This study was carried out to investigate the effects of influent $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ load, C/N ratio and superficial air velocity on the nitrogen removal efficiencies. Laboratory scale upflow biological aerated filter(BAF) was consisted of an anoxic-aerobic filter packed with porous ceramic media and operated with synthetic wastewater. BAFs requires less energy and space for the system when compared to conventional activated sludge process. The influent C/N ratios were varied from 0 to 1 by adjusting acetate. Various superficial air velocity had been applied to investigate aeration effect on nitrogen removal. The BAF reactor showed more than 90% average $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ removal efficiencies at $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ loading in the range of $0.26{\sim}1.33$ kg $NH_4^{\;+}-N/m^3{\cdot}d$ and 62% average T-N removal efficiencies at the C/N ratio of 1. Moreover, average T-N removal efficiencies increased as the superficial air velocity increased, because of the increase $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ removal efficiencies.
The operational characteristics of anaerobic bioreactors in treating swine wastewater were evaluated upto hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 day and organic loading rate (OLR) of $5.1kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ for 200 days. The bioreactors were effective in treating swine wastewaters with COD removal efficiency of $78.9{\sim}81.5%$ and biogas generation of $0.39{\sim}0.59m^3/kg-COD_r$ at OLR of $1.1{\sim}2.2kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$. The two-stage ASBF anaerobic bioreactors was effective in treating different characteristics of swine wastewaters since they showed high and stable COD removal efficiency at high OLR due to effective retention of biomass by media and staging. The effects of ammonia on anaerobic digestion were investigated by operating two-stage ASBF reactors using swine wastewaters as influent without and with ammonia removal at HRT of $1{\sim}2$ days and OLR of $2.2{\sim}9.6kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ for 250 days. The COD removal efficiency and biogas generation of two-stage ASBF reactors was decreased by increasing influent ammonia concentrations to 1,580 mg (T-N)/L with increasing OLR to $6.3kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, while those were increased by maintaining influent ammonia concentrations below 340 mg (T-N)/L by MAP precipitation with increasing OLR to $9.6kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$. Initial inhibition of ammonia on anaerobic processes was observed at a concentration of 760 mg (T-N)/L and the COD removal efficiency and biogas generation dropped to 1/2 at ammonia concentration ranges of $1,540{\sim}1,870mg$ (T-N)/L. It is essential to remove ammonia in swine wastewaters to an initial inhibition level before anaerobic processes for the effective removal of COD.
The purpose of this study was to investigate applicability of pretreatment on the existing biological treatment for domestic wastewater reclamation. From Jar Tests, it was found that optimum dosage of coagulant was PAC 0.5mg/L and $FeCl_3$ 180mg/L for urban sewage. In this study, PAC 0.5mg/L was selected considering sludge production and the amount of coagulant required. In a continuous experiment performed with combining chemical coagulation and biological treatment, a considerable removal efficency was obtained in term of BOD, SS, T-N, T-P and ABS. When the raw sewage was supplied into the pre-chamical treatment facility, the removal of BOD and SS was 48.3% and 81.1%. However T-N removal was very low which means T-N consists of $NH_3-N$ mostly. T-P was almost completely recluced by the chemical addition. The effluent BOD & SS was 57~76 and 21~43mg/L, which could reduce the size of biological treatment facility. From the cost estimation pre-chemical treatment could save around half of the area required for biological treatment with post ceagulation.
In the advanced treatment of sewage using the submerged membrane-coupled sequencing batch reactor (SMSBR) with media, the effect of media on the filtration performance and removal efficiency were investigated. Dosages of the media in the SMSBR were 10% based on working volume of reactor. As a control system, SMSBR without media and PAC, SMSBR with PAC (10 g/L) only, and SMSBR with media and PAC were also operated. The experimental results showed that there was no big difference observed in the removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P irrespective of the dosages of the media and PAC. But transmembrane pressure (TMP) of SMSBR with media increased slowly during the operation time, while that of SMSBR without media increased rapidly. Using SMSBR with media, it was possible to operate without the membrane cleaning during the 91 days. Using SMSBR with media only, after 80 days the average removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P were 95.0, 69.3%, and 51.4%, respectively.
In this paper, we investigated the effect of an indirect oxidation zone in an electrolysis reactor that used Ti/$IrO_2$ as the anode and SUS 316L as the cathode. Based on our preliminary results, the electrolysis reactor was operated with pole plate interval of 6 mm, current density 1.0 $A/dm^2L$ and electrolyte concentration 15%. The removal efficiency, COD (chemical oxygen demand), was additionally increased by 55% and 12.5${\sim}$15.0% in the direct and indirect oxidation zones, respectively. The removal efficiencies of T-N (total nitrogen) and T-P (total phosphorus) were found to be 88% and 75%, respectively. It was shown that the additional effect of the indirect oxidation zone on the removal was nearly negligible. Also, as the removal of COD,T-N and T-P took place during the initial2${\sim}$5 days of reaction, it was concluded that there was no need to extend the retention time of the electrolysis reactor.
This research was about T-N removal efficiency of oxic reactor in which fixed media submerged from Membrane BNR(An+Ax+Ox) process. This experiment was implemented by using fixed media and changing DO concentration in the oxic reactor. Nitrification efficiencies of all modes were more than 98%. When no media was in the oxic reactor, T-N removal efficiency was only 47.4%, while it were shown from 60.3% to 67.4% with packed media, which indicated improved efficiency of 27~42%. The removal efficiencies of TCOD and BOD were more than 89%, 98% respectively, which could satisfy the guideline of advanced sewage reclamation by Department of Environment. When DO concentration in the packed oxic-media tank was 0.5~1.0 mg/L, T-N removal efficiency was low, which resulted from insufficient nitrification in the oxic reactor. Therefore, DO concentration of bulk solution needs to be kept more than 1.0 mg/L to induce higher nitrification efficiency in the reactor in which media was submerged. Also, the selection of DO concentration is important to prevent media from being clogged.

In the present work, the sequencing batch reactor process of two-sludge type was optimized. The effects of solid retention time, hydraulic retention time, length of biosorption phase and temperature variation were investigated, respectively. In the T-N removal, the long solid retention time was favored. It was speculated that SCOD biosorption efficiency was higher in long solid retention time than in short solid retention time. In the comparison of hydraulic retention time, the removal efficiency of $NH_4^+-N$ and T-N were almost same in all applied hydraulic retention times which were 8 hr, 10 hr and 15 hr. It was observed that there was no need to have the hydraulic retention time more than 20 min in biosorption phase for enhancement of T-N removal efficiency. An experimental comparison of removal efficiencies with different temperature conditions was carried out. Decrease of temperature didn't affect the performance of the process, however, phosphorus removal efficiency was a little higher at low temperature than high temperature. Consequently, the process developed in this study was much amenable to wastewater treatment which was conducted in the low temperature and high loading rate.
In this study, the removal efficiencies of organics, nitrogens and phosphorus from municipal wastewater using $A^2$/O process were investigated. BO $D_{5}$ removal efficiencies were indicated 95% and 94% with HRT of 12 hr and 10 hr, respectively. CO $D_{Cr}$ average removal efficiency and concentration of effluent were indicated 87% and 34mg/$\ell$. SS average removal efficiency and concentration of effluent were indicated 93% and 4~17mg/$\ell$. T-N removal efficiency and concentration of effluent were shown as 60~80% and below 15mg/$\ell$. In aerobic basin, removal efficiency of N $H_4$-N was shown over 97% with N $H_4$-N volume load 0.16kg N $H_4$-N/㎥.d and in anoxic basin, denitrification efficiency was indicated over 80% with return sludge rate 0.5Q and internal recirculation rate 2.5Q. Removal efficiency and effluent concentration of phosphorus were shown over 80% and below 2 mg/$\ell$ with return sludge rate 0.5Q.Q.
The operational parameters and control strategies of a tertiary wastewater treatment process a biological filtration system were investigated. The biological filtration system consisted of a nitrification filter (Fiter 1) and a polishing filter with anoxic and aerobic parts (Filter 2). SS, T-C-BOD, and T-N in effluent were kept stable at less than 3, 5 mg/L, and 5 mgN/L, respectively, under a HRT in Filter (filter-bed) of 0.37~2.3 h. T-N at the outlet of Filter 2 were about 1~5 mgN/L under the condition of LV of 50~202 m/d. Methanol addition was controlled based on the COD/N ratio or McCarty's equation. Constant COD/N ratio control results in excess addition under large diurnal fluctuation of $NOx^--N$, and McCarty's equation can be used to add appropriate amount of methanol. Control of methanol addition by on-line nitrate measurement, control of aeration by on-line DO measurement, and control of backwashing by head loss measurement are successfully operated. These results proved that this process prove the easy-maintenance and cost-effectively treatment is attainable.
The artificial sewage was treated using a vertical flow zeolite-filled reed bed. The artificial sewage was fec into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load 314 L/$m^2$ \ulcorner day. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100 cm and the zeolite mixture was filled in the reed bed. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolites ; 0.5~1 mm and 1~3 mm in diameter. Annual average removal efficiency was CO$D_{Cr}$ 95.1%, T-N 49.5%, $NH{_4^+}$-N 99.4% and T-9 56.4%. T-N removal efficiency decreaced remarkably from 73 to 27% with the operating time. Most of T-P was adsorbed in the uper area of the reed bed. The major portion of adsorbed phosphorus was composed of Fe-, Ca- and reductant selubele Fe-P.
