Nitrogen Removal from Wastewater by a Multi-stage Bio-reactor (다단 생물반응기에 의한 질소제거)

  • Design data for COD and nitrogen removal from wastewater were collected from Pilot's Multi-stage Bio-reactor. Hyraulic conditions and pollutant loadings were varied in order to optimize the biological and operational parameters. Pilot's experimental results summarize as followings. 1. T-N removal efficiency in the organic volumetric loading 0.2 kgCOD/m$^{3}$·d was obtained as maxium of 85% at internal recycle ratio 2.5 and in more ratio than this it was decreased. Organic removal efficiency was about 91% under the overall experimental conditions and not influenced by recycle ratio.. 2. Nitrification reaction was shown as maxium in the SCOD$_{cr}$/NH$^{+}$-N ratio of 6.5 and in more ratio than this it was decreased. Denitrification rate was the maxium as 85% in more than 7.5 of SCOD$_{cr}$/NO$_{x}$-N ratio and in the ratio over this ratio it becomes constant. 3. By utilizing an applied new model of Stover-Kincannon from Monod's kinetic model, concentration of T-N in the effluent according to flow quanity in the influent was estimated as 8.74 and -67.5 respectively. Cytotoxic Effect and Constituent Profile of Alkaloid Fractions from Ethanolic Extract of Ficus septica Burm. f. Leaves on T47D Breast Cancer Cells

  • The study aimed to investigate the profile of alkaloids in two ethyl acetate soluble fractions, namely fractions A and B from an ethanolic extract of Ficus septica leaves and cytotoxic effect on T47D breast cancer cells. Preparation of both fractions involved maceration of leaves with 70% (v/v) ethanol, filtration with $Al_2O_3$, precipitation with 0.1 N HCl, Mayer reagent, and 0.1 N NaOH, and also partition with ethyl acetate. Qualitative thin layer chromatography (TLC) was conducted to determine the profile of alkaloids in the two fractions, using alkaloid specific reagents such as Dragendorff, sodium nitrite, and Van Urk-Salkowski. Cytotoxic effects of both fractions on T47D cells were evaluated using MTT assay with a concentration series of 1.56; 3.12; 6.25; 12.5; 25 and $50{\mu}g/mL$. The TLC test showed that fractions A and B contained alkaloids with Rx values of 0.74 and 0.80 for fraction A and 0.74, 0.84, 0.92 for fraction B with regard to yohimbine using the mobile phase of n-buthanol:glacial acetic acid:distilled water (3:1:1 v/v/v). Moreover, an indole alkaloid was detected with Rx values of 0.80 and 0.84, respectively. Fractions A and B exhibited high cytotoxic effects on T47D cells with IC50 values of 2.57 and $2.73{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. In conclusion, overall the results of this study showed that fractions of Ficus septica contain alkaloids including indole alkaloid or its derivatives and possess a cytotoxic effect on T47D cells. This research supports the idea that alkaloids in F. septica have anticancer activity.

A Study on the Satisfaction of the Elderly with Mild Dementia using the Dementia Care Center (경증치매노인의 치매안심센터 이용만족도에 관한 연구)

  • This study is done to provide basic data on the effective operation of the new policies by examining the satisfaction level of the elderly with dementia visiting dementia care centers located in 25 autonomous districts of S city. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 217 elderly with dementia who visited the above dementia care center from July 1 to September 30, 2019. The satisfaction tool is a chart score scale that displays negative-positive expressions at both ends of a straight line. The result shows that satisfaction level is significantly higher in the group with trust in the visiting institutions than in the group with distrust (t=9.74, p<.001), higher in cognitive impairment group than in dementia group (t=0.13, p=.034), and higher in mild depression group than in more severe depression group (t=2.31, p=.022). Satisfaction ratios analyzed by logistic regression shows significant differences in factors like gender, age, education, and walking pattern. In conclusion, it is important to run health support programs that consider user characteristics to improve the satisfaction of newly introduced dementia care centers.

Evaluation of Sewage Treatment Plant Efficiency in the Variation of Sewage Inflow and Sludge Interface Height by Rainfall (강우로 인한 유입하수량 증가와 슬러지 계면높이 변화에 따른 하수처리장 효율평가)

  • Variation of sewage sludge interface height and flow rate by rainfall were applied to the actual public sewage treatment plant, and the efficiency of sewage treatment was evaluated by measuring $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, T-N, and T-P. When both flow and interfacial height are increased, the treatment efficiencies in terms of the five water pollutants are decreased. Among them SS is the most critical pollutant in rainfall. When 0.5 Q inflow was applied, the efficiencies were 74.2% at the sludge interface height of 0.5 m, 76.4% at 1.0 m, 70.2% at 1.5 m, and 60.7% at 2.0 m. When 1.0 Q inflow was applied, the efficiencies were 71.7% at the sludge interface height of 0.5 m, 71.9% at 1.0 m, 46.4% at 1.5 m, and -38.0% at 2.0 m. Operation at 2.0 Q~2.0 m and 3.0 Q~1.0 m above the sludge rising phenomenon occurred causing adverse effects on the public bodies. If the flow rate increases, the processing efficiency is reduced from 74.2% to 17.3%, even though the sludge interface height was maintained at 0.5 m, so that the inflow adjustment was most important during rainfall, and the interface height of 1.0 m should be maintained to minimize the adverse effect on public water system.

Home-range Analysis of Pipistrelle Bat (Pipistrellus abramus) in Non-Reproductive Season by Using Radio-tracking (원격무선추적을 이용한 집박쥐의 비번식기 행동권 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the home range size of Pipistrellus abramus in non-reproductive season. The survey was conducted in the day-roosting site of Pipistrellus abramus located in Gyeongju City(North Gyeongsang Province). We radio-tracked six Pipistrellus abramus(male 3, female 3) and LTM single stage radio transmitter(0.38g), R2000 ATS receiver, three element yagi antenna, roof mounted antenna and ArcGIS 3.3(ESRI, Animal Movement Extension 2.0) were used to locate bats and home range analyze. The home range sizes of the 6 radio-tracked Pipistrellus abramus ranged from 8.97 to 19.07ha(Maen $14.46{\pm}3.44ha$). Mean home range size of female($16.83{\pm}1.96ha$) was larger than that of male($12.08{\pm}2.96ha$) but there were no significant differences in home range sizes between male and female(t=2.32, p>0.05). Also, mean maximum distances from the roost was $468.73{\pm}94.38m$ but there were no significant differences between sexes(female, $422.73{\pm}10.38m$; male, $514.74{\pm}125.74m$; t=-1.26, p>0.05).

The Effects of Herb Extracts in Cerebrovascular Accidental Patient (뇌졸중 치료제인 한약의 효과)

  • The several Chinese herbs such as Soon-Ki-Hwal-Hyul-Tang, Bo-Yang-Hwan-O-Tang, Seong-Hyang-Jeong-Ki-San, So-Hap-Hyang-Won and O-Yak-Soon-Ki-San were extracted with water and then lyophilized. For identification of the effect of extracted herbs, they were medicated to 103 patients of cerebrovascular accident for 4 week. They were hospitalized in D-Oriental Medical Hospital from April to August in 1999. The herbs were extracted with water and lyophilized and then, used as samples. The medical history of each patient was detected and analyzed from their medical records. The results were as follows; 1) Each sample (Soon-Ki-Hwal-Hyul-Tang, Bo-Yang-Hwan-O-Tang, Seong-Hyang-Jeong-Ki-San, and O-Yak-Soon-Ki-San) was statistically significant differences of systolic blood pressure(t=4.22, P=0.0004; t=3.44, P=0.0028; t=2.11, P=0.0463; t=3.23, P=0.0052). The statistically significant difference of diastolic blood pressure showed by medicated with Soon-Ki-Hwal-Hyal-Tang, Seong-Hyang-Jeong-Ki-San, and O-Yak-Soon-ki-San (t=2.13, P=0.0459; t=2.68, P=0.0136; t=3.12, P=0.0066). 2) The statistically significant difference of the arm/leg-ROM showed by medicated with Soon-Ki-Hwal-Hyul-Tang, Bo-Yang-Hwan-O Tang, So-Hap-Hyang-Won(t=4.74/4.95, P=0.0002/0.0001; t=2.25/2.44, P=0.0368/0.0248; t=5.85/6.76, P=0.0001/0.0001). 3) In the verbal disorder, Soon-Ki-Hwal-Hyul-Tang, Bo-Yang-Hwan-O-Tang had statistically significant differences(t=4.50, P=0.0002; t=3.32, P=0.0036). 4) In the conscious disorder, Soon-Ki-Hwal-Hyul-Tang, Bo-Yang-Hwan-O-Tang, Seong-Hyang-Jeong-Ki-San, and So-Hap-Hyang-Won had statistically significant differences(t=6.32, P =0.0001; t=8.32, P=0.0001; t=3.74, P=0.0012; t=5.14, P=0.0001). 5) Bovine aortic endothelial cell (BAEC) were cultured in DMEM treating 0.01mg/ml, and 0.1mg/ml of each lyophilized samples for 24 hours. In BAECs were treated by 5 kinds of samples, the effect of So-Hyap-Hyang-Won induced syncytium of adjacent endothelial cells. It may induce the recovering of the damaged blood vessels in cerebrovascular accidental patient by angiogensis of endothelial cells. Therefore, it suggests that the medication of So-Hap-Hyang-Won will help to nursing care for cerebrovascular accidental patients.

Studies on the improvement of the productivity of purse seine fishery-III - The characteristics on the motion with the flow velocity of model purse seine of the subjective power block and triplex during pursing - (선망어업의 생산성 향상에 관한 연구-III - 죔줄 체결시 파워불록과 트리플랙스용 선망 모형의 유속에 따른 운동특성 -)

  • This fundamental studies on for the productivity improvement and laborsaving of purse seine fishery. Given the difficulty posed from the distortion of net shape caused by the external forces, such as tide, at the time of shooting and pursing, we set the 4 steps of 0, 2, 4 and 6cm/sec in flow velocity in the flume tank for the experiment in order to examine those characteristics. We used two model seines designed on the scale of 1 to 180 based on the power block seine, which is the mackerel purse seine generally used in the near sea of Jeju Island and triplex seine, which is the mackerel purse seine of one boat system fishing expected in the future, for the experiment, and interpreted the characteristics of several motion in water, such as the shape of seine, the change in tension and area during pursing and its the analysis results are as follows. Though the experiment could be conducted up to 6cm/sec of flow velocity that was defined, the experiment could not go on because of the severe distortion in the seine at the flow velocity in excess of 6cm/sec. As for the depth of leadline and reduction rate of side area of seine when the pursing is connected, P seine turned out to be slightly higher than T seine, and the hauling speed and reduction rate of upper area of seine were found similar to each other. The correlation between the hauling time (Ht) and depth of lead line (Dhp, Dht) of P seine and T seine can be expressed by the equation, that is, Dhp=(0.99Pt-7.63)Pt+69.01, Dht=(1.03Pt-7.73)Pt+66.74. The correlation between the hauling time and hauling velocity (Hpp, Hpt) can be expressed by the equation, that is, $Hpp=-0.06Ht^2+0.88Ht+0.78,\;Hpt=-0.05Ht^2+0.81Ht+0.98$ here, Pt is pursing time. And the correlation between the pursing time and the reduction rate of side area (sArp, sArt) can be expressed by the equation, that is, $sArp=-0.48Pt^2+14.79Pt-16.74,\;sArt=-0.45Pt^2+14.56Pt-16.48$. The reduction rate of upper area of seine (tArp, tArt) can be expressed by the equation, that is, $tArp=0.34Pt^2-0.66Pt-0.74,\;tArt=0.34Pt^2-0.27Pt-1.80$. In addition, the correlation between the pursing time and tension of purse line (Tep, Tet) can be expressed by the equation, that is, $Tep=2.79Pt^2+2.26Pt-0.60,\;Tet=2.14Pt^2+8.08Pt-27.50$.

Fiber Fabry-Perot type Optical Current Transducer with Frequency Ramped Signal Processing Scheme

  • The use of a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI) as an optical current transducer is demonstrated. A conventional inductive pickup coil converts the time-varying current I(t) being measured to a voltage waveform V(t) applied across a piezeolectric strip to which the FFPI is bonded. The strip experiences a longitudinal expansion and contraction, resulting in an optical phase shift ${\phi}(t)$ in the fiber proportional to V(t). This phase shift is measured using a frequency-modulated semiconductor light source, photodiodes to monitor the reflected light from the FFPI and the laser power, and a digital signal processor. Calibration routines compute V(t) and I(t) from the measured phase shift at a l KHz rate. Response to 60 Hz ac over the design range 0-1300A rms is characterized Transient response of the FFPI transducer is also measured.
