  • We prepared polycatenar 1H-imidazole amphiphiles having a structure in which a 1H-imidazole head was connected through a benzene ring to a pheny group having two or three oligo(ethylene glycol) chains and studied their supramolecular assembly by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). When the aqueous solutions of the amphiphiles ($5{\times}10^{-5}M{\sim}10^{-3}M$) were deposited onto a carbon-coated copper grid and dried, twisted structures with diameters of ~200-300 nm were imaged by TEM and AFM. We presume that the structures comprised a chain of the amphiphile dimers formed via successive hydrogen bonding between the 1H of the imidazole group and 3N of the neighboring one. In a solution of pH 4, entangled fibers with diameters of several nanometers were observed by TEM. In a pH 10 solution, film-like aggregates formed exclusively. The 1H-imidazole amphiphiles hydrolyzed tetraethoxysilane to induce gelation to form fibrous and spherical silica structures at neutral pH in aqueous solutions. No silica was formed when imidazole was used instead of the amphiphiles, suggesting that the selfassembled aggregates of the amphiphiles were responsible for the gelation.

  • Detailed studies of high resolution TEM inages on the modulated structure caused by Zn vacancy ordering along [110] direction in BZT sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 90 hours had revealed that the images which had hexagonal patterns were similar to those obtained from the structure which had no modulation, These images had appeared over the wide ranges from -30 nm to -42 nm in defocus values and from 2 nm to 20 nm in thickness. The computer simulated images showed that the modulation due to Zn vacancy ordering had made a small change in contrast in the interior of hexagonal pattern, which was very difficult to differenciate in experiments. The image which demonstrated the modulated structure very well was the one which obtained at -52 nm in defocus value and 16 nm in thickness.

  • $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) powders and pellets were synthesized by sol-gel process. The structural changes were investigated by FT-IR, CP/MAS $^{13}C$ solid state NMR spectroscopy and XRD. The particle characterization, microstructure of sintered samples, and cation composition of gel powders were studied by FE-SEM/EDS, TEM and ICP-AES. The structure refinement reveals that $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ has orthorhombic, perovskite type unit cell. The magnetic characterizations were identified through measurement of magnetic moment by VSM.

  • In this study, the Tx(Transmitting) and Rx(Receiving) band pass filter for personal communication services was constructed and designed using .lambda./4 TEM mode dielectric resonators. Band pass filter was composed of ceramics resonators which has been developed using ($Zr_{0.65}$,$Sn_{0.35}$) $Ti_{1.04}$ $O_{4.04}$ ceramic and Unloaded-Q ( $Q_{o}$) of .lambda./4 TEM mode dielectric resonator with inner hole size 0.9mm and external size 3mm using silver electrode is 354.5 at 1.95GHz. For the band pass filter design and construction, the design theory and simulation results of band pass filter using J-inverter theory have been studied. The parameters which are evaluated by design theory are practically applied to the filter construction and the simulation results are in agreement with the measured results after fine tunnings.s.s.s.s.s.

  • We have made an optical device to study the wave optics phenomena, such as image and diffraction pattern, constructive and destructive interference, by direct operation of laser beam and optical lenses. It consists of laser beam, goniometer, objective lens, intermediate lens, projection lens, CCD system, and computing system. As a result of the performance test, we were able to magnify samples up to 44 times with the resolution of about $5{\mu}m$. It is expected to help EM users understanding more easily principles of transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

  • Due to the miniaturization of semiconductor devices, their crystal structure on the nanoscale must be analyzed. However, scanning electron microscope-electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) has a limitation of resolution in nanoscale and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) can be used to analyze restrictive local structural information. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) automated crystal orientation and phase mapping using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) (3D TEM-EBSD) was used to identify the crystal structure relationship between an epitaxially grown CdS interfacial layer and a $Cu(In_xGa_{x-1})Se_2$ (CIGS) solar cell layer. The 3D TEM-EBSD technique clearly defined the crystal orientation and phase of the epitaxially grown layers, making it useful for establishing the growth mechanism of functional nano-materials.

  • In material processing, a laser system with optimal laser parameters has been considered to be significant. Especially, the laser scribing technology is thought to be very important for fabricating DSSC(Dye sensitized solar eel!) modules with good quality. Moreover, the $TEM_{00}$ mode laser beam is the most dominant factor to decide the IPCE(Incident photon to current conversion efficiency) characteristics. In order to get the $TEM_{00}$ mode, a pin-hole is inserted within a simple pulsed Nd:YAG laser resonator. And the spatial field distribution is measured by using three size pin-hole diameters of 2.0, 6.0mm respectively. At that moment, each case has the same laser beam energy by adjusting the discharge voltage and pps(pulse per second). From those results, it is known that the pin-hole size of 2.0mm has the perfect $TEM_{00}$ mode. In addition, at the charging voltage of 1000V, 10pps and the feeding speed of 1.11mm/sec, the SEM photo of FTO(Fluorine-doped tin oxide) thin film layers shows the best scribing trace.

  • A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) containing a flexible spacer was synthesized from hydroquinone, p-hydrofybenzoic acid, and 1,6-dibromohexane. Intercalation of TLCP in layered clays is accomplished by heating the polymer with dodecyl ammonium-montmorillonite (C$_{12}$-MMT) above melt transition temperature (T$_{m}$). Liquid crystallinity of the TLCP/C$_{12}$-MMT hybrid was not observed when $C_{12}$-MMT content was above 1 wt%. Some of the $C_{12}$-MMTs in TLCP were highly dispersed in a nanometer scale, but some of them were agglomerated. Thermal and morphological properties of the nanocomposites were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), polarized optical microscope, and electron microscopes (SEM and TEM). • The in-situ TEM irradiation experiments of zirconium alloy were conducted at 573 K, 673 K, and 773 K utilizing a 400 keV Kr + single beam and a 400 keV Kr+ and 30 keV He + dual beam. The results show that a large number of dislocation loops have been characterized in the matrix of the zirconium alloy under irradiation. With increasing the irradiation damage dose, some dislocation loops have reacted with one another to form a larger dislocation loop, which has finally formed dislocation lines or other defect structures. In zirconium alloys irradiated with Kr + single beam and Kr+ and He + dual-beam radiation, the proportion of <a> type dislocation loops with different Burgers vectors is essentially the same at low damage doses, but the proportion of interstitial type dislocation loops with the same Burgers vectors is obviously different. The amorphization of the second phase and the dissolution of the small-sized second phase were also pointed out. With the increase in temperature, the density of the dislocation loop in zirconium alloy gradually decreases, and the size of dislocation loop first increases and then decreases. Kr+ and He + dual beam irradiation increases the size of dislocation loops but decreases their density as compared with Kr + single beam irradiation.
