In this study, ethanolic extracts from Hericium erinaceum cultivated with Artemisia capillaris (HEAC) were assessed for their ability to lower the cholesterol levels of male Sprague-Dawley rats fed a high-fat diet. Rats were randomly subdivided into seven test groups. Each group contained eight rats fed a high-fat diet during a growth period lasting 4 wk. Supplementation with the extracts was performed once a day for 2 wk after the high-fat diet. The control group (rats fed a high-fat diet) showed a high efficiency ratio (feed efficiency ratio) value compared to the normal group. Biochemical parameters, including total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), and triglyceride (TG) levels dramatically increased in the control group compared to the normal group. High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) content in the control group was also significantly lower relative to the normal group. Two positive control groups, treated with simvastatin and atorvastatin, had lowered TC, LDL-c, and TG levels, and increased HDL-c content compared to the control group. Treatment with the tested extracts, including HEAC, ethanolic extracts from Hericium erinaceum, and ethanolic extracts from Artemisia capillaris reduced TC, LDL-c, and TG levels and elevated HDL-c content in the hyperlipidemia rats. The atherogenic index and cardiac risk factor values for the HEAC-treated group were 0.95 and 1.95, respectively. Simvastatin- and atorvastatin-treated groups showed atherogenic index values of 1.56 and 1.69, respectively, and cardiac risk factor values of 2.56 and 2.69, respectively. These results show HEAC possesses an ability to cure hyperlipidemia in rats and may serve as an effective natural medicine for treating hyperlipidemia in humans.
The purpose of this study was to examine nutrient intakes, food and daily habits, and serum lipids for female college students. The subjects consisted of 70 female college students aged 20 to 29 years old. Their dietary intakes were assessed by means of 24 hour dietary recall method. Food models and other measuring tools were also used. Concentrations of serum lipids were measured. The energy intake of the subjects averaged 1837Kcal, whereas the expended energy was 1871Kcal. The subjects consumed 310g of carbohydrates, 66g protien, 37g lipid, 14mg iron, 586mg calcium, 513R.E. vitamin A, 1.0mg vitamin B1, 1.3mg vitamin B2 1.5mg niacin, and 69mg vitamin C, respectively. Vitamin A and iron intakes were lower than the RDA. The percentages of total calorie from carbohydrate, fat, and protein were 67%, 18%, 14%, showing desirable calorie construction. The mean serum triglyceride(TG), cholesterol (Chol), HDL-Chol and LDC-Chol concentrations were 72.4mg/dl, 161.3mg/dl, 44.5mg/dl, and 102.3mg/dl, respectively. All of these values seem to fall in the desirable range. There were positive correlations between serum Chol and HDL-Chol or LDL-Chol or TG ; negative correlations between serum Chol and HDL-Chol/LDL-Chol ratio, between serum TG and HDL-Chol or HDL-Chol/LDC-Chol ratio.
The purpose of this study was designed to observe the effects of the feeding Cynanchum wilfordii extract on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid components in the serum of dietary hyperlipidemic and streptozotocin(STZ) -induced diabetic rats(S.D. strain, ♂) fed the experimental diets for 5 weeks. Concentrations of total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-Cholesterol, free-cholesterol. cholesteryl ester, TG, PL and blood glucose in serum were significantly higher in the cholesterol administration groups((group 2(cholesterol+water), 4(cholesterol+Cynanchum WIlfordii 3.5g% extract)) than those in the control group (group1 , basal diet+water). But the concentrations of total cholesterol. atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL- cholesterol. free-cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, TG, PL and blood glucose in serum were remakably lower in the group 4 than those in the group 2. In the STZ(55mg/kg B.W.)-induced diabetic groups((group 3(STZ, IP.)+water), 5(STZ(IP.)+Cynanchum WIlfordii 3.5g% extract? the serum total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-cholesterol, free-cholesterol. cholesteryl ester, TG, PL and blood glucose concentrations actions were rather lower in the group 5 than those in the group 3. In the ratio of HDL -cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentration, Cynanchum wilfordii extract administration groups were higher percentage than III the groups 2 and 3. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) in serum were rather lower in the Cynanchum wllfordii extract administration groups (group 4,5) than in the cholesterol diet group(group 2) and STZ-induced diabetic group (group 3). From the above research, the physiological activity substances in Cynanchum wllfordii were effective on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid compositions in serum of dietary hyperlipidemic and STZ-induced diabetic rats. And particularly, physiological activity substance in Cynanchum wilfordii was more effective therapeutic regimen for the control of metabolic derangements in adult disease.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: An imbalanced adipokine profile in obesity increases the susceptibility to obesity-related cardiometabolic alterations, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The mulberry plant has been reported to have health benefits, such as hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective effects. This study examined the effects of a mulberry (Morus alba L.) fruit ethanol extract (MBEE) on dyslipidemia, liver steatosis, and adipokine imbalance in response to a high-fat diet. MATERIALS/METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to one of 4 groups containing 6 rats each and fed either a control diet (CON), a high-fat diet (HFD), or a high-fat diet with MBEE of 150 mg/kg/day (LMB) or 300 mg/kg/day (HMB). The triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were measured spectrophotometrically. The leptin, adiponectin, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The plasma TG levels were similar in the 4 groups. Plasma cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and TC/HDL-C ratio increased in the HFD group compared with the CON group, whereas those values decreased in the LMB group (P < 0.05), indicating that MBEE had a plasma lipid-lowering effect. HDL-C decreased in the HFD group, but MBEE did not affect the HDL-C level. The HFD rats significantly increased hepatic TG and cholesterol levels and plasma ALT and AST activities compared to the CON group. The hepatic TG level and ALT and AST activities were reduced markedly by the MBEE treatment. The HFD group showed a higher PAI-1 level, whereas MBEE treatment, especially in the HMB group, significantly reduced leptin level, and leptin/adiponectin and PAI-1/ adiponectin ratios. These findings suggest that MBEE altered the imbalance between the pro-and anti-inflammatory adipokines to a more anti-inflammatory state. CONCLUSIONS: MBEE could protect against abnormal lipid metabolism and hepatic steatosis induced by a high-fat diet, lowering plasma cholesterol, LDL-C and TC/HDL-C, and hepatic TG. These findings are associated with the regulating effect of MBEE on the leptin/adiponectin and PAI-1/adiponectin ratios.
Purpose: Dysregulation of adipokines caused by excess adipose tissue has been implicated in the development of obesity-related metabolic diseases. This study evaluated the effects of mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pampanini) ethanol extract on lipid metabolic changes, insulin resistance, adipokine balance, and body fat reduction in obese rats. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a control diet (NC), high-fat diet (HF, 40% kcal from fat), or high-fat diet with 1% mugwort extract (HFM) for 6 weeks. Results: Epididymal and retroperitoneal fat mass increased in the HF group compared with the NC group, and epididymal fat mass was reduced in the HFM group (p < 0.05). No difference was observed in serum levels of total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) among the groups. However, triglyceride (TG), TG/HDL-C ratio, and TC/HDL-C ratio increased in the HF group and significantly decreased in the HFM group. TG and TC levels in the liver were significantly higher in the HF group, whereas these levels were significantly reduced in the HFM group. HF rats had lower insulin sensitivity as indicated by increased homeostasis model assessment of the insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) value. HOMA-IR values significantly decreased in the HFM group. Adiponectin levels were higher in NC rats, and their leptin and PAI-1 levels were lower. Relative balance of adipokines was reversed in the HF group, with lower adiponectin levels but higher leptin and PAI-1 levels. In contrast, the HFM group maintained balance of adiponectin/leptin and adiponectin/PAI-1 levels similar to NC by reducing leptin and PAI-1 levels. Conclusion: Overall data indicated that mugwort extract can be effective in alleviating metabolic dislipidemia, insulin resistance, and adipokine dysregulation induced by a high-fat diet.
Apo E polymorphism (e2, e3, e4) was among the first reported genetic polymorphism that explained part of the normal variation in plasma cholesterol concentrations. Both alleles E2 and E4 are significantly more frequent in patients with mixed forms of hyperlipidemia and contribute on the observed differences in CHD risk among different populations. Effects of apo E polymorphism on the distribution of plasma lipid profiles were studied in 105 normolipidemic healthy women. The relative frequencies of common alleles for gene locus of apo E in this study were that E3 allele was 0.848, E4 allels was 0.087, and E2 allele was 0.067. SBP and DBP were slightly more elevated in E2 allele than those in E3 and E4. The pulsation was also significantly (p<0.016) increased by E2 allele with excess body fat % in E2 allele. There were no differences in total-, total HDL-, VLDL+LDL-, VLDL- and LDL cholesterol among the apo E alleles. However, apo E2 allele subject had lower level of total HDL and HDL2 cholesterol (P<0.047) and significantly higher lev디 of HDL3 cholesterol (P<0.05) than those in apo E3 and E4 allele subject. The conclusion is that first, it seems that apo E4-mediated alteration through LDL B/E receptors or E receptors in cholesterol metabolism results in lower plasma TG or remanate particles and in higher levels of VLDL+LDL or LDL. Second, apo E2 allele shows reciprocal effects of E4 on the plasma lipid metabolism, respecitvely. Third, apo E2 allele was more atherogenic than apo E4 because the higher levels of HDL3/HDL2 ratio and atherogenic index[(TC-HDL)/HDL]were criticized.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of supplementation of fish oil on serum lipid in young healthy females. Eighteen female college students were divided into 3 groups. Each group fed a typical Korean diet supplemented with 15g, 12g and 9g of fish oil respectively for 1 week. Blood samples were obtained 4 times before supplementation, immediatly after supplementation, 1 week after stopping supplementation and 3 week after stopping supplementation. After 6 week break, the doses of fish oil were interchanged among 3 groups and the experiment was repeated to reduce interindivisual variation. The level of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol, low density lipoprotein(LDL)-cholesterol in the serum samples were determined immediately after stopping supplementation and then the value compared with those of the before supplementation period. The results obtained are summarised as follows; The serum TC levels decreased significatly(p<0.01) immediately after supplementation of fish oil and 1 week after stopping supplementation. The serum TG levels also decreased significantly(p<0.05) immediately after supplementation of fish oil. The HDL-cholesterol levels increased significantly(p<0.05) at 2 week and 3 weeks after stopping supplementation of fish oil in the 12g and the 15g supplementation groups. The LDL-cholesterol levels decreased significantly(p<0.05) immediately after and 1 week after stopping supplementation of fish oil. The ratio of HDL-C to TC increased significantly(p<0.01) and the ratio of LDL-C to HDL-C, and index of artherogenesity, decreased significantly(p<0.05).
The cholesterol-lowering effect of a fermented milk was studied for long-term period (56 weeks) in 206 Korean adults (106 normal cholesterol group and 100 hypercholesterol group) 300 $m\ell$ of the fermented milk was taken daily to all subjects for 10 weeks. 24 subjects drinking the fermented milk for 56 weeks and 42 subjects no-drinking for 40 weeks and then re-drinking from 50 th week for 6 weeks were followed up. Paired t-test, Duncan's multiple range test, and GLM repeated measure were used for statistical analysis. The level of total blood cholesterol and LDL after drinking the fermented milk for 10 weeks were decreased significantly in both group and affected by total cholesterol level at baseline, BMI, smoking and drinking. there is no significant change in triglyceride, HDL, and LDL/HDL ratio by drinking the fermented milk. The fermented milk intake for long-term period (56 weeks) did not show any more effect after 10 week on the level of TC, TG, HDL, LDL.

Objective: Growing evidence suggests that increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is associated with female infertility caused by conditions such as polycystic ovarian disease, obesity, thyroid dysfunction, and endometriosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether any relationship exists between CVD and unexplained infertility. Methods: Sixty-five women with unexplained infertility and 65 fertile controls were enrolled in the study. CVD risk markers such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), insulin resistance (defined by the homeostasis model assessment ratio), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were assessed. Results: TG, TC, LDL, and hs-CRP levels were higher and HDL levels were lower in patients with unexplained infertility than in fertile controls (p<0.05 for all). Positive associations were found between unexplained infertility and TG, TC, LDL, and hs-CRP levels, and a negative correlation was found for HDL (p<0.05 for all). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that TG, HDL, and hs-CRP were independent variables associated with unexplained infertility. Conclusion: Our study showed that women with unexplained infertility had an atherogenic lipid profile and elevated hs-CRP levels, suggesting a higher risk of developing CVD in the future. Further studies with larger groups are needed to investigate the nature of this link.

The purpose of this case-control study was done to examine the relationship among the cerebral infarction, blood lipids and homocysteine. We compared the components of blood lipids and homocysteine between cerebral infarction patients group (n=127) and controls group (n=158). We performed Pearson's chi-square test and Student's t-test for univariate analysis, Binary logistic regression for multivariate analysis to evaluate risk factors of cerebral infarction and Pearson's correlation analysis to investigate correlation between blood lipids and homocysteine. The results were as follows. The blood levels of High density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-Chol) and Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-Chol) were significantly lower in patients group, while age, the blood levels of Triglyceride(TG) and homocysteine were significantly higher in patients group. Hypertension had a 4.62 odds ratio, $TG{\geq}150\;mg/d{\ell}$ had a 2.33 odds ratio, HDL-Chol ${\leq}40\;mg/d{\ell}$ had a 6.85 odds ratio, but sex, DM, T-Chol, LDL-Chol had no direct relationship with odds ratio(non significant). In addition, among T-Chol and TG , HDL-Chol, LDL-Chol, they had positive correlation each other. Between TG and HDL-Chol had negative correlation each other. Homocysteine was not correlated with blood lipids adjusted for age and sex. These results suggest that low HDL-Chol and high TG may be risk factor of cerebral infarction. The correlation between homocysteine and blood lipids was not proven.y urther reserch on the subject is needed.
