  • The concept of dissipativity and passivity are of interest to us from a theoretical as well as a practical point of view. It is well known that the Riccati equation is derived from the dissipation inequality which expresses the fact that the system is dissipative; the energy stored inside the system doesn't exceed the amount of supply which flows into the system. The pencil model is regarded as a representation based on behavioral approach introduced by J.C. Willems. It has first order in the internal variable and zeroth order in the external variable. In general, any matrix pencil is transformed into a canonical form which is consist of several kind of sub-pencils, One of them has row full rank for $^\forall S\;\in\;\mathds{C}\;\bigcup{\infty}$, we call it under-determined mode of the model. In our opinion, most important properties of dynamical system lay in the mode. According to the properties of canonical form for pencil, it is shown that the storage function which characterizes the dissipativity of the system can be written as a LMI for the under-determined mode, if the system doesn't include impulse mode.

  • In this paper, I propose some policy and theoretical implications by analyzing moderating effects of volunteering activity in the causal relationships between social welfare major choice and their job choice. For the purpose of the goal of this study, I surveyed 242 university students in 2~4 grades majoring social welfare in Gwangju and South and North Jeolla Province. Analysis results showed that the personal motive on choosing a major affects the occupational aptitude & interests and economic feasibility of career when they choose their jobs. However, the social motive didn't affect the occupational aptitude & interests and economic feasibility of career. It means that they didn't choose their majors considering their aptitude & interests, but chose them by following the advice of the surrounding people. Also, moderating effects of volunteering activity was not significant, which means that volunteering period and schedules are too short and tend to be operated as a mere formality. This study suggests the policy implications so that they have the correct major selection and career options based on the analysis results.

  • We cloned and characterized a very late expression factor 1 gene, vlf-1, which regulates the level of very late gene transcripts, from Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) K1 strain. The 1,140 bp vlf-1 has an open reading frame of 379 amino acid and a MW of 44 kDa. The vlf-1 nucleotide sequence of BmNPV-Kl showed high homology with Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus and BmNPV T3 strain so far known, and its deduced amino acid residues were identical to those of BmNPV T3. The location of vlf-1 in the BmNPV-Kl genome was confirmed by Southern blot analysis and its expression patterns at the transcriptional level were confirmed by Northern hybridization analysis.

  • Although honeybees (Apis mellifera) are crucial for maintenance of the ecosystem, population of honeybee has been steadily decreasing due to diseases including nosemosis. Nosemosis is a disease caused by Nosema ceranae and is now considered as a major threat to honeybees. N. ceranae is a microsporidian that stays in form of spore even before the infection, which makes it harder to control than other pathogens. People are now aware of this parasite, however, cure and preventive candidates for nosemosis are hardly found until today. In this study, in vitro experiment of Lespedeza cuneata treatment to prevent nosemosis were done using Trichoplusia ni cell line, BTI-TN5B1-4. Normal T. ni cells exhibited round shape without abnormal size. On the other hand, when N. ceranae were treated, cells deteriorated and some cells abnormally enlarged due to N. ceranae infection. Interestingly, treatment of T. ni cells with L. cuneate extract protected abnormal cell shape induced by N. ceranae infection to normal shape. Some N. ceranae spores were observed outside of the cells. Effective concentration range for N. ceranae control were experimented. Lowest concentration which can control nosemosis were 50 ㎍/mL. When the concentration of L. cuneata extract was exceeded 200 ㎍/mL, cytotoxicity started to show up.

  • Annual sediment deposition in reservoirs behind weirs poses flood risk, while its accurate prediction remains a challenge. Sediment management by hydraulic flushing is an effective method to maintain reservoir storage. In this study, an integrated approach to predict sediment inflow and sediment flushing simulation in reservoirs is presented. The annual sediment inflow prediction was carried out with Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) modelling. RESCON model was applied for quantification of sediment flushing feasibility criteria. The integrated approach was applied on Sangju Weir and also on estuary of Nakdong River (NREB). The mean annual sediment inflow predicted at Sangju Weir and NREB was 400,000 ㎥ and 170,000 ㎥, respectively. The sediment characteristics gathered were used to setup RESCON model and sediment balance ratio (SBR) and long term capacity ratio (LTCR) were used as flushing efficiency indicators. For Sangju Weir, the flushing discharge, Qf = 140 ㎥/s with a drawdown of 5 m, and flushing duration, Tf = 10 days was necessary for efficient flushing. At NREB site, the parameters for efficient flushing were Qf = 80 ㎥/s, Tf = 5 days, N = 1, Elf = 2.24 m. The hydraulic flushing was concluded feasible for sediment management at both Sangju Weir and NREB.

  • The vibration of microtubule in human cells is the source of electrical field around it and inside cell structure. The induction of electrical field is a direct result of the existence of dipoles on the surface of the microtubules. Measuring the electrical fields could be performed using nano-scale sensors and the data could be transformed to other computers using internet of things (IoT) technology. Processing these data is feasible by artificial intelligence-based methods. However, the first step in analyzing the vibrational behavior is to study the mechanics of microtubules. In this regard, the vibrational behavior of the microtubules is investigated in the present study. A shell model is utilized to represent the microtubules' structure. The displacement field is assumed to obey first order shear deformation theory and classical theory of elasticity for anisotropic homogenous materials is utilized. The governing equations obtained by Hamilton's principle are further solved using analytical method engaging Navier's solution procedure. The results of the analytical solution are used to train, validate and test of the deep neural network. The results of the present study are validated by comparing to other results in the literature. The results indicate that several geometrical and material factors affect the vibrational behavior of microtubules.
