  • Evaporation characteristics of a single droplet of carbon nanofluids were investigated in a rapid compression machine(RCM). n-Heptane and carbon black N990 were used to synthesize the carbon nanofluids. RCM is an experimental set-up to simulate a single compression stroke of reciprocating engine. Temperature and pressure in a reaction chamber were measured during the compression stroke. After the piston reaches top dead center(TDC), temperature and pressure decreased due to the heat loss at wall. In that process, a single droplet of carbon nanofluids underwent unsteady condition. A single droplet was put at the center of reaction chamber. Thermocouple whose tip is $50{\mu}m$ was used not only to measure transient bulk temperature, but also to suspend the droplet. The picture of single droplet was taken using high speed camera with a frame rate of 500 fps. From those pictures, the droplet diameter was measured by visual basic program.

  • Pressure resonance frequency that is caused in the combustion chamber can be interpreted to acoustic analysis. Until now the pressure resonance has been assumed and calculated to a disc type combustion chamber that neglected the combustion chamber height because the knock occurs near the TDC(top dead center). In this research FEM(fine element method) has been used to calculate the pressure resonance frequency inside the experimental engine combustion. The reduce error of the resonance frequency obtained by FEM has decreased about 50% compared to the calculation of Draper's equation. Due to the asymmetry in the shape of the combustion chamber that was neglected in Draper's equation we could find out that a new resonance frequency could be generated. To make the experimental results equal we could know that the speed of sound that satisfies Draper's equation was selected 13% higher than all the pent-roof type combustion considered.

  • In order to control ignition advance angle, this system is designed with Z-80 CPU, CTC (counter Timer Circuit), PIO(Parallel Input Output), A/D Converter and Memory, etc. Serial pulses from speed sensor and analog voltage from pressure sensor are converted to digital data. In order to reduce the error of ignition advance angle output, the reference of ignition advance angle output is set 56.25 before TDC(Top Dead Center). The table of ignition advance angle and program which have a main routine and subroutines are written into ROM ( 1 K-byte). The experimental result of this system is correspondent to the theoretical values of proposed ignition advance angle table. This system can be utilized to any other type of 4 cylinder vehicles for advance angle control by changing software.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the effect of double injection strategies on combustion characteristics in a single-cylinder diesel engine. These studies are applied to the double injection strategies, such as $2^{nd}$ injection timing variations with fixed injection interval (8 degree) and variations of injection pressures with fixed injection timing and intervals. The injection quantity was 7 + 7 mg for double injections, and 14 mg for single injection. When the injection pressure was increased, the ignition delay was shortened, and the ISFC (indicated specific fuel consumption) was increased due to the fast termination of combustion by the shortened energizing duration. In addition, the retardation of injection timings toward TDC (top dead center) caused the reduction of ignition delay and the decrease of ISFC with the decrease of FMEP (friction mean effective pressure).

  • The combustion and emission characteristics of a direct injection CI engine fuelled with DME(Dimethyl Ether) and diesel fuel were compared at idle engine speed(800 rpm) with various injection parameters. An optical single cylinder diesel engine equipped with a common-rail fuel injection system was constructed to investigate combustion processes of DME and diesel fuel. The combustion images were recorded with a high-speed video camera system. The results demonstrated that the DME-fuelled engine was superior to the conventional diesel engine in terms of engine performance and emissions. The optimal injection timing of DME was located around IDC(Top Dead Center), which was roughly same as that of diesel fuel. As the injection timing was advanced much earlier than TDC, NOx (Nitric Oxides) level increased considerably. NOx emission of DME was equal or a little higher than that for diesel fuel at the same injection pressure and timing because of higher evaporation characteristics of DME. Throughout all experimental conditions, DME did not produce any measurable smoke level.

  • Currently, in order to meet the reinforced emissions regulations for harmful exhaust gas including carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) as a greenhouse gas, technologies for reducing $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption are being developed. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) systems have the advantage of improved fuel economy and higher power output than port fuel injection gasoline engine systems. The aim of this study is to examine the performance and emission characteristics of a lean burn GDI engine equipped with spray-guided-type combustion system. Stable lean combustion was achieved with a late fuel injection strategy under a constant operating condition. Further improvement in specific fuel consumption is possible with the introduction of multiple fuel injection strategies, which also increases hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) emissions and decreases carbon monoxide (CO) emission.

  • The knock characteristics in an engine were investigated under homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) operation. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)and gasoline were used as fuels and injected at the intake port using port fuel injection equipment. Di-methyl ether (DME) was used as an ignition promoter and was injected directly into the cylinder near compression top dead center (TDC). A commercial variable valve timing device was used to control the volumetric efficiency and the amount of internal residual gas. Different intake valve timingsand fuel injection amounts were tested to verify the knock characteristics of the HCCI engine. The ringing intensity (RI) was used to define the intensity of knock according to the operating conditions. The RI of the LPG HCCI engine was lower than that of the gasoline HCCI engine at every experimental condition. The indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) dropped when the RI was over 0.5 MW/m2and the maximum combustion pressure was over 6.5MPa. There was no significant relationship between RI and fuel type. The RI can be predicted by the crank angle degree (CAD) at 50 CA. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were minimized at high RI conditions. The shortest burn duration under low RI was effective in achieving low HC and CO emissions.

  • Recently it has been focused that the automobile engine has developed in a strong upward tendency for the use of the high viscosity and poorer quality fuels in achieving the high performance, fuel economy, and emission reduction. Therefore it is not easy to solve the problems between low specific fuel consumption and exhaust emission control at motor cars. In this study, it is designed and used the engine test bed which is installed with turbocharger and intercooler. In addition to equipped using CRDI by controlling injection timing with mapping modulator, it has been tested and analyzed the engine performance, combustion characteristics, and exhaust emission as operating parameters, and they were engine speeds(rpm), injection timing(bTDC), and engine load(%). From the result of an experimental analysis, peak cylinder pressure and the rate of pressure rise were increased, and the location of it was closer toward top dead center according to the increasing of engine speed and load, and with advancing injection timing. The combustion characteristics are effected by fuel injection timing due to be enhanced the mass burned fraction. Using the engine dynamometer for analyzing the engine performance, the engine torque and power have been enhanced according to advancing the fuel injection timing. In analyzing of exhaust emission, there has been a trade-off between PM and NOx with increasing of engine speed and load, and with advanced injection timing. The experimental data are shown that the formation of NOx has increased and PM, vice versa.

  • This study used numerical methods to investigates investigate the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) effect under the condition of boost pressure condition on a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion engine using numerical methods. The detailed chemical-kinetic mechanisms and thermodynamic parameters for n-heptane, iso-octane, and PRF50 from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) are were used for this study. The combustion phase affects the efficiency and power. To exclude these effects, this study decided to maintain a 50 burn point (CA50) at 5 CA after top dead center aTDC. The results showed that the EGR increased, but the low temperature heat release (LTHR), negative temperature coefficient (NTC), and high temperature heat release (HTHR) were weakened due by theto effect of the O2 reduction. The combined EGR and boost pressure enhanced the autoignition reactivity, Hhence, the LTHR, NTC, and HTHR were enhanced, and the heat-release rate was increased. also In addition, EGR decraeased the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), but the combined EGR and boost pressure increased the IMEP. As a results, combining the ed EGR and boost pressure was effective to at increase increasing the IMEP and maintaining the a low PRR.
