during the treatment period. For the more precise evaluation, clinical and biological studies of temporomandibular balancing therapy (TBT) are needed.

  • Objectives: This case is to report the effect of TMJ balancing therapy (TBT) and combined Korean Medicine (CKM) on a 15-year-old male patient with suspected cervical dizziness of unknown causes. Methods: He was treated with TBT and CKM included Yin-yang Balancing Therapy of TMJ, pelvic balancing therapy, cervical chuna therapy once a week for 3 months. He continued to wear accurate balancing appliance (ABA) in the mouth, did 12-way cervical gravity straightening exercise and took banhabakchulchunma-tang-gamibang for 3 months. The effects of treatment was evaluated using the numerical rating scale (NRS). Results: After the treatments, dizziness was relieved from NRS 7 to NRS 1. Conclusions: This case report suggests that TBT and CKM treatments can relieve suspected cervical dizziness of unknown causes.

A Case Report of a Patient with Thalamus Cerebral Infarction Treated with TMJ Balancing Therapy and Traditional Korean Medicine (턱관절음양균형요법과 한방 치료를 적용한 시상 부위 뇌경색 환자에 대한 증례보고)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to report the effectiveness of TMJ balancing therapy and Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) treatments on a thalamus cerebral infarction patient with hemiparesis and gait disturbance. Methods: The patient was treated with TMJ balancing therapy, along with korean herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and physical therapy. The motor function was evaluated through the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), Grasp power and Functional Ambulatory Category (FAC). And the daily life ability was evaluated by the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) and Korean National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (K-NIHSS). Results: After 17 days of TMJ balancing therapy and TKM treatments, the score of MMT did not improved, but the score of FAC, K-MBI, K-NIHSS improved. Conclusions: This study suggested that TMJ balancing therapy and TKM treatments could be effective for hemiparesis and gait disturbance in patients with thalamus cerebral infarction.

  • Objectives: This study is aimed to recognize the therapy principles of TMJ balancing in Korean medicine. Methods: TMJ diseases in Donguibogam were discussed in the view of Korean medicine basic theory. Results: Manual therapy and fixed therapy using toolswere used for treatment in dislocating jaw by yawn or TMJ diseases in Korean medicine. Conclusions: In Donguibogam, manual therapy and fixed therapy were used for TMJ dislocating, and acupuncture therapy and herbal therapy were used in toothache by dependent on the cause and the symtoms.
