  • Full-scale utilizations of batch separation process often require knowledge about thermodynamics and correlation techniques of physical properties of complex mixture consisting of a great number of many unknown components. Various empirical correlations have been proposed to predict the physical properties mostly about the pseudocomponent of petroleum. In this study, one parameter correlations are developed for the calculations of the critical physical properties and ideal heat capacity of the pseudo-component of coal tar fractions. Developed model can provide a tool for the design and operations for the batch distillation of coal tar mixture.

  • Biomass gasification is a promising technology in terms of clean energy and flexible options for end use such as heat, steam, electricity, gaseous or liquid fuels. In a gasification process, reduction of tar is very important because it can cause any mechanical problems and small tar implies high energy efficiency. However, generation and conversion mechanisms of tar have not been fully understood due to its complex nature. In this study, characteristics of tar generated from different gasification stages were investigated. Korean pine woodchip was used as feedstock and tar was sampled in a separate way during devolatilization and char gasification stage, investigated. As a result. more various kinds of hydro carbon compounds were identified in the devolatilization stage than char gasification stage because primary tar compounds are released mostly from pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose. When the reaction temperature increased up to $900^{\circ}C$, tar composition becomes simplified into about 10 aromatic compounds mostly with 1-4 rings without substitution up to phenanthrene. The sampled tar in the char gasification stage mostly contains 5-7 simple aromatic compounds.

  • In this paper variable bit rate VBR Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) coded full-motion video traffic is modeled by a nonlinear time-series process. The threshold autoregressive (TAR) process is of particular interest. The TAR model is comprised of a set of autoregressive (AR) processes that are switched between amplitude sub-regions. To model the dynamics of the switching between the sub-regions a selection of amplitude dependent thresholds and a delay value is required. To this end, an efficient and accurate TAR model construction algorithm is developed to model VBR MPEG-coded video traffic. The TAR model is shown to accurately represent statistical characteristics of the actual full-motion video trace. Furthermore. in simulations for the bit-loss rate actual and TAR traces show good agreement.

  • Robust unit root tests are developed for dynamic panels consisting of TAR processes. The test statistics are all based on diverse combinations of individual t-type tests for significance of TAR coefficients. Limiting null distributions are established. A Monte-Carlo experiment compares the proposed tests. The tests are applied to a panel data set of Canadian unemployment rates which show asymmetric features as well as having outliers.

  • Biomass gasification is a promising technology for producing a fuel gas which is useful for power generation systems. In biomass gasification processes, tar formation often causes some problems such as pipeline plugging. Thus, proper tar treatment is necessary. So far, nickel (Ni)-based catalysts have been intensively studied for the catalytic tar removal. However, the deactivation of Ni-based catalysts takes place because of coke deposition and sintering of Ni metal particles. To overcome these problems, we have been using ruthenium (Ru)-based catalyst for tar removal. It is reported by Okada et al., that a Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst is very effective for preventing the carbon deposition during the steam reforming of hydrocarbons. Also, this catalyst is more active than the Ni-based catalyst at a low steam to carbon ratio (S/C). Benzene was used for the tar model compound because it is the main constituent of biomass tar and also because it represents a stable aromatic structure apparent in tar formed in biomass gasification processes. The steam reforming process transforms hydrocarbons into gaseous mixtures constituted of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), carbon monoxide (CO), methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$).

  • Biomass, a carbon-neutral resource, is an alternative energy source for exhaustion of fossil fuel and environmental problems. Most of energy production systems using biomass operate with a thermal chemical conversion method. Amongst them, gasification generates syngas and applies to boilers or engines for the production of heat and electricity. However, Tar could be formed during the production of syngas and it is condensed at low temperature which may cause to clog the pipelines and combustion chamber, ultimately resulting in decrease of process efficiency. Thus this work utilized water and oily materials such as soybean oil, waste cooking oil and mineral oil for scrubbing liquid. The removal efficiency of Tar appeared 97%, 70%, 63% and 30% for soybean oil, waste cooking oil, mineral oil and water respectively.

  • A method of efficiently purifying high value-added indole among components of coal tar absorption oil was studied using a step-by-step process of extraction-distillation-crystallization. The coal tar absorption oil used in this study contains 1.2% naphthalene, 0.1% quinoline, 0.4% isoquinoline, 6.4% indole, 21.0% 1-methylnaphthalene, 48.8% 2-methylnaphthalene, and 11.7% biphenyl as main components. For the separation and purification of indole, methanol was first used as a solvent to separate indole species in the coal tar absorption oil into an extract phase. And then methanol was recovered by distillation. Subsequently, an extraction solution where methanol was removed was mixed with normal hexane, and then crystallized to recover indole having a purity of 99.3%. Based on the experiments of this study, a purification process scheme for indole in coal tar absorption oil was proposed.

  • Objective : This study was produced to examine the effects of moxibustion that had been played important role to traditional oriental medical treatment on disease. Recently, it was reported that moxi-tar which is generated in the process of moxibustion as burning combustibles decreased NO and iNOS generation in C6-glioma and RAW 264.7 cells in our lab. Methods : C6-glioma cells were cultured in RPMI 1640 with FBS 10% in CO2 incubator. To study the protective effects of moxi-tar, we observed cell viability, DPPH activity, SOD activity, catalase activity and cell morphology after injury with $H_2O_2$. Results and Conclusions : Moxi-tar increased cell viability about twice as much as that of being injury by $H_2O_2$(moxi-tar $40{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $H_2O_2$ $500{\mu}M$). And the results of free radical scavenger activity($80{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ : $78.91{\pm}4.4%$), SOD activity and catalase activity($80{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ : 21.6unit/mg protein) were increased by moxi-tar as dose-dependent manner. So we concluded that the effects of moxibustion which is played important role in Oriental medicine, might be free radical scavenger effects induced by moxi-tar. Conclusion : These results indicate that tBHP induces apoptosis through a lipid peroxidation-dependent mechanism and JS exerts the protective effect against the apoptosis by preventing peroxidation of membrane lipids.

  • To find a new use of wood tar which is obtained from the manufacturing process of wood charcoal, a resol type of phenol adhesive using wood tar was made and some adhesion tests on plywood were examined. Phenol adhesive synthesized with pine tar was almost same as an original phenol adhesive in physical properties such as solid content and viscosity and tensile-shear adhesive strength of plywood made of phenol adhesive synthesized with pine tar was not much lower than the original one in non-waterproof and waterproof tests. Phenol adhesive synthesized with oak tar, however, was different from original phenol adhesive in physical properties. Adhesive strength of plywood made of oak tar was $50\%$ lower than the original one on waterproof tests. The amount of emitted formaldehyde increased as the amount of wood tar increased.
