In order to investigate the shear characteristics of earth structure after construction. Four sample soils with different gradation were selected and compacted under the optimum moisture content and the maximum dry density. And the direct shear test and the triaxial compression test were performed with those sample soils under various pre-compression loads. The results were summarized as follows; 1. With the increase of the percent passing of No. 200 sieve, the cohesion of soil increased regularly and the internal friction angle of soil decreased with slow ratio. 2. The pre-compression increased the shear strength of compacted cohesive soil. The increase of cohesion was very apparent but the internal friction angle didn't show such regular tendency. 3. With the increase of pre-compression load, the slope of stress-strain curve showed steep at the early stage of horizontal strain. The vertical strain was small at the compression stage and big at the expansion stage. 4. When the vertical stress of shear test with increase in the horizontal strain was small, stress ratio(shear stress vs. vertical stress) of sample showed the largest value and the slope of stress ratio curve showed also steep. 5. When the sample was had the same condition, the cohesion of soil showed bigger value in the triaxial compression test and the internal friction angle of soil showed bigger value in the direct shear test.
The characteristics of the Brazilian tensile strengths(σt) parallel to the rock cleavages in Jurassic granite from Geochang were analysed. The evaluation for the six directions of rock cleavages was performed using the parameter values on microcrack length and the above strength. The strength values of the five test specimens belonging to each direction were classified into five groups. The strength values of these five groups increase in order of group A < B < C < D < E. The close dependence between the above microcrack and strength was derived. The analysis results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the chart showing the variation and characteristics of strength among the three rock cleavages were made. In the above chart, the strength values of six directions belonging to each group were arranged in order of rift(R1 and R2), grain(G1 and G2) and hardway(H1 and H2). The strength distribution lines of the five groups concentrate in the direction of R1. And the widths among the above five lines indicating strength difference(Δσt) are the most narrowest in R1 direction. From the related chart, the variation characteristics among the two directions forming each rock cleavage were derived. G2(2)-test specimen shows higher value and lower value of the difference in strength compared to the case of G1(1)-test specimen. These kinds of phenomena are the same as the case between the test specimen H2(2) and H1(1). The strength characteristics of the above test specimens (2) suggest lower microcrack density value and higher degree of uniformity in the distribution of microcracks arrayed parallel to the loading direction compared to those of test specimens (1). The six strength values belonging to each group were arranged in increasing order in the above chart. The strength values of the test specimens belonging to both group D and E appear in order of R1 < R2 < G1 < H1 < G2 < H2. Therefore, the strength values of group D and E can be indicator values for evaluating the six directions of rock cleavages. Second, the correlation chart between slope angle(θ) and strength difference(Δσt) were made. The values of the above two parameters were obtained from the five strength distribution lines connecting between the two directions. From the chart related to rift plane(G1-H1, R'), grain plane(R1-H2, G') and hardway plane(R2-G2, H'), the slope values of linear functions increase in order of R'(0.391) < G'(0.470) < H'(0.485). Among three planes, the charts related to hardway plane show the highest distribution density among the five groups. From the related chart for rift(R1-R2, R), grain(G1-G2, G) and hardway(H1-H2, H), the slope values of linear functions increase in order of rift(0.407) < hardway(0.453) < grain(0.460). Among three rock cleavages, the charts related to rift show the highest frequency of groups belonging to the lower region. Taken together, the width of distribution of the slope angle among the three planes and three rock cleavages increase in order of H' < G < R' < R < G' < H. Third, the correlation analysis among the parameters related to microcrack length and the tensile strengths was performed. These parameters may include frequency(N), total length(Lt), mean length(Lm), median length(Lmed) and density(ρ). The correlation charts among individual parameters on the above microcrack(X) and corresponding five levels of tensile strengths for the five groups(Y) were made. From the five kinds of correlation charts, the values of correlation coefficients(R2) increase along with the five levels of strengths. The mean values of the five correlation coefficients from each chart increase in order of 0.22(N) < 0.34(Lt) < 0.38(ρ) < 0.57(Lmed) < 0.58(Lm). Fourth, the correlation chart among the corresponding maximum strength for group E(X) and the above five parameters(Y) were made. From the related chart, the values of correlation coefficient increase in order of 0.61(N) < 0.81(Lt) < 0.87(ρ) < 0.93(Lm) < 0.96(Lmed). The two parameters that have the highest correlations are median length with maximum strength. Through the above correlation analysis between microcrack and strength, the credibility for the results from this study can be enhanced.
The aim of this study was to provide basic data that could identify and help prevent a slow-moving landslide using an analysis of the relationship between below-ground characteristics and water from three slow-moving landslide areas in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. Surface surveys, resistivity, seismic exploration, well logging, and boring surveys were conducted in the three areas. The main direction of discontinuous surface was matched with the slope direction of the three landslides. The results indicatedthat slow-moving landslides might occur in the direction of the slope. Underground water was distributed within the crush zones within the three landslide areas and flowed along the tensile cracks. There was a significant difference (p<0.01) between the mean angle of the tensile cracks and that of the underground waterflow (p=0.8019). These results indicated that the progress of a slow-moving landslide can be forecast by monitoring the location and flow of underground water within a known slow-moving landslide area.

The study was carried out for the strength parameter of coarse grained Soil and slope stability analysis of earth dam. The test samples were taken fifteen kinds of soil from cohesive soil to coarse gravel. The degree of compaction of test samples for shear test and permeability test was chosen 95 percentage of maximum dry density. The results of this study are as follows ; 1.The maximum dry density(Yd) of coarse grained soil increase in proportion to coarse particles(P) with the relation of Y d= 1.609+0.0043P. 2.The coefficients of permeability(k) decrease by the increase of fine particles(n) with the relation of k=0.0426e-0 185n. 3.The cohesions of soil decrease by the increase of coarse particles, but internal friction angles are more increased in same condition. 4.The internal friction angles(${\Phi}$) decrease in inverse proportion to void ratio(e) with the relation of ${\Phi}$ = 73.068 - 69.268e. 5.The strength parameters( Ct ${\Phi}$t) by triaxial compression test are clearly smaller than that (Cd, ${\Phi}$d) by direct shear test in fine grained soil, but the differences between both parameters are a little in coarse grained soil. The relations of both parameters are as follows; Ct = O.544Cd + 0.04 ${\Phi}$t= 1.282${\Phi}$d-2306 6.In cohesive soil, the strength parameters( Cl ${\Phi}$l) by large size shear test apparatus are similar to the strength parameters(Cs , ${\Phi}$s) by small size shear test appratus, but Cs and ${\Phi}$s values are larger than Cl and ${\Phi}$l values from 10 percentage to 20 percentage in coarse grained soil. 7.The fine grained soil is inappropriate to high dam more than 20 meters and it must be taken coarse grained soil with high internal friction angle for high dam.
Landslides, one of earth's natural disasters, increase every year due to heavy rainfall, and cause damage to human life and assets. This study used the SHALSTAB to predict places at risk of landslides, in accordance with the intensity of rainfall. The parameter value of transmissivity was $19.58m^2/day$, the internal friction angle $36.3^{\circ}$, and the saturated unit weight $2.03t/m^3$. The slope stability status was classified into four categories, namely: unconditionally stable, stable, unstable and unconditionally unstable. In order to evaluate the applicability of the SHALSTAB, actual landslide areas were checked, with the unstable area under 263 mm rainfall. 85.1% of them were consistent. And so we can identify the distribution of places at risk of landslides, on the basis of the intensity of rainfall by means of SHALSTAB.
In this study, application potential of SINMAP, a GIS-based landslide hazard mapping tool, is evaluated through a case study. Through the application to the severe landslide events occurred during a heavy storm in 1991 on the Mt. Dalbong area about 78 kilometers south from Seoul, SINMAP successfully spotted most landslide sites. The effects and proper ranges of three calibration parameters of SINMAP, i.e. the soil internal friction angle, the combined cohesion of tree roots and soil, and T/R, were examined through comparison of predicted landslides with the landslide inventory data. From the findings of this study, it seems that SINMAP could be used as an effective screening tool for landslide hazard mapping especially for mountain areas with fairly steep slopes and relatively thin soil layers.
Previous studies have postulated that isometric animals exert similar locomotory capacity (speed, distance) because the amount of energy available for the motion would be the same regardless of body mass (m). To test propriety of this theory, we examined body shape and take-off potential of two frog species, Rana nigromaculata (powerful jumpers) and Bombina orientalis (slow hoppers). Morphological measurements included thigh muscle mass (indicative of total muscle force), hindlimb length (L, determining acceleration distance), and interilial width (shaping take-off motion). To gauge locomotory capacity, take-off speed (v) and take-off angle ($\theta$) were measured from video analyses, and jump distance (R) and take-off Power ($P_{t}$ ) were calculated from equations $R=V^{2}sin2\theta/g$ and ($P_{t}$=$㎷^{3}/2L$(where g is the gravitational constant). Scaling exponents of morphometric variables for both species were 0.96-1.11 for thigh muscle mass, 0.28-0.29 for hindlimb length, and 0.30-0.36 for interilial width. Scaling exponents of locomotory performance for the two species were -0.01-0.14 for take-off speed, 0.24-0.31 for jump distance, and 0.66-0.84 for take-off power. The results demonstrate that the frogs of this study showed isometric body shape within species, but that take-off response changed allometrically with body mass, indicating that these data did not fully support the previous proposition. An exception was found in take-off speed of B. orientalis, in which the speed changed little with body mass (slope=-0.01). These findings suggest that the energy availability approach did not properly explain the apparent allometric relations of the take-off response in these animals and that an alternative model such as a power production approach may be worth addressing.
With the aim of restoring slow-moving landslide areas, this study collected fundamental data from tree-ring analysis of curved trees in these areas. We collected both upper and lower stem disks to measure the azimuth angles of six trees with growth curvature caused by tension cracks. Additionally, we analyzed various factors in the slow moving landslide area. The geological strata and main constitutive rocks in the study area were anorthosite-formed in the Precambrian period; moreover, there were no intrusive rocks, other geological strata, geological folds, or faults. The talus with weathered rocks was distributed in the upper zone of the slow-moving landslide area. According to annual-ring analysis of curved trees and terrain analysis by satellite imagery, slow-moving landslide occurred from the top to the bottom end of the slope between 1999 and 2011. There was a significant relationship (P < 0.01) between the azimuth angle of cracks caused by the slow-moving landslide and the angle of the curved trees. These results suggest that the occurrence of slow-moving landslides could be confirmed through analysis of annual-rings of curved trees, underground water levels, and terrain (by satellite imagery).
In this study we performed risk evaluation based on parameters using the SINMAP, GIS-based extended program in order to predict ground disaster that is frequent recently. As for the risk evaluation, in order to understand the effects of parameters, we defined that the ranges of internal friction angles and T/R values as important variables had three and four patterns, respectively. The results of the interpretation were compared with those of the existing landslide in order to identify landslide flow and to evaluate the applicability of the parameters. The analysis of the geomorphologic saturated zone showed that the boundary saturated zone and the saturated zone were almost consistent with the site of avalanche of earth and rocks and the area of underground water convergence was correlated to the area where collapse started, indicating that the geomorphologic saturated zone may serve as an index for estimating possibility of landslide when used with slope distribution, colluvial soil, and structures inducing landslide in combination. When the lower limit of the internal friction angle increased more, the upper threshold decreased by 50 to 70% and the influence on the stability index was higher, but the influence was declined within the range of lower wetness index. The analysis of changes based on wetness index range showed that all the groups have similar SI distribution, except for the one in which mean altitude values are applied, indicating that the results are susceptible more by the internal friction angle than by the wetness index.
It has been known that the shear strength of soil is an important design parameter for the foundation of structures, the retaining walls, the slope failures and so forth. In this study, the shear test was performed by using the direct shear apparatus under various degree of the moisture content and the density of the sample soils. The results of the study were summarized as follows; 1. The shear strength of soil increased with increase in the dry density of soil, and at the same level of density of the sample the shear strength of soil showed large values on a good grading of the sample. 2. The cohesion of the soil varied directly with the dry density of it, however the internal friction angle of soil was not affected by the dry density of tile sample. 3. The shear strength of sample varied inversly with the moisture content of it, and this phenomenon was apparent on a good grad ing of sample. 4. The cohesion of soil showed maximum value when the moisture content of the soil reached optimum level and the internal friction angle decreased with increase in the moisture content of it. These phenomena were very obvious on a good grading sample, SDC-1. 5. The cohesion of the soil decreased with increase in void ratio of the sample, but the internal friction angle of the sample didn't show such tendency.
