  • When using TCP over a mobile network, TCP responds to a handoff by invoking a congestion control algorithm, thereby resulting in a degraded end-to-end performance in a mobile network. In this paper, two schemes are proposed, TCP-MD and TCP-R. TCP-MD can detect the movement of s mobile host early on, whereas TCP-R can force the source to freeze data transmission during registration. The proposed schemes maintain end-to-end TCP semantics, making it possible to fully interoperate with the existing infrastructure. Only a small change is required in the mobile host, plus the implementation is simple because some Mobile IP messages are used to notify the handoff, eliminating the need for any additional messages. Simulations confirmed that the proposed schemes give an excellent performance under various environments.

  • Stateful inspection devices must maintain flow information. These devices create the flow information also for network attack packets, and it can fatally inflate the dynamic memory allocation on stateful inspection devices under network attacks. The memory inflation leads to memory overflow and subsequent performance degradation. In this paper, we present a guideline to set the flow entry timeout for a stateful inspection device to remove harmful embryonic entries created by network attacks. Considering Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) if utilized by most of these attacks as well as legitimate traffic, we propose a parsimonious memory management guideline based on the design of the TCP and the analysis of real-life Internet traces. In particular, we demonstrate that for all practical purposes one should not reserve memory for an embryonic TCP connection with more than (R+T) seconds of inactivity where R=0, 3, 9 and $1\leqq{T}\leqq{2}$ depending on the load level.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for applying random linear network coding in satellite communication to improve reliability. In the proposed protocol, network-coded redundancy (NC-R) packets are transmitted in the PEP (Performance Enhancement Proxy). Therefore, if data packets is lost by wireless channel error, they can be recovered by NC-R packets. We also develop the TCP performance model of the proposed protocol and evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol. In the simulation results, It is shown that the proposed protocol can improve the TCP throughput as compared with that of the conventional TCP because the NC-R packets is sent by the sender-side PEP and the receiver-side PEP use these packets to recover the lost packets, resulting in reducing the packet loss in TCP.

  • This paper describes the development of an embedded wireless LAN controller which can be in parallel operated with an existing utility controller. The embedded controller mainly consists of Prism(R) 2.5 chip set and Atmega 128 microcontroller. In order to communicate over the network, the controller including TCP/IP stack (IP, TCP, UDP, and ICMP), telnet, and X/Z modem has been developed. For a specific application, we have proposed an special method to convert data structure between TCP/IP and X/Z modem and a data buffer algorithm to minimize the RAM memory usage. Finally, the correctness and performance of the protocols are tested and verified using $CommView^{(R)}\;and\;DU^{(R)}$. The development is satisfactorily operated only for 3,381 bytes of RAM usage without sacrificing interoperability between hosts.

  • ATM network technology is generally used for the solution of integrating multimedia service in high-speed Internet. In Internet protocol based on ATM services, If single cell is lost in ATM layer, the entire TCP packet will be lost. Therefore, TCP performance will be degraded. In order to reduce cell loss, when congestion occur, UBR+EPD mechanism is proposed to improve the throughput in TCP over UBR, and ER scheme is suggested in TCP over ABR. In this paper, we analyzed the performance improvement effect of UBR+EPD with FRR (Fast Retransmission and Recovery), the adjusting EPD threshold parameter (R), and variation of MTU (Maximum Transport Unit) size. As a result, through the analysis of performance, we know that the improved throughput and fairness are shown by the proposed scheme.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate newly fabricated tricalcium phosphate(TCP)/chitosan microgranuls as bone substitutes. TCP/chitosan microgranules were fabricated by dropping TCP-chitosan suspension into the NaOH/ethanol solution. The size of microgranules could be controllable via airflow rate. PDGF-BB was loaded into the fabricated granules via freeze-drying methods(300 ng/20 mg). To evaluate cell proliferation, cultured osteoblasts cell lines(MC3T3-El) was dropped on the BioOss(R), chitosan microgranules, TCP/chitosan microgranules and cultured for 1, 7 , 14, and 28 days. Scanning electron microscopic observation was done after 7 days of culture and light microscopic examination was done after 28 days of culture. PDGF-BB release from the microgranules was tested. Rabbit calvarial defects(8 mm in diameter) were formed and chitosan, TCP/chitosan, PDGF-TCP/chitosan microgranules, and BioGran(R) were grafted to test the ability of new bone formation. At SEM view, the size of prepared microgranules was 250-1000 um and TCP powders were observed at the surface of TCP/chitosan microgranules. TCP powders gave roughness to the granules and this might help the attachment of osteoblasts. The pores formed between microgranules might be able to allow new bone ingrowth and vascularization. There were no significant differences in cell number among BioOss(R) and two microgranules at 28 day. Light and scanning electron microscopic examination showed that seeded osteoblastic cells were well attached to TCP/chitosan microgranules and proliferated in a multi-layer. PDGF-BB released from TCP/chitosan microgranules was at therapeutic concentration for at least 1 week. In rabbit calvarial defect models, PDGF-TCP/chitosan microgranules grafted sites showed thicker bone trabeculae pattern and faster bone maturation than others. These results suggested that the TCP/chitosan microgranules showed the potential as bone substitutes.

  • In this paper, we propose PEP based on cross-layer and network coding in digital video broadcasting-return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS) networks. In particular, we propose not only a scheme of cross-layer information exchange for interaction between TCP and the resource allocation (RA) scheme in the link layer but also a tuning algorithm for the TCP contention window (CWND) by using information on the RA in the link layer and the redundancy rate for network-coded packets. The simulation results show that TCP CWND can be adjusted by RA information in the proposed protocol. Furthermore, through the transmission of network-coded packets and the proposed CWND tuning algorithm, TCP throughput is enhanced in lossy environment due to user mobility without the unnecessary resource overhead.

  • This paper deals with the problem of unfairness among uplink TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) flows associated with frame aggregation employed in IEEE 802.11n WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks). When multiple stations have uplink TCP flows and transmit TCP data packets to an AP (Access Point), the AP has to compete for channel access with stations for the transmission of TCP ACK (acknowledgement) packets to the stations. Due to this contention-based channel access, TCP ACKs tend to be accumulated in the AP's downlink buffer. We show that the frame aggregation in the MAC (Medium Access Control) layer increases TCP ACK losses in the AP and leads to the serious unfair operation of TCP congestion control. To resolve this problem, we propose the TAC (TCP ACK Compression) mechanism operating at the top of the AP's interface queue. By exploiting the properties of cumulative TCP ACK and frame aggregation, TAC serves only the representative TCP ACK without serving redundant TCP ACKs. Therefore, TAC reduces queue occupancy and prevents ACK losses due to buffer overflow, which significantly contributes to fairness among uplink TCP flows. Also, TAC enhances the channel efficiency by not transmitting unnecessary TCP ACKs. The simulation results show that TAC tightly assures fairness under various network conditions while increasing the aggregate throughput, compared to the existing schemes.
