  • The efficiencies of Gang-Byeon sewage treatment facilities, which are based on GPS-X modelling, were analysed and used to design recycle water treatment processes. The effluent of an aeration tank contained total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) of 1.8 mg/L with both C-1 and C-2 conditions, confirming that most ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3{^+}-N$) was converted to nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3{^-}-N$). The concentrations of $NH_3{^+}-N$ and $NO_3{^-}-N$ were found to be 222.5 and 227.2 mg/L, respectively, with C-1 conditions and 212.2 and 80.4 mg/L with C-2 conditions. Although C-2 conditions with higher organic matter yielded a slightly higher nitrogen removal efficiency, sufficient denitrification was not observed to meet the discharge standards. For the total nitrogen (T-N) removal efficiency, the final effluent concentrations of T-N were 293.8 mg/L with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of 2,500 mg/L, being about 1.5 times lower than that (445.3 mg/L) with BOD of 2,000 mg/L. Therefore, an external carbon source to increase the C/N ratio was required to get sufficient denitrification. During the winter period with temperature less than $10^{\circ}C$, the denitrification efficiency was dropped rapidly even with a high TKN concentration (1,500 mg/L). This indicates that unit reactors (anoxic/aerobic tanks) for winter need to be installed to increase the hydraulic retention time. Thus, to enhance nitrification and denitrification efficiencies, flexible operations with seasons are recommended for nitrification/anoxic/denitrification tanks.

  • A sewage was treated using a horizontal flow zeolite-filled reed bed. The sewage from the student dormitory of Changwon National University was fed into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of $314L/m^2$ day. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100 cm and the zeolite mixture was filled in the reed bed. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolite : $0.5{\sim}1mm$ and $1{\sim}3mm$ in diameter. Annual average removal efficiency was SS $88.5%,\;COD_{cr},\;86.1%,\;COD_{Mn}\;81.0%,\;T-N\;48.6%,\;NH_4^+-N\;97.1%$ and T-P 42.8%. T-N of effluent was mostly $NO_3^--N$ and the concentration of $NO_2^--N$ in effluent was lower than 0.1 mg/L. All removal efficiencies did not show a remarkable seasonal change.

  • This study was aimed to estimate removal efficiency(%) of BER(Biofilm-Electrode Reactor) and A.S(Activated Sludge) treatments. When were analyzed COD$_{Cr}$, NH$_3$-N and T-P by current density and reaction time, the results were as follows : 1) In BER treatment, the removal efficiency of COD$_{Cr}$ in domestic wastewater was 79-86% when current density was 2.39 mA/dm$2$(15mA)-3.98 mA/dm$^2$(25mA) and reaction time was 48 hr. 2) Removal efficiency of NH$_3$-N was 71-73% when current density was 2.39-3.98 mA/dm$^2$ and reaction time 48 hr. 3) When the reaction time was 48 hr removal efficiency(%) of BER treatment for COD$_{Cr}$, NH$_3$-N and T-P were more excellent than A.S. treatment. And then we prospect that was because activated microorganism colonies attached in biofilm on surface of electrode pannel. Therefore, In order to derive BER treatment efficiency(%) should establish optimum conditions of pH, temp., reaction time, current density and biochemical and electrochemical states.

  • The KIDEA process, occurred in single reactor, is operated by three consequential steps, i.e., aerobic, settling, and discharge while introducing wastewater into the bottom of reactor continuously. It could accomplish biological oxidation (BOD), nitrification, denitrification (T-N), phosphate removal (T-P), and solid separation (SS) through the operational mode mentioned. Especially, this system has removed the T-P by wasting certain amount of sludge at the end of aeration phase during 5~10 minutes and not returned the activated sludge into the reactor, that is, no RAS (Return Activated Sludge). All running mode and instrumentation were controlled by the PLC equipment automatically. In this study, therefore, we have evaluated T-P removal efficiency and moisture content (MC) performance under the different excess sludge wasting mode. T-P track study and MC with TS concentration were analyzed during aerobic and settling phase. It has revealed that there was no significant difference of released T-P concentration between the first case which waste the sludge at the end of aerobic phase (0.2mg/L) and the second case which waste the sludge at 40 min of settling phase (0.25mg/L). Also, dewatering duration and MC have decreased 1.7% when TS concentration was increased from 0.31% to 0.5% during aerobic condition. Hence, it has concluded the system performance was less influenced by the operation time change of PLC program.

  • Over the past 40 years, the public sector has continued to invest in the sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Korea. Currently, the domestic sewage treatment rate is over 90% with the enhancement of operating efficiency of the STPs, and water quality of major rivers has been continuously improved. However, COD and T-N indicators are stagnating or slightly worsening, and though advanced treatment facilities are installed in most of the STPs, there is a limit to the removal of nutrients. Since there are a lot of water pollution sources in the vicinity of the watershed because of high population density in Korea, it is essential to reduce the inflow of the nutrients in order to prevent the eutrophication of the rivers and lakes. While the effluent T-P standard in STPs has greatly strengthened since 2012, which results in the considerable investment for the improvement of treatment process in STPs for the last few years, it is necessary to strengthen the T-N standards, as the effluent standard of T-N has been maintained at 20 mg/L since 2002. In this study, based on the analysis of the effluent T-N standard status of major industrialized countries, and the domestic nitrogen load in public waters, the option of appropriate T-N standard level is reviewed, and the required investment costs and the effect of strengthening the standard are estimated.

  • In order to develop constructed wetlands for treating hydroponic wastewater in greenhouse, actual constructed wetlands were used the obtained optimum condition in previous study, and the removal rate of pollutant in the water according to 4 kinds connection method of piping such as system A (UP-UP stream), system B (UP-DOWN system), system C (DOWN-UP stream) and system D (DOWN-DOWN stream) were investigated. Removal rate of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) by system A (UP-UP stream) connection method in actual constructed wetlands were slightly higher than other systems. At the system A, the removal rate of BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P were 88, 77, 94, 54 and 94%, respectively. Under different hydroponic wastewater loading, the removal rates of pollutants were higher in the order of $75L\;m^{-2}day^{-1}{\fallingdotseq}150L\;m^{-2}day^{-1}$ $$\geq_-$$ $300L\;m^{-2}day^{-1}$. Therefore, optimum connection method was system A for treating hydroponic wastewater in greenhouse.

  • The purpose of this study is to ensure optimal operating conditions for improving the removal efficiency of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) that are the causative agents of eutrophication by utilizing functional media. The main ingredients of the functional media used in this study are Si, Al, and Fe, SiO2, KAlSiO3O8, Al2O2·2SiO2O, H3Al2Si2O9, Fe3O4O), and berylite. To identify the maximum efficiency of the filtration process, the processing efficiency experiment was carried out according to flow method, velocity, and thickness of residual media. The flow method carried out two experiments, 50 m/day, 100 m/day, 150 m/day, 200 m/day, 250 m/day, and 20 cm, 40 cm, 50 cm, 60 cm, 80 cm of lead depth. Experiments have shown that SS, T-N, and T-P all showed higher elimination efficiency of the upflow current conditions than the downflow current conditions, and that the processing efficiency of the linearity is the highest at SS 50 m/day, T-N 150 m/day and T-P 100 m/day. In addition, the analysis of the removal efficiency according to the residual thickness showed that SS, T-N, and T-P all showed the highest efficiency at 60 cm. In addition, the analysis of the removal efficiency according to the residual thickness showed that SS, T-N, and T-P all showed the highest efficiency at 60 cm. It is considered desirable to set the top-down flow conditions and residual thickness of 60 cm and adjust the velocity of the line according to the target media for removal.

  • In this study, the treatment of organic matters and nutrients like Nitrogen and Phosphorus with sequencing batch reactors (SBR) was conducted. The following conclusions can be summarized from the study. The influent BOD concentration was varied 19.6 to 40.0mg/L and the effluent was 3.0 to 14.8mg/L. The variations of BOD removal efficiency during the experimental period was $47.9{\sim}88.4%$ and the average was 80.8%. The average removal efficiency was stabilized with the passage of time. Also the COD concentration was flowed into as $12.2{\sim}32.0mg/L$ and the effluent concentration was varied 3.3 to 18.6 mg/L, and then the average COD removal efficiency was 57.3%(minimun 19.2% and maximum 78.6%). But fortunately, the COD removal efficiency was also stabilized as 70.2% after 79days. In the case of T-N, the influent concentration range was $7.53{\sim}14.99mg/L$ and the effluent concentration was 6.59mg/L(the average removal efficiency was 40.3%) until the first experiment time 79days. But after normalizing the system, it was 4.44mg/L (the average removal efficiency was 56.4%). Also the influent T-P concentration was varied from 0.77 to 1.91mg/L and the effluent concentration was $0.26{\sim}1.53mg/L$. The removal efficiency was varied from 5.3 to 71.7%. considerably, therefore the average removal efficiency was 42.6%. The reason was concluded that the sludge wasn't discharged for increasing MLSS concentration.

  • This study was performed to determine the effect of the influent flow distribution ratio and hydraulic retention time(HRT) on removal of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus when domestic sewage was treated by the advanced step aeration(ASA) process. Results of the experiment for the determination of the optimum influent flow distribution ratio between the anaerobic reactor and the anoxic reactor showed BOD removal efficiencies of above 92.0% at all influent flow distribution ratios from 9:1 to 4:6. The highest T-N removal efficiency was 82.6% at the influent flow distribution ratio of 6:4. On the other hand, the highest T-P removal efficiency was 67.8% at the influent flow distribution ratio of 9:1. Considering both the T-N and T-P removal efficiencies, the influent distribution ratio of 6:4 was considered the optimum. Results of the experiment for the determination of the optimum HRT at the optimum influent flow distribution ratio of 6:4 revealed BOD removal efficiencies better than 92.7% at all HRTs from 12hr down to 6hr. The highest T-N and T-P removal efficiency were 82.6% and 59.5%, respectively both at the HRT of 8hr. In conclusion, the optimum influent flow distribution ratio and HRT for treatment of domestic sewage by the ASA process were determined to be 6:4 and 8hr, respectively.
