  • This study was designed to investige the effects of Houttuynia cordata Thunb mixture extract on the lipid metabolism in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced liver damage of rats. LPS-treatment increased the levels of total-lipid, LDH (lactate, dehydrogenas), triglyceride (TG) and malondialdehyde (MDA). But Houttuynia cordata Thunb mixture extract (HM) pretreatment decreased the levels of total lipid, LDL-cholesterol, TG and MDA. Also LPS-treatment decreased total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol, but HM-pretreatment increased both of them. These results demonstrated that HM-pretreatment had the preventive effects against the dyfunction of lipid metabolism in the LPS-induced liver damage of rats.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest that selecting method of rotifer with high activity of digestive enzymes for the enrichment effect of rotifer and the increasing of digestive enzymes of fish larvae. the populations assayed the activities of the digestive enzymes were randomly selected out of several population communities cultured with freshwater condensed Chlorella. The relationship with the population density and the growth rate of selected populations was shown to RD=5865 SGR-350.08(P<0.001). The relationships with fecundity of the growth rate and the population density were shown to F=-36.147 SGR+61.652(P<0.05) and F=-0.0085 RD+66.38(P<0.001), respectively. The relationships of the growth rate and the individual activities of digestive enzymes in rotifer were assayed to Amyl=-1.6482 SGR+3.2498(P<0.05), TAP=-0.8115 SGR+1.1361(P<0.001) and TGL+0.0055 SGR+0.0079(P=0.239), respectively. But in TG-lipase was not related significantly with the growth rate. Also the relationships of the fecundity and the individual activities of digestive enzymes in rotifer were shown to Amyl=0.0296 F+1.0981(P<0.001), TAP=0.0252 F+0.0975(P<0.001) and TGL=-6E-06 F+0.0113(P=0.915), respectively. But in TG-lipase was not related significantly with the fecundity. And the relationships with the specific activity of TG-lipase of the fecundity, the growth rate and the population density were TGL=-0.024 F+0.2332(P=0.132), TGL=0.1267 SGR+0.005(P<0.01) and TGL=0.0002 F-0.0594(P<0.001), respectively. In this case, specific activity of TG-lipase was shown the significant relationship with the population density and the growth rate, but it was not related significantly with fecundity. Therefore, Because a population shown the high activity of digestive enzymes for increasing a lipid enrichment effect of a rotifers and receiving the many exogenous digestive enzymes to fish larvae was the population of high fecundity than the population of high rotifer density, to select the population of a high fecundity was suggested to benefit than a high growth rate for fish larvae.

  • Ten college women were divided into 5 groups and treated in randomized block design for 5 weeks with 1 interval between treatments and subjects serving as their own controls. The experimental diets were corn oil diet as a source of n-6 linoleic acid, perilla oil diet as a source of n-3 $\alpha$-linolenic acid, and fish oil diet as a source of n-3 EPA and DHA. Dietary fat was supplied at 30% Cal and modified to give the total amount of saturated fatty acids and monoenoic acids at constant level. There was no significant effect on serum cholesterol level by different PUFA. However, on a gram-for-gram basis, there was a trend that the decrease in serum cholesterol was proportionate to the degree of fat unsaturation. On the other hand, only fish oil diet significantly decreased TG level but no significant effect on the relative proportion of TG in VLDL. The degree of hypotriglyceridemia did not corrleate with the degree of unsaturation. The relative proportion of CE in LDL was reduced by all PUFA diets but significant only by perilla oil diet. The relative amount of apoprotein in LDL was significantly reduced by n-3 PUFA. HDL-Chol content was significantly increased only in fish oil diet but no change in the relative proportion of its chemical components of HDL.

  • The principal objective of this study was to assess the effects of chitosan oligosaccharide supplementation on the improvement of blood glucose, lipid components and enzyme activities in the serum of streptozotocin(STZ, 55 mg/kg B.W., I.P. injection)-induced hyperglycemic rats fed on experimental diets for 5 weeks. The concentrations of blood glucose, total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-cholesterol, free cholesterol, cholesteryl ester ratio, triglycerides(TG) and phospholipids(PL) in serum were remarkably higher in the hyperglycemic group(group BSW) and STZ(I.P.)+chitosan oligosaccharide supplementation group(group ECW) than those in the control group(group BW, basal diet+water). However the concentrations of blood glucose, total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-cholesterol, tree cholesterol, cholesteryl ester ratio, TG and PL in serum were lower in the ECW group than in the BSW group, whereas the ratio of HDL-cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentration in the ECW group were higher than in the BSW group. The activities of alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and aminotransferase(AST, ALT) in serum were lower in the ECW group than in the hyperglycemic BSW group. The results shown above suggested that chitosan oligosaccharide supplementation effectively improves blood glucose, lipid composition and enzyme activities in the sera of STZ-induced hyperglycemic rats.

  • In order to inspect the danger of forest fires, the thermal characteristics and the ignitability of the dead leaves and the living leaves for the main species of trees in Youngdong areas have been studied by the TG/DTA and the group flammability tester. From this work, the thermal delay has been increased with the increase of the heating rate. The fractions of the thermal weight loss for the dead leaves and the living leaves of the coniferous trees were higher than those of the broadleaf trees. Also, it was confirmed that the ignitable dangers of the dead leaves and the coniferous trees were higher than those of the living leaves and the broadleaf trees, due to the low auto ignition temperature and thermal resistance.

  • Effects of methanol extract from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) (CME) on underlying mechanisms of lipolysis were investigated in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Compared to the control, lipid accumulation with 72 hr treatment of CME at the concentration $20\;{\mu}g/mL$ was significantly decreased by 19.9% as quantified by Oil red O dye. Intracellular triglyceride (TG) content was also lowered by 19.3%. To determine the mechanism for TG content reduction, glycerol release level was measured. Incubation of 3T3-L1 adipocytes with 15 and $20\;{\mu}g/mL$ of CME significantly elevated the level of free glycerol released into the cultured medium by 20.4 and 28.6%, respectively. In subsequent measurements using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), mRNA levels of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) were significantly increased by 21.2 and 24.9%, respectively, at the concentration $20\;{\mu}g/mL$. Results indicated that CME stimulated lipolysis through induction of HSL and ATGL mRNA expressions, resulting in increased glycerol release.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oligosaccharides(fructo or isomalto ) contained in sponge cake on blood lipids and intestinal physiology in rats. The experimental diet was mixed with 30% sponge cakes. Normal male Sprague Dawley rats weighing about 530g were randomly assigned to three groups and placed experimental diets and deionized water at free access for 25 days. Rat in control group received a diet mixed with sponge cake containing sucrose only at 21.58g/100g diet and rats in the other two groups received diets mixed with sponge cakes of which 40% sucrose was replaced with each oligosaccharide. The results obtained were as follows: No significant differences in efficiency of food, liver weight and intestinal length were observed among groups. The cecal contents and cecal wall weights were increased more in fructooligosaccharide(FO) group than control. The pH of cecal contents decreased significantly in two oligosaccharide groups. The water contents of fresh feces in FO group were the highest and the those of two oligosaccharide groups were higher than that of control. Dry fecal weight increased significantly in isomaltooligosaccharide(IMO) group. Total serum cholesterol concentration was significantly lower in FO group. Serum triglyceride(TG) was not significantly different among three groups at p<0.05, but serum TG of FO group was lower than those of other groups. In conclusion, 40% replacement of sucrose with oligosaccharides in sponge cake may have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism and intestinal function in rats.

  • Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of yeast with bacteriocin and Lactobacillus cultures (mixture of Lactobacillus agilis BCRC 10436 and Lactobacillus reuteri BCRC 17476) supplements, alone or in combination, on broiler chicken performance. Methods: A total of 300, 1-d-old healthy broiler chickens were randomly divided into five treatment groups: i) basal diet (control), ii) basal diet+0.25% yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (YC), iii) basal diet+0.25% yeast with bacteriocin (BA), iv) basal diet+Lactobacillus cultures (LAB), and v) basal diet +0.25% yeast with bacteriocin+Lactobacillus cultures (BA+LAB). Growth performance, cecal microbiota, cecal fermentation products, and blood biochemistry parameters were determined when chickens were 21 and 35 d old. Results: The supplementation of YC, BA, and BA+LAB resulted in a significantly better feed conversion rate (FCR) than that of the control group during 1 to 21 d (p<0.05). The LAB supplementation had a significant effect on the presence of Lactobacillus in the ceca at 35 d. None of the supplements had an effect on relative numbers of L. agilis and L. reuter at 21 d, but the BA supplementation resulted in the decrease of both Lactobacillus strains at 35 d. The BA+LAB supplementation resulted in higher short chain fatty acid (SCFA) in the ceca, but LAB supplementation significantly decreased the SCFA at 35 d (p<0.05). All treatments tended to decrease ammonia concentration in the ceca at 21 d, especially in the LAB treatment group. The BA supplementation alone decreased the triacylglycerol (TG) concentration significantly at 21 d (p<0.05), but the synergistic effect of BA and LAB supplementation was required to reduce the TG concentration at 35 d. The YC supplementation tended to increase the plasma cholesterol at 21 d and 35 d. However, the BA supplementation significantly decreased the cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol level at 35 d. In conclusion, the BA+LAB supplementation was beneficial to body weight gain and FCR of broiler chickens. Conclusion: The effect of BA and LAB supplementation may be a result of the growth of lactic acid bacteria enhancement and physiological characterization of bacteriocin, and it suggests that the BA and LAB supplementation level or Lactobacillus strain selection should be integrated in future supplementation designs.

  • Several studies have suggested associations between MDM2 (mouse double minute 2 homolog) polymorphisms and leukemia risk, but they reported contradictory results. For better understanding of the effect of MDM2 T309G polymorphism on leukemia risk, we performed a meta-analysis. All eligible studies were identified through a search of PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM) databases before May 2014. Assessment of associations between the MDM2 T309G polymorphism and leukemia risk was conducted by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Finally, a total of 11 publications covering 12 case-control studies with 2, 362 cases and 5, 562 controls concerning MDM2 T309G polymorphism with respect to leukemia were included in the meta-analysis. Significant associations were found between MDM2 T309G polymorphism and leukemia risk in four models in overall populations (G vs T: OR=1.29, 95% CI=1.11-1.49, p=0.001; GG vs TT: OR=1.67, 95% CI=1.21-2.30, p=0.002; GG vs TG/TT: OR=1.56, 95% CI=1.21-2.00, p=0.001; GG/TG vs TT: OR=1.28, 95% CI=1.05-1.57, p=0.015). In the sub-group analysis according to ethnicity, increased leukemia risks were observed in three genetic models among Asians but not Caucasians. In conclusion, the results of our meta-analysis suggest that the MDM2 T309G polymorphism can increase the risk of leukemia, especially among Asian populations.
