Superduplex stainless steels are important materials to the oil and gas industry, especially for off-shore production. TIG welding of super duplex stainless steels to obtain the optimal phase balance between austenite and ferrite is mainly achieved by controlling the cooling rate and the weld chemistry. The latter depends on the filler wire chosen and the shielding gas used. If TIG welding of superduplex stainless steels is performed with argon shielding gas only, then nitrogen gets lost from the weld pool, which can result in a ferrite-rich weld metal, with an inferior corrosion resistance than parent metal. In the present study, nitrogen permeation model from the shield gas which gets into the weld metal in DCEN-TIG welding has suggested. This plasma stream model shows characteristics of permeation of nitrogen ions into the molten metal due to the strong physical effect of plasma stream which formed by the arc pressure rather than the permeation of nitrogen ions caused by electric effect.
TIG welding enables to produce high quality weldment. However it has some problems such as shallow penetration and large distortion due to low penetration aspect ratio after welding. In order to overcome those problems, there are many ongoing studies on A-TIG welding, which use active flux. In this study, the effect of arc length and shield gas on penetration aspect ratio with melt-run welding on STS 304 6t, on which active flux was spreaded, was investigated. Arc length was changed from 1mm to 3mm, and aspect ratio became higher as arc length was decreased in this range. 100% Ar gas, Ar-$H_2$ mixed gas, Ar-He mixed gas, and 100% He gas were used as shield gas in this study. When Ar-$H_2$ mixed gas, Ar-He mixed gas, and 100% He gas were applied, penetration and melting efficiency were both increased as compared with 100% Ar gas. Aspect ratio was the highest with Ar-2.5% $H_2$ mixed gas.
Welding is very popular method for joining two or more metals. However, welding causes residual stress and distortion and these give a bad influence to the structure strength. In this paper, TIG welding technique was performed to investigate the joint characteristics of AISI321 steel. For its evaluation, the orthogonal array method and variance analysis were applied with three factors of electric current, travel speed and argon gas and also three levels of each factor to tensile tests for optimum design. From the results, the increaser weld speed the narrower bead width and the lower weld penetration. The increaser electric current the brighter argon gas and the wider bead width. Also weld speed influenced most on the tensile strength and presumption range of tensile strength at optimal condition from reliability 95% was estimated to $635.02{\pm}14.64$. In addition the increaser weld speed and electric current the fracture occurred around bead vicinity.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the exposure to ozone and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) generated during welding work at a shipyard and recommend respiratory protective equipment(RPE) adequate against these hazards. Method: Ozone was collected for about 30 minutes at two-minutes intervals using a direct reading instrument, specifically an ozone analyzer(Serinus 10, Ecotech, Australia). TVOCs were collected for about 30 minutes at three-minute intervals using a portable GC (Alpha 115, Synspec BV, the Netherlands), and were determined simultaneously by area sampling at the welding plume closest to the welder's breathing zone. The total measurements were 162 for ozone($CO_2$ welding 47, TIG 60, stick 55), and 136 for TVOCs($CO_2$ 65, TIG 50, stick 21). Based on these measurements, a literature survey was conducted to assess the adequacy of RPE. Results: Relative to Korean OEL, measurements above STEL 0.2 ppm were 23.4% for $CO_2$, 63.3% for TIG and 14.5% for stick welding. There were significant differences(p=<0.0001) among welding types. Compared with ACGIH peak exposure of 0.4 ppm for ozone, which is not applied in Korea, $CO_2$ welding exceeded it by 10.6%, TIG by 40.0% and stick by 7.3%. Although it was not feasible to compare them directly since there are no Korean OEL, TVOCs had very high levels similar to the concentrations before moving into a new apartment and about 10-20 times the indoor air quality recommendations for some individual measurements. Conclusions: As ozone removal RPE has been recommended in welding environments for a long time(Lunau, 1967), this fact was demonstrated based on the results of the on-site work environment measurements(ozone and TVOCs). In conclusion, for all welding at a shipyard, gas/vapor and particulate combination RPE are recommended. If this is not possible, it should at least be present for TIG welding.
The effects of TIG welding and post-treatment procedures on the microstructure and the pitting corrosion resistance of welded lean duplex stainless steel S82441 were investigated. Autogenous TIG welding was used with different amounts of heat input and shielding gases such as Ar, and mixtures of $Ar-N_2$ and Ar-He. The addition of 5% to 15% of nitrogen to argon practically did not affect the level of the pitting corrosion resistance. However, the application of gas mixtures (50% Ar + 50% He) resulted in a significant decrease in pitting corrosion resistance. We found that increased current (200 A and 250 A) led to lower values of CPT of welds compared with welds obtained with 50 A, 100 A and 150 A. In addition, the removal of the weld surface layer (0.2 ~ 0.3 mm thickness) in most cases not only resulted in a significant increase in resistance to the pitting corrosion but also post-treatment of weld, implying that corrosion resistance depended on factors such as surface roughness or the presence of undesirable oxides.
Three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed to study the temperature distribution phenomenon of TIG assisted friction stir welding (TAFSW) between dissimilar plates (Al 6061-T6 and stainless steel 304). TAFSW is a solid-state welding process that integrates TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) into a friction stir welding (FSW), to preheat the harder material ahead of FSW tool during welding. In order to facilitate the industrial application of welding, 3D numerical modeling of heat transfer has been carried out applying Finite Element Method (FEM). The temperature distribution due to heat generation during TAFSW on dissimilar materials joint is analysed using in-house solver. Moving heat source along with frictional heat between the work specimens and tool surface is considered to calculate the heat input. The analytical model used predicts successfully the maximum welding temperatures that occur on the dissimilar materials during TAFSW. Comparison with the infra red camera and thermocouple measurement results shows that the results from the current numerical simulation have good agreement with the measured data.

The purpose of this study is to examine the improvement of endurance exercise performance by taking mixtures of Ginseng Radix rubra and Paeonia Radix. For this purpose, time of exhaustion, $V0_2max$, heart rate, and blood lactate was used as improvement index. The experiments were executed to thirty eight men in their twenties. They were randomly assigned into four groups[CG: control group(n=10), IG: ingestion mixtures group(n=9), TPG: ingestion placebo+training group(n=9), TIG: ingestion mixtures+training group(n=10)]. IG and TIG took mixtures of Ginseng Radix rubra and Paeonia Radix for four weeks, and TPG and TIG exercised once a day, three times a week, exercised for 25 minutes during the first week and added 2 minutes by week during four weeks up to 75% of their maximum heart rate. Time of exhaustion showed statistically significant increase for IG, TPG and TIG. TIG had the longest time of exhaustion and IG the shortest. In case of $VO_2max$, no statistically significant change was found among four groups. However, IG, TPG, TIG showed small increase in $VO_2max$. Similarly, no significant change was found for heart rate in rest even though TIG and TPG appear to have decreasing trend. For maximum heart rate, no significant change was found either, but IG, TPG and TIG showed increase. In case of blood lactate from rest to exercise until 18 minutes, no group had significant decrease. In case of blood lactate in exhaustion, IG, TPG and TIG had significant increase. Blood lactate recovery volume at 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes showed no significant results for all four groups, but TIG and TPG had a small increase.

The crevice corrosion behavior on austenitic AISI 304 and 316L stainless steel welded by TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and SMA was studied. The results are as follows : In 10% $FeCl_3$ solution and natural sea water sampled near Mokpo port, the base metal of 304 stainless steel showed small amount corrosion, whereas 316L stainless steel did not showed any corrosion in the test periods. The weight loss caused by crevice corrosion increased with increasing weld heat input and residual .delta. ferrite formed in welded part. The corrosion resistance of the welded part was in the order of TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and SMA. From this tendency, it is proved that the smaller heat input gives the better corrosion resistance.
Weld repair of ASTM A-470 class 8 high pressure (HP) steam turbine rotor steel has been performed to extend the service life of older fossil units. Microhardness measurements were conducted across the weldment from unaffected base metal (BM) to weld metal (WM). The hardness of the BM was VHN 253, however it dropped up to VHN 227 at the heat affected zone (HAZ) close to unaffected BM for multipass SAW. This area of hardness drop is called "siftening zone" and has a width of 0.5-0.6mm. During creep rupture test, failure occurred around the softening zone and rupture time was 772.4hr at 19Ksi (132 Mpa) and 593.deg. C. Multipass MIG and TIG welding have been employed to reduce the softening zone width. The softening zone width for MIG was 0.3-0.4mm and for TIG was zero-0.4mm depending on heat inputs. However creep rupture time was decreased as softening zone width reduced. Creep rupture time also showed a close relationship with heat inputs in TIG process. The higher heat input, the longer rupture time. Most failure occurred at intercritical HAZ (ICHAZ), however rupture location was shifted to coarse grained HAZ (CGHAZ) as heat input decreased. The rupture surface showed tearing and dimple which indicated transgranular fracture. fracture.

Bead shape control with gas force process has been developed to overcome the concave back bead in pipe orbital welding. However, It is impossible to make a convex back bead using the existing gas nozzle, because it has high gas-consuming and low gas force. The purpose of this paper, to develop optimum shape of nozzle which to reduce the consumption of gas, maximizing the shield gas force with low cost and high productivity coincide the Green welding. In this paper venturi-type nozzle was compared with existing CP-type nozzle by TIG pulse welding in overhead position. As a result, CP-type occurs the wormholes in the overhead position, but the Venturi-type without the pore and formed a good bead appearance.
