  • The study on terrain referenced navigation has been proceeded from 1940s in advanced country with the object of military. In this study, the analysis regarding algorithm developed using cross-correlation matching algorithm and extended Kalman filter and simulation will be introduced. As a result, the standard deviation of position error from cross-correlation matching algorithm has been calculated 34.3m. It meant that the result has stable accuracy on the navigation. However, further study on terrain referenced navigation based on analysis of various topographic characteristics should be performed.

  • In this study, subject areas with different topographic feature were selected for the purpose of measuring the slope terrain by setting Terrestrial LiDAR in different places. And the slope terrain was analyzed based on three-dimensional raw data obtained through the measurement of slope terrain. With DEM data obtained from five measurement instances with 5mm of scan interval by setting Terrestrial LiDAR on the site 30m away straight from the slope terrain consisting of asphalt, rock, soil, and plants, the slope terrain was analyzed according to topographic feature. In addition, in consideration of changes in setting location that might affect the measured result, this study reviewed the accuracy of measured data obtained from different measurement areas.

  • To study the trafficability on soft and cohesive benthic terrain, a soil bin is designed and constructed. The information of shear strength of pacific seafloor and the results of dimensional analysis of vehicle-train system are used as basic datum for concept design of soil bin. Cohesive benthic terrain is modeled by means of bentonite-water mixture. The shear strength of the mixture is measured by motorized shear meter. Several facilities are constructed for mixing and evening modeled soil, transporting vehicle model. The shear strength in soil bin is investigated for depth, age and velocity. The result of this study is used as basic information to the experiment, study for development of crawler on benthic terrain.

  • In this study, a digital terrain analysis had been performed for a mountainous watershed having wetlands. In order to consider the impact for wetland in the flow determination algorithm, the Laplace equation is implemented into the upslope accounting algorithm of wetness computation scheme. The computational algorithm of wetland to spatial contribution of downslope area and wetness was also developed to evaluate spatially distributed runoff due to the presence of wetland. Developed schemes were applied to Wangpichun watershed located Chuncuk mountain at Ulzingun, South Korea. Both spatial distribution of wetness and its histogram indicate that the developed scheme provides feasible consideration of wetland impact in spatial hydrologic analysis. The impact of wetland to downslope propagation pattern is also useful to evaluate spatially distributed runoff distribution.

  • Recently, the development and application of unmaned robots are increasing in various fields including surveillance and reconnaissance, planet exploration and disaster relief. Unmaned robots are usually controlled from distance using radio communications but they should be equipped with autonomous travelling function to cope with unexpected terrains and obstacles. This means that unmanned robots should be able to evaluate terrain's characteristics quantitatively using mounted sensors so as to traverse harsh natural terrains autonomously. For this purpose, this paper presents an algorithm for extracting terrain information from elevation maps as an early step of traversability analysis. Slope and roughness information are extracted from a world terrain map based on least squares method and fractal theory, respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified on both fractal and real terrain maps.

  • Route design in topographical plane map brings many problems in efficiency and requires much time and labor by hand Recently, the active studies of efficient route design method using 3-D terrain information are being developed according to increasing concentration on GSIS. In order to analyze terrain information for route design efficiently, this study presents objective and overall datum by applying SQL in construction and analysis of database and the possibility of three-dimensional terrain information analysis, This study generates 3-D base map on topographical map of scale 1:5,000 and acquires terrain information that have various thematic map data; contour, land use, roadway, and drange. This is a study on the application of SQL in route design and construction of the terrain information that linked by graphic datum of completed topographical map and attributed datum of database. As the result of this study, we can produce promptly and efficiently design datum of profile annotation, cross section, and volume computations to the preliminary route for route design and apply this efficient method to route design by understanding visual DTM which is composed of the roadway and the natural scene after design.

  • Recently, the efforts of systematic understanding and utilization of geographic phenomenon for human life as a important factor among activity of mankind are increasing. It is necessary to express topography connected with space. Especially, the technology of geographic analysis using DEM can supply the information rapidly and accurately about elevation and terrain slope of the subject area under the necessity of high 3D quality geographic information. In this study, creating more precise DEM derived from LiDAR data, quantitative analysis on the subject area about elevation and terrain slope is done under comparison with Digital Topographic map Scale 1:1000. LiDAR data is more detailed than Digital Topographic map to express the elevation of the subject area ($39.89{\sim}77.48m$), and terrain slope by analysis using DEM derived from LiDAR data come out minutely about 90%. It can be concluded that the LiDAR data is very applicable and accurate for 3D topographic terrain slope analysis.

  • A simulated radar terrain scan data generation method is employed for terrain following. This method scans the discrete terrain by sequentially radiating beams from the radar to the desired scan area with the same azimuth but varying elevation angles. The terrain data collected from the beam is integrated to generate the simulated radar terrain scan data, which comprises radar-detected points. However, these points can be located far from the beam centerline when the radar is far from them due to beam divergence. This paper proposes a geometry-based terrain scan data generation method for analysing simulated radar terrain scan data. The method involves detecting geometric points along the beam centerline, which forms the geometry-based terrain scan data. The analysis of the simulated radar terrain scan data utilising this method confirms that the beam width effects are accounted for in the results.

  • Rail Route Alignment in hilly terrain is a difficult task to implement as several natural constraints poses threat to the safety and stability of the alignment. The conventional methods followed to find out the final location survey or the feasibility analysis for alignment is time taking consuming. Some times, due to inaccessibility of the terrain it becomes impossible to carry out such works. The construction works in hilly terrain, which are associated with the proposed alignment, are not same as carried out in plane areas due to a vast contrast between the two areas. Different geological structures such as faults, thrusts, synclines and anticlines are a big problem to carry out normal construction practices. Thus for a safe and stable railway route in the unstable hilly areas, it is required to carry out the feasibility analysis of the proposed alignment to assist the policy makers for a successful implementation of the alignment. In the present work Remote Sensing and GIS has been successfully used to carry out geological feasibility and slope stability analysis for rail route alignment work.

  • There have been traditional approaches to model radio propagation path loss mechanism both theoretically ad empirically. Theoretical approach is simple to explain and effective in certain cases. Empirical approach accommodates the terrain configuration and distance between base station and mobile unit along the propagation path only. In other words, it does not accommodate natural terrain configuration over a specific area. In this paper, we propose a spatial prediction technique for the mobile radio propagation path loss accommodating complete natural terrain configuration over a specific area. Statistical uncertainty analysis is also considered.
