  • Endometrial cells play important roles in implantation and during pregnancy. This study was carried out to identify whether two-pore domain $K^+\;(K_{2P})$ channels are expressed in endometrial cells of Korean cattle. $K_{2P}$ channels set the resting membrane potential of many kinds of neuronal cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems. RT-PCR data showed that TASK-1, TASK-3, TREK-1, TREK-2, and TRAAK were expressed in bovine endometrial cells, and the mRNA expression levels were similar between endometrial cells with or without endometritis. The protein expression was confirmed by using commercially available polyclonal antibodies (TASK-3, TREK-1, TREK-2, and TRAAK). TASK-3 and TREK-1 were expressed in all area of endometrial cells including nuclei, while TREK-2 and TRAAK were expressed in all area of cells except nuclei. These results demonstrate for the first time the presence of $K_{2P}$ channel in endometrial cells of Korean cattle.

  • The Korean Air Force FA-50 aircraft currently operating in the Air Force is using Ultra High Frequency (UHF) frequency communications for navigation communications with ground control stations or other aircraft. The pilot communicates by changing frequency at any time during flight, and performs communication by directly inputting from the Integrated Up-Front Controller installed in the cockpit. The frequency is designated as secret, and the pilot receives the task with the frequency channel number (001~xxx) and finds the frequency of the channel in the list of 4,000 frequency channels and inputs it manually. This reduces the safety and convenience of pilots' operations and exposes them to hazards that may occur especially during night flight missions. In this paper, we propose a function to embed the frequency corresponding to the frequency channel list in IMDC, the aircraft mission computer, and to automatically change the frequency when the pilot only inputs the channel number.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the community participation in regional health planning by using the operational definition of participation channels, and to find out the significant variables of community participation channel which are highly related to the scores of regional health plan. The channels we adopted for the study are recommended in the guidebook for regional health planning. They are performing residents' helath survey, submitting written agreement of publics, holding public hearings, putting publicnotice, conducting community health committee meeting, submitting opinion of chambers and Mayors, and operating task-force for planning. We analyzed the selected data of 8 community participation channels, which were submitted by 141 rural health centers for the pursuit of governmental subsidy in 1997. The major findings of this study are as follows; 1. In the process of regional health planning, 88.7% of rural community health centers have performed the residents' health survey, 14.9% submitted written agreement of publics, 11.3% held public hearings, 39.0% put public notice, 46.8% conducting community health committee meeting, 48.9% submitted opinion of chambers, 61.7% submitted opinion of Mayors and 25.5% operated task-force for planning. The result shows that most of community participation channels have been utilized at very low rates, except the residents' health survey. 2. We have analyzed the impact of these community participation channels on the regional health plan scores. In the multiple regression model, we set the regional health plan score as the dependent variable., and the use of participation channels as the idependent variables(1 if the channels are used, 0 otherwise). Finally, the regression analyses show that two channel variables, opinion of chambers and public notice, were the significant positive channel variables on the score of community health plan.

  • Gas turbines are extensively used in flight propulsion, electrical power generation, and other industrial applications. During its life span, a turbine blade is taken out periodically for repair and maintenance. This includes re-coating the blade surface and re-drilling the cooling holes/channels. A successful laser re-drilling requires the measurement of a hole within the accuracy of ${\pm}0.15mm$ in position and ${\pm}3^{\circ}$ in orientation. Detection of gas turbine blade/vane cooling hole position and orientation thus becomes a very important step for the vane/blade repair process. The industry is in urgent need of an automated system to fulfill the above task. This paper proposes approaches and algorithms to detect the cooling hole position and orientation by using a vision system mounted on a robot arm. The channel orientation is determined based on the alignment of the vision system with the channel axis. The opening position of the channel is the intersection between the channel axis and the surface around the channel opening. Experimental results have indicated that the concept of cooling hole identification is feasible. It has been shown that the reproducible detection of cooling channel position is with +/- 0.15mm accuracy and cooling channel orientation is with +/$-\;3^{\circ}$ with the current test conditions. Average processing time to search and identify channel position and orientation is less than 1 minute.

  • A new data-driven method for the design of a blind modulation frequency filter that suppresses the slow-varying noise components is proposed. The proposed method is based on the temporal local decorrelation of the feature vector sequence, and is done on an utterance-by-utterance basis. Although the conventional modulation frequency filtering approaches the same form regardless of the task and environment conditions, the proposed method can provide an adaptive modulation frequency filter that outperforms conventional methods for each utterance. In addition, the method ultimately performs channel normalization in a feature domain with applications to log-spectral parameters. The performance was evaluated by speaker-independent isolated-word recognition experiments under additive noise environments. The proposed method achieved outstanding improvement for speech recognition in environments with significant noise and was also effective in a range of feature representations.

  • In this paper, we present the method to effectively extract and classify the EEG caused by only brain activity when a normal subject is in a state of mental activity. We measure the synchronous EEG on the auditory event when a subject who is in a normal state thinks of a specific task, and then shift the baseline and reduce the effect of biological artifacts on the measured EEG. Finally we extract only the mental task signal by averaging method, and then perform the recognition of the extracted mental task signal by computing the AR coefficients. In the experiment, the auditory stimulus is used as an event and the EEG was recorded from the three channel $C_3-A_1$, $C_4-A_2$ and $P_Z-A_1$. After averaging 16 times for each channel output, we extracted the features of specific mental tasks by modeling the output as 12th order AR coefficients. We used total 36th order coefficient as an input parameter of the neural network and measured the training data 50 times per each task. With data not used for training, the rate of task recognition is 34-92 percent on the two tasks, and 38-54 percent on the four tasks.

  • Background: The present study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate the neural substrates for modified version of Treisman's visual search task. Methods: Two volunteers who gave informed consent participated MEG experiment. One was 27- year old male and another was 24-year-old female. All were right handed. Experiment were performed using a 306-channel biomagnetometer (Neuromag LTD). There were three task conditions in this experiment. The first was searching an open circle among seven closed circles (open condition). The second was searching a closed circle among seven uni-directionally open circles (closed condition). And the third was searching a closed circle among seven eight-directionally open circles (random (closed) condition). In one run, participants performed one task condition so there were three runs in one session of experiment. During one session, 128 trials were performed during every three runs. One participant underwent one session of experiment. The participant pressed button when they found targets. Magnetic source localization images were generated using software programs that allowed for interactive identification of a common set of fiduciary points in the MRI and MEG coordinate frames. Results: In each participant we can found activations of anterior cingulate, primary visual and association cortices, posterior parietal cortex and brain areas in the vicinity of thalamus. Conclusions: we could find activations corresponding to anterior and posterior visual attention systems.

  • Five-port reflectometer which consists of a ring with 5 arms (two inputs, three outputs) and three RF power detectors has been used as a vector network analyser, a demodulator in the homodyne receiver as well as in Phase Looked Loop (PLL) and so on. Calibration of five-port reflectometer is an important task. In this paper, we present a calibration method of five-port for a propagation channel sounder. The method is based on measurement of the phase differences between the three voltages at the five-port's outputs in order to determine the ratio of two input incident waves. The frequency channel sounder based on five-port is calibrated for each frequency from 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz with 1 MHz step. This method can also determine the absolute delays of each propagation path in the propagation channel. The calibration method is validated using measurement data.

  • Endometrium undergoing hormonal change plays important roles in preparation for implantation, fetal growth, and well-being. During pregnancy, cellular remodeling and hormonal changes in endometrium could change two-pore domain K$^+$ channel (K$_{2P}$) expression. This study was performed to identify whether K$_{2P}$ channel expression is changed in endometrium of pregnant Korean cattle, and whether the expression level is modulated by progesterone treatment. We investigated changes in the mRNA and protein expressions of K$_{2P}$ channel in pregnant endometrium using RT-PCR and Western blot analyses. The expression levels of all K$_{2P}$ channel mRNAs tested in this study, except that of TREK-1, were changed in the pregnant endometrium. mRNA levels of TASK-3 and TRAAK were significantly down-regulated, whereas those of TREK-2 and TRESK were up-regulated in the pregnant endometrium. In parallel with the RT-PCR results, Western blot analysis revealed up-regulations of TREK-2 (7.9-fold) and TRESK (2-fold) proteins levels in the pregnant endometrium. In addition, TREK-2 and TRESK protein levels were up-regulated in bovine endometrial cells by progesterone treatment (10 ${\mu}g$/ml). From these results, we suggest that the up-regulation of TREK-2 and TRESK by progesterone may contribute to the regulation of physiological changes during pregnancy.

  • Spasmodic dysphonia is a task-specific dystonia affecting the laryngeal muscles, resulting forced, strained voice. The pathophysiologic mechanism is not fully understood. We experienced a patient with epilepsy developed transient spasmodic dysphonia during valproic acid monotherapy. The spasmodic dysphonia resolved with dose reduction of valproic acid. Change of neurotransmitters, such as GABA in basal ganglia or blockade of sodium channel is possible mechanism in our case of drug-related spasmodic dysphonia.
