  • The mode of fatigue failure is depended on the characteristics of the fatigue crack initiated and propagated from the weld toe and the weld root in the load-carrying fillet welded joints. The characteristics of fatigue crack are deeply affected by the geometry of fillet and the stress range. The purpose of this study is to investigate critical weld size and stress range in order to occur toe failure under pulsating tension loading in the load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints.

  • The essential tasks to operate the welding robot are the acquisition of the position and/or shape of the parent metal. For the seam tracking or the robot automation, many kinds of contact and non-contact sensors are used. Recently, the vision sensor is most popular. In this paper, the development of the system which measures the profile of the welding part is described. The total system will be assembled into a compact module which can be attached to the head of welding robot system. This system uses the line-type structured laser diode and the vision sensor It implemented Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) for the camera calibration as well as radial distortion correction. The three dimensional shape of the parent metal is obtained after simple linear transformation and therefore, the system operates in real time. Some experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the developed system.

  • Dissimilar joining of aluminum 6061-T6 alloy to aluminum 5083-O alloy was performed using friction-stir welding technique. The mechanical properties, hardness, macro- and micro-structure on dissimilar friction-stir-weld aluminium alloy were investigated. Mechanical properties of the weld mainly depend on which Al alloy is placed at the retreating sides of the rotating tool respectively during dissimilar friction-stir weld because the microstructure of stir zone was mainly composed of welded Al alloys of the retreating side. Onion ring pattern was observed like lamella structure stacked by each Al alloy in turn. It apparently results in defect-free weld zone that traverse speed was changed to 124 mm/min under conditions of tool rotation speed like 1250 rpm with 5 mm of tool's prove diameter, 4.5 mm of prove length, 20 mm of shoulder diameter, and $2^{\circ}$ of tilting angle. The 231 MPa of ultimate stress and the 121 MPa of yield point are obtained about the friction-stir-welded Al 6061-T6(AS) to Al 5083-O(RS).

A Study on the Effects of the Fatigue Life due to the Processing of the Butt Weld Specimens and the Fatigue Life Estimation due to the Weld Zone Profiles (철도 구조물용 맞대기 용접시편 가공에 의한 피로수명 영향 및 용접부 형상을 이용한 피로수명 예측 연구)

  • This study investigates the effects of the material properties and the fatigue behaviors in the SM490A material butt weld specimens due to the heat-treatment and the grinding. In the fatigue behavior, the heat-treatment affects the fatigue life. The S-N curves of both matrix specimen and butt weld specimen are reversed at some cycle by the existence or nonexistence of heat-treatment. The grinding on the bead makes the fatigue limit decrease in the all specimens. But the reinforcement removed, the fatigue limit increases at the high cycle. Also, this study investigates the fatigue life estimation by examining butt weld bead profiles. The butt weld beads, which are welded by semi-robot method, have non-uniform bead profiles described by $\theta,\;\rho$ and h. The stress concentration factors $K_t$, are changed by each different $\theta,\;\rho$ and h from 1.395 to 2.863. Hence, the sensitivity of $K_t$ is changed by each $\theta,\;\rho$ and h. As $\theta$ becomes lower and $\rho$ and h become higher, $K_t$ increases. The fatigue life can he estimated very closely for the AAY specimens without residual stress using only butt weld bead profiles. But, fur the AAN specimens with residual stress, the fatigue life must be estimated by considering both the weld bead profiles and the residual stress data.

A Study on the compensation margin on butt welding joint of large steel plates in shipyards (조선해양 구조물 주판의 Butt welding joint 수축에 관한 연구)

  • This paper examines the characteristics of butt welding joint shrinkage for shipbuilding and marine structures main plate. The shrinkage strain of butt welding joint which is caused by the process of heat input and cooling, results in the difference between dimensions of the actual parent metal and the dimensions of design. This, in turn, leads to poor quality in the production of ship blocks and reworking through period of correction brings about impediment on improvement of productivity. Through experiments on butt welding joint's shrinkage strain on large structures main plate, the deformation of welding residual stress in the form of I, Y, V was obtained. In addition, the results of experiments indicate that there is limited range of shrinkage in the range of 1 ~ 2 mm in 11t ~ 21.5t thickness and the effect of heat transfer of weld appears to be limited within 1000mm based on one side of seam line so there was limited impact of weight of parent metal on the shrinkage. Finally, it has been learned that Shrinkage margin needs to be applied differently based on groove phenomenon in the design phase in order to minimize shrinkage.

  • Welded built-up square tubes are manufactured by flare welding at the center of the column width for cold-formed L-shaped four-piece plates and improved composite effect of concrete and steel by vertical inner anchor. Also, the axial resistance of concrete is increased by the thinness of the steel column, and the composite effect of concrete and steel prevents the steel column from local buckling. In this study, we introduced a manufacturing method of built-up square column steel square concrete-filled tubular column with vertical inner anchor and superior structural performance of the square stub column verified by the structural test for 15 specimens with parameters of shape of tube (built-up square tube, general steel tube), width over thickness of the steel tube (B/t=50, 58, 67) and the strength of concrete (f'c=10MPa, 50MPa).

  • 선박이나 산업 플랜트에서 파이프 또는 탱크류의 맞대기 용접 시 안정적인 이면비드의 형성은 매우 중요하다. 대부분의 현장에서 파이프 맞대기 초층용접부의 안정적인 이면비드를 형성하기 위해 3mm의 루트갭을 띄우고 루트면이 없는 V-그루브에서 필러를 사용하는 수동 TIG용접을 주로 사용하고 있다. 수동 TIG용접은 고품질의 비드와 우수한 아크안정성, 그리고 용접인자의 제어가 쉽다는 장점이 있다. 그러나 수동 TIG용접은 용접속도가 10cpm정도로 느리기 때문에 GMAW에 비해 생산성이 낮고 작업자의 숙련도에 따라 품질이 변하게 된다. 본 연구에서는 높은 생산성과 기준갭 1.5mm에서 단차의 허용공차를 크게 하기 위해 루트면 3mm를 가지는 U-그루브의 설계를 하였으며, 두꺼운 루트면을 가지는 그루브에서 안정적인 이면비드를 형성시키기 위해 GMAW에서 아크 충격량에 대한 검토를 실시하였다. GMAW의 아크력이 용입에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 검토하기 위해 수냉되는 동판에 갭을 1.5mm 띄우고 동일한 용착량과 입열량에서 아크력만을 변화시켜 실험하였다. 또한, U-그루브의 루트부를 모델링하여 두께3t의 평판시편을 각각의 갭과 단차 조건에서 실험하였다. 이 때, 기준갭 1.5mm에서 갭에 의해 생기는 단면적을 기준 갭단면적, 갭이 증가함에 따라 증가되는 단면적을 추가 갭단면적, 갭이 감소함에 따라 감소하는 단면적을 감소 갭단면적으로 정의하였다. 용접 중 발생하는 추가, 감소 갭단면적에 대하여 용착량을 50%의 수준으로 증가, 감소 시켰다. 갭에 따라 아크력을 변경하여 실험을 실시하였고 이면비드의 형상을 확인 하였다. 마지막으로 평판 시편의 조건에서 안정적으로 이면비드가 형성된 조건을 pipe U-그루브에 적용하였다. 그 결과 동판에서 용착량과 입열량이 같음에도 불구하고 아크력이 증가함에 따라 용입이 깊어짐을 확인하였다. 또한. 3t 평판시편에서 아크력의 제어를 통해 큰 단차와 갭이 있을 때, 안정적인 이면비드를 얻을 수 있는 조건을 확립하였다. 마지막으로 pipe U-그루브에서 앞선 실험의 용접조건으로 갭과 단차의 변화에 대해 실험을 하였으나, 시험편의 두께차이에 의한 전도 열손실로 인해 이면비드의 형성이 어려웠고, 아크 충격량의 증가를 통해 이러한 문제를 해결하였다.

Evaluation of Design Formulae for T-joints on the Branch Plate and Hollow Steel Sections welded connections (지관 플레이트가 주관에 용접된 각형강관 접합부의 설계내력 평가에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes a design formulae that evaluates the design strength of T-joints made of cold-formed square hollow steel sections with longitudinal branch plate. The T-joints had a configuration that a branch member used to longitudinal plate to the main chord in the plane. This study focused on the branch plate T-joints governed by the main chord flange failure mode among the experimental results. Based on the test results of the longitudinal branch plate T-joint in the square hollow sections, the ultimate strength on the T-joints was defined as 1.5 times the load at 1% B the strength of joints that governed the serviceability in control for $16.7{\leq}2\gamma(B/T){\leq}31.3$ and $0.20{\leq}{\beta}(b1/B){\leq}0.75$. Existing yield line models for normal T-joints were investigated to be the main chord flange failure for the branch plate T-joint, and this proposal design formula was based on the theory of the yield line model. Finally, the value of the finite element method compared with the value of the test and theory for the T-joints verified the validity of the design formulae.

The Effects of Geometrical Shape and Post Weld Treatment on Welding Residual Stress Distribution of Weldment in Multi-pass Welded Pipe (다층용접배관의 용접부 잔류음력분포에 대한 기하학적형상과 용접후처리의 영향)

  • In this study, the residual stress fields of multi-pass welded were analyzed by FEA under various geometrical conditions. In order to estimate the effects of pipe geometries on residual stress distribution, welding processes of each model were performed under the same heat cycles. And then, the influence of cutting off the weld bead on the residual stress redistribution was also estimated. From the results, in the range of t/D=0.05, axial residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were linearly decreased with pipe diameter increase. On the other hand, hoop residual stresses were not influenced by them. And both axial and hoop residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were increased with pipe diameter increase. But, when t/D was smaller than 0.05, they were converged in the nearly same value. The maximum residual stresses were generated at around HAZ. It in therefore necessary to consider them in welding design, strength evaluation, and analysis of fracture characteristics.
