Wave absorbing system is needed at various kinds of wave basins (wave flume, towing tank, square tank) for the model test related to the ocean engineering. In this paper, the performance of wave absorbing system with new concept is estimated throughout the experiments. Herein, the wave absorbing system is designed by punching plate with a given porosity which is installed horizontally and submerged near the water surface. As the incident wave generated by a wave maker advances above a punching plate, the strong jet flow is formed near a hole of punching plate. As a result, wave energy is dissipated into heat energy, Systematic model tests were conducted at KRISO to verify the performance of the wave absorber using a punching plate. It was found that the reflection coefficient of wave absorber is deeply dependent on both the porosity and the submerged depth of a punching plate. Inclined installation of a punching plate shows better performance than a horizontal one within a certain inclined angle.

This study presents a constituent load estimating procedure that can be operated with the present Korean TMDL monitoring system. The modified TANK model is used as a daily river flow simulation model whose parameters are estimated from 8-day intervals flow data. Constituent loads are estimated with the 7-parameter log linear model whose parameters are estimated by the minimum variance unbiased estimator. Results from Nakdong river basin reveals that the proposed procedure provides satisfactory TOC and BOD load estimates. As an application, a representative load duration curve is derived for working out a way to represent the overall hydrologic flux of BOD, COD and TOC at Nakdong river basin. The present water quality can be checked stochastically by Load Duration Curve through this study and presented visually.

A full-scale field experiment is an important part in the design of ships and offshore structures. Full-scale tests in the ice-covered sea, however, are usually very expensive and difficult tasks. Model tests in a refrigerated ice tank may substitute this difficulty of full-scale field tests. One of the major tasks to perform proper model tests in an ice towing tank is to select a realistic material for model ice which shows correct similitude with natural sea ice. This study focuses on the testing material properties and the selection of model ice material which will be used in an ice model basin. The first Korean ice model basin will be constructed at the Maritime & Ocean Engineering Research Institute (MOERI) in 2009. With an application to the MOERI ice model basin, in this study the material properties of EG/AD/S model ice of IOT (Institute for Ocean Technology) Canada, were tested. Through comprehensive bending tests, the elastic modulus and the flexural strength of EG/AD/S model ice were evaluated and the results were compared with published test results from Canada. Instead of using an ice model basin, a cold room facility was used for making a model ice specimen. Since the cold room adopts a different freezing procedure to make model ice, the strength of the model ice specimen differs from the published test results. The reason for this difference is discussed and the future development for a making model ice is recommended.

The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) has an ice tank to make a test environment similar to the real ice in the polar sea in order to carry out model tests. One of the most important task of the ice tank is to generate the model ice to have similar material properties as sea ice. The primary properties of sea ice which influence the ice performance of ice breakers and ice-strengthened vessels traveling in the polar sea are ice thickness, flexural strength, density, modulus of elasticity and crystal structure etc. Among them, since the density of model ice influences the buoyance resistance of ice for the ship model, the accurate measurement of ice density should be used to obtain the accurate analysis results from the model test. In this paper, some existing methods to measure the density of model ice are reviewed and a new one is proposed to measure it accurately and easily as possible. In this study, the measuring system including an UTM and several measuring devices was established to obtain the model ice density. Polyethylene and ice specimens are used for a series of repeatable measurement tests. From the results, it was recognized that both of the displacement method and the weight/weight methods gave the stable and favorable tendency.

An accurate prediction of the hydrodynamic maneuvering darivatives is essential to desing a robust control system of a UUV(unmanned underwater vehicle). Typically, these derivatives were estimated by either the towing tank experiment or semi-empirical methods. With the enhancement of high performance computing capacity, a numerical analysis using computational fluid dynamics has reach the level of experiment. Therefore, the aims of the present research are to numerically develop a computational model for the vertical planar motion mechanism of a UUV and to estimate the hydrodynamics loads in 6-DOF. The target structure of the present study was manta type UUV (12meter length). The numerical model was developed in 1/ 6 model scale. Numerical results were compared with the results of the towing tank experiment for validation. In the present study, a commercial RANS-based viscous solver STARCCM+ (ver 17.06) was used.

In order to develope ship hull forms. many various models are represented numerically in terms of B-spline surfaces and tested experimentally in the towing tank. It is very difficult to make various ship hulls with free forms in handiwork. As the first step of development of a free form cutting machine which becomes a good substitute for high-priced model cutting machines, free forms representation for model cutting are developed. In this paper, NURBUS surfaces are represented on the assumption that data points may be control points contrary to existing methods.

The objectives of this paper were to validate the proposed network flow model using field data and to demonstrate the model applicability for various purposes. The model was tested with data from the Banweol watershed, where an intentive streamflow gauging system has been established. Model parameters were not calibrated with field data so that it can be validated as ungaged conditions. Three different schemes were employed to represent the drainage system of the tested watershed : a single, complex, and detailed network. The single network assumed the watershed as a cell, while complex and detailed networks considered several cells. The results from different schemes were individually compared satisfactorily to the observed daily stages at the Banweol reservoir located at the outlet of the watershed. The results from three schemes were in close agreement with each other, Justifying that the model performs very well for different network schemes being used. Daily streamflow from three network schemes was compared for a selected reach within the watershed. The results were very close to each other regardless of network formulation. And the model was applied to simulate daily streamflow before and after the construction of a reservoir at a reach. The differences were discussed, which reflected the influences of the dam construction upon the downstream hydrology. Similar appliocations may be possible to identify the effects of hydraulic structures on streamflow.

The finite difference simulation method for ship waves is introduced for hull form improvement. Numerical simulations were performed for a series of modified hull forms and the simulated results were used for the determination of the better hull forms. A 4,400 TEU container carrier which was designed and experimented in towing tank was chosen for the purpose. The calculation results are compared with those of model test, of simplified Neumann-kelvin problems and of Rankine source method. In this study, it is shown that the combination of the computer simulation by our method with the experiment provides one of the most economical and reliable procedures of hull form improvement and that the degree of accuracy of this method is so high that it can cope with very practical design purposes.

Theoretical and experimental techniques to analyze the two-dimensional liquid motion in a tank are discussed. A Lagrangian FEM with a velocity correction procedure is introduced to describe incompressible free surface fluid flow. A mesh rezoning technique is used to prevent strong distortion of finite elements in the Lagrangian description. Model test technique for sloshing tank is developed using a hydraulic type bench tester. The influence of the variation in the exciting frequency and amplitude are observed for various fill depths. The results of theoretical calculations are compared with those of experiments.

It is very important to understand the flow characteristics for design of the hull forms with better resistance and propulsive performance. The experimental results explicating the local flow characteristics are also invaluable for validation of the CFD codes for both inviscid and viscous flow calculations. This paper describes the techniques and equipment developed for the measurement of wave pattern on the free surface and local mean velocity fields around the stern of the modern container ship with bow and stern bulbs in KRISO towing tank. The results contained in this paper can provide the valuable information on the flow characteristics of the modern commercial hull form of small block coefficient with high speed.
