  • Various satellite sensors having ranges of the visible, infrared, and thermal wavelengths have been launched due to the improvement of hardware technologies of satellite sensors development. According to the development of satellite sensors with various wavelength ranges, the fusion and integration of multisensor images are proceeded. Image matching process is an essential step for the application of multisensor images. Some algorithms, such as SIFT and SURF, have been proposed to co-register satellite images. However, when the existing algorithms are applied to extract matching points between optical and thermal images, high accuracy of co-registration might not be guaranteed because these images have difference spectral and spatial characteristics. In this paper, location of control points in a reference image is extracted by SURF, and then, location of their corresponding pairs is estimated from the correlation of the local similarity. In the case of local similarity, phase correlation method, which is based on fourier transformation, is applied. In the experiments by simulated, Landsat-8, and ASTER datasets, the proposed algorithm could extract reliable matching points compared to the existing SURF-based method.

  • Because the satellite imagery can detect the radiative heat from the surface using the thermal IR (TIR) channel, there have been many efforts to verify the relationship between the land surface temperature (LST) and urban heat island. However, the relationship between geomorphological characteristics like surface aspects and LST is relatively less studied. Therefore, the geomorphological elements, for example, surface aspects and surface slopes, are considered to evaluate their effects on the change of the surface temperature distribution using the Landsat 7 ETM+ TIR channel and the possibility of the image to detect anthropogenic heat from the surface. We found that the surface aspect is ignorable but the surface slope with the sun elevation influences on the surface temperature distribution. Also, the radiative heat from the surface to the atmosphere could not be accurately recorded by the satellite image due to the surface slope but the slope correction process used in this study could correct the surface temperature under slope condition and the slope correction, in fact, was not influenced on the average temperature of the surface. The possibility of the anthropogenic heat detection from the surface from the satellite imagery was verified as well.

  • Precipitation evapotranspiration and runoff are three key parameters of regional water balance. Problems exist in the traditional methods for calculating such factors , such as explaining of the geographic rationality of spatial interpolating methods and lacking of enough observation stations in many important area for bad natural conditions. With the development of modern spatial info-techniques, new efficient shifts arose for traditional studies. Guided by theories on energy flow and materials exchange within Soil-Atmosphere-Plant Continuant (SPAC), retrieval models of key hydrological parameters were established in the Yellow River basin using CMS-5 and FengYun-2 meteorological satellite data. Precipitation and evapotranspiration were then estimated: (1) Estimating tile amount of solar energy that is absorbed by the ground with surface reflectivity, which is measured in the visible wavelength band (VIS): (2) Assessing the partitioning of the absorbed energy between sensible and latent heat with the surface temperature, which was measured in the thermal infrared band (TIR), the latent heat representing the evapotranspiration of water; (3) Clouds are identified and cloud top levels are classified using both VIS and TIR data. Hereafter precipitation will be calculated pixel by pixel with retrieval model. Daily results are first obtained, which are then processed to decade, monthly and yearly products. Precipitation model has been has been and tested with ground truth data; meanwhile, the evapotranspiration result has been verified with Large Aperture Scintillometry (LAS) presented by Wageningen University of the Netherlands. Further studies may concentrate on the application of models, i.e., establish a hydrological model of the Yellow river basin to make the accurate estimation of river volume and even monitor the whole hydrological progress.

  • During the year and a half of preparation for the Untnmed Ri Expedition (Caves $ Caving 29 p. 29) a lot of time was devoted developing the techniques we would use to explore the roaring wh waters of Nare. We finally left for New Britain with a whole new set caving rules and hardware which would not be out of place in an Indi Jones movie. The first serious work to tackle this new problem in caving wa pioneered by the French in 1978 after the discovery of the Nare. M and Kavakuna - all big river caves with flows of 15-20 cumes. We tir out these techniques on the white water rivers of north Wales. ma some improvements and tested some new ideas. This articles is a summary of our research and experience.

  • The goal of this study is to retrieve ASTER thermal radiometry using a radiative transfer model. The MODTRAN is used for the model because it is easy to use with high spatial resolution and it is possible to specify input parameters such as profiles of temperature, water vapor density, ozone, aerosols and any of the other gasses. Most of parameters such as temperature and water vapor profiles were obtained from the Terra MODIS. The selected ASTER scene images land and coastal area. The surface radiance of ASTER TIR bands were retrieved by MODTRAN and extracted atmospheric profiles from MOD07 and US standard 76 models. Radiance estimated using MOD07 data was systematically lower by about 0.5-1.0 $W/m^2$ sr ${\mu}m$ than that by US standard 76 model between the two cases.

  • This paper investigates the whirling, tilting and flying motion of a HDD spindle system supported by FDB experimentally. Experimental setup is built to measure the flying, whirling and tilting motion of the HDD spindle system, and three capacitance probes fixed on the xyz-micrometers measure the displacement of a HDD spindle system in the xyz-directions. This research shows that the tilting and whirling motion is mostly dependent on the centrifugal force and the gyroscopic moment due to the unbalanced mass of a HDD spindle. It also shows that the rotating HDD spindle starts to float to the equilibrium position in the z-direction until the weight of the rotating spindle is equal to the supporting pressure generated in the upper and lower thrust bearing.

  • We have designed a new TIR(Total Internal Reflection) structure for generating an LED lens which can produce a rectangular beam with small divergence angle in two perpendicular directions for an optical guidance system. The lens can control the divergence angle in the horizontal direction to be a small value of about $8^{\circ}$ with a $1mm{\times}1mm$ LED source, also in the vertical direction it can be about $7^{\circ}$, with optical collection efficiency higher than 0.83. After the lens is manufactured, the work demonstrates that the lens is suitable for an optical guidance system.
