Blood pressure was predicted from photoplethysmography (PPG). To obtain PPG, backscattered light from a fingertip was measured and its waveform was analyzed. Systolic upstroke time and diastolic time in the pulse waveform were used as parameters to predict blood pressure. The experiment was carried out with five subjects on five different days. The systolic upstroke time had a correlation coefficient of -0.605 with respect to systolic blood pressure and the diastolic time had a correlation coefficients of -0.764 for diastolic pressure. This PPG method does not require an air-cuff installation on the arm and can predict blood pressure continuously. This simple LED/photo detector setup can be a good candidate for nonconstrained monitoring of blood pressure variations.
The body mass index, blood pressures and blood profiles of adults, who worked at three colleges in the Daejeon area, were evaluated for use in developing well-balanced menus at their workplace cafeterias and/or in creating nutrition education programs tailored to their health statuses. The data analyzed were from physical examinations performed in 2002 and in 2004 by the National Health Insurance Corporation. Overall, levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and serum cholesterol were lower in the 2004 samples than in those of 2002, but most samples in 2004 showed higher levels of SGOT. In 2002, statistical differences occured in the levels of blood pressure and serum cholesterol among age groups, but not in 2004. And in 2004, the older the age group, the higher the BMI. Among subjects in their twenties, three variables (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and serum cholesterol) showed statistical differences; this increased to four variables (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, blood glucose and serum cholesterol) among subjects in their thirties and to six variables (Hb, SGOT, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, blood glucose and serum cholesterol) among those in their forties, followed by a decline to four variables (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, Hb and serum cholesterol) among subjects in their fifties. In general, the results of physical examinations showed improvements in blood pressure and blood profiles in 2004 in comparison with results in 2002. The level of SGOT was the exception. Despite these improvements, of those employees who had physical examinations in 2004, $5.2\%$ had high blood glucose and $18.1\%$ hypertension, $27.9\%$ hypercholesterolemia, $8.3\%$ registered abnormal liver functions, and $31.3\%$ were classified as overweight and obese. Moreover, because some vulnerable blood profiles were found in the older age groups, various programs, including nutrition education, and/or development of healthful diets as well as excercise activities, may be needed within their workplaces.
To show the distribution and change of blood pressure according to age and to find factors affecting the level of blood pressure in primary school children, a follow-up study was conducted from 1986 to 1989 on 401 first grade children attending primary school in Kangwha County in 1986 and their parents. The blood pressure of the children was significantly increased according to age. The average annual increase was 1.8mmHg in systolic blood pressure and 2.5mmHg in diastolic blood pressure. The level of blood pressure did not show any significant difference in both sexes. Among children who were at or above the 80th percentile of blood pressure in the first grade, 35 and 30% of them have remained at the same level of systolic and diastolic blood pressure respectively in the fourth grade. But we could not find any significance in the tracking of blood pressure of children who were at or above the 90th percentile of blood pressure in the first grade. Weight and pulse rate were shown to be significant factors affecting systolic blood pressure in children of both sexes and mother's blood pressure and skinfold thickness were also affected systolic blood pressure in girls. The variables significantly affecting diastolic blood pressure were arm circumference and pulse rate for boys and height and pulse rate for girls.

Objective : The aim of this research was to investigate the depressive effect of acupuncture on Gangap-point and depletion on Taech'u-point in stroke patients. Methods : We measured the blood pressure of the patients who were admitted in the Oriental Medical hopital of Dongeui medical center from 21. Oct. 2001. to 20. Jan. 2002. 19 stroke patients were devided into two groups. 12 patients were treated by acupunctured on Gangap-point. The other 7 patients were treated by depletion on Taech'u-point. The activity of daily living was measured. If systolic blood pressure was over 160 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure was over 90 mmHg, acupunctured on Gangap-point and depletion on Taech'u-point were performed. Then 30minutes and 60minutes later, systolic, diastolic blood pressure and pulse rates were measured Results : After 30 minute treatment. both acupuncture on Gnagap-point and depletion on Taech'u-point significantly depressed the systolic blood pressure. After 60 minute treatment. only depletion on Taech'u-point were statistically significant in depressing the systolic blood pressure. Pulse rates were not significantly changed. Conclusion : These results suggest that depletion on Taech'u-point is more effective in depressing the systolic blood pressure than acupuncture on Gnagap-point.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of different dietary magnesium levels on systolic blood pressure and mineral distribution in normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats. In experiment 1, Normotensive rats(NTR ; Sprague Dawley, Female) were given diets containing regular magnesium (0.05% Mg ; rMg), marginal magnesium (0.01% Mg ; mMg) or marginal magnesium with stress(0.01% Mg + stress ; mMg + Str). In experiment 2, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR ; Kyoto Wistar, Femal) were fed diets containing regular magnesium(0.05% Mg ; rMg) and high magnesium (0.2% Mg ; hMG). The following were found ; 1) NTR treated with marginal magnesium with stress showed significant increase in systolic blood pressure (SBP). Marginal magnesium diet without stress resulted in nonsignificant increase in SBP. Significant in crease of blood pressure showed in NTR treated with marginal magnesium and stress was associated with decreased magnesium and increased calcium content in femur, reticulocyte and plasma. 2) In experiment 2, magnesium supplementation to SHR showed significant attenuation of their systolic blood pressure with increasing age. The attenuation of SBP showed in SHR was associated with increased magnesium, lowered calcium content in cardiac muscle and reticulocyte and decreased plasma sodium and aldosterone level.

The oscillometric method and Korotkoff sound method are the most common ways to measure the blood pressure. A new automatic blood pressure measurement device, which uses both oscillometric method and Korotkoff method, was developed. A pressure sensor was used to obtain cuff pressure and oscillation signal, and a microphone was used to detect Korotkoff sounds. Forty-five measurements from fifteen subjects were used for analysis. Correlation coefficients between the traditional auscultatory method and Korotkoff sound method were 0.9820 and 0.9721 for the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, respectively. Standard deviations of differences for the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were 1.3019 and 1.4495, respectively. Correspondingly, correlation coefficients between the traditional auscultatory method and oscillometric method using newly developed algorithm were 0.9651 and 0.9136 for the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, with the standard deviations of 1.42 and 1.73, respectively. The results showed that the newly developed algorithm for oscillometirc method provide accurate blood pressure values, moreover, Korotkoff sound method using microphone provides even higher accuracy. Therefore, a new automatic device which utilizes both oscillometric method and Korotkoff sound method would provide the accurate and reliable blood pressure values.

The purpose of this study is to develop a new cuff to improve the accuracy of blood pressure measurement, and to evaluate the performance of the developed system. We added a small bladder to the normal cuff, which we refer to as the double bladder system. The system that we developed for blood pressure measurement was based on the oscillometric method using a double bladder. This system was developed in order to reduce the oscillation noise and to amplify the signal of pure blood pressure. An oscillometric signal database based on the developed system was evaluated according to the ANSI/AAMI/SP10-1992 standard. The correlation coefficients between the cuff of the double bladder and the normal cuff were 0.98 for systolic pressure and 0.94 for diastolic pressure. The mean differences and the standard deviations between the average blood pressure obtained from a mercury manometer and that obtained from an automated sphygmomanometer were -0.7mmHg and 4.9mmHg for systolic, and -1.4mmHg and 5.4mmHg for diastolic pressure. We conclude that the proposed double bladder-based cuff system improves the accuracy of oscillometric blood pressure measurement. The developed system reduces the range of error by about $44{\sim}62%$ for systolic pressure and about $6{\sim}21%$ for diastolic pressure compared to the most recently developed, commercially available sphygmomanometers.
Objectives : Aim of this study was to investigate the antihypertensive effect of Korean Hwa-Acupuncture in hypertensive patients. Methods: We measured the blood pressure of 14 patients who were admitted in the Oriental Medical Clinic of Balance & Harmony Korean Acupuncture Association from 25th March 2006 to 21th July 2006. Eligible participants had systolic blood pressure ${\geq}120mmHg$ diastolic blood $pressure{\geq}80mmHg$. Blood pressure and pulse rate measurements were after the patient had been bed rest for at least 30 min. 10 times of Hwa-Acupuncture treatment over 3 weeks period were performed in the patiants. To evaluate the effect of the Hwa-Acupuncture, the blood pressure, pulse rate were measured 2 times before and after each acupuncture treatment for total of 10 times. Results : After 3 weeks, there were significant decreased in the systolic blood pressure(P<0.0297) and significant decreased in diastolic blood pressure(P<0.0223) treated by Hwa-Acupuncture 10 times but pulse rate was failed to decreased. The effects of Hwa-Acupuncture by measuring time on blood pressure were as follows : systolic blood pressure were deceased significantly from 1st to 10th visit (P<0.0207) but diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate was not decreased significantly. Conclusion : The results suggest that Hwa-Acupuncture is effective in decreasing the systolic blood pressure.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the measurements of blood pressure and time using manual and automatic blood pressure monitors in various road conditions to verify reliable blood pressure monitor in a moving ambulance. First, the manual blood pressure monitor palpation on unpaved roads showed a systolic pressure deviation of 5 mmHg. However, the automatic blood pressure monitor showed two measurement failures, one reading failure, and the measured systolic pressure deviation was 35 mmHg. The measurement time was 102 seconds faster on average than the automatic blood pressure monitor. Second, the palpation of the manual blood pressure monitor while going over speed bumps remained constant at 130 mmHg. However, the automatic blood pressure monitor had a systolic pressure deviation of 52 mmHg. The measurement time was 61 seconds faster on average than the automatic blood pressure monitor. Finally, the manual blood pressure monitor palpation on the sharp curve road showed a systolic pressure deviation of 5 mmHg. The automatic blood pressure monitor had one reading failure and the measured systolic pressure deviation was 21 mmHg. The measurement time showed that the manual blood pressure monitor was 101 seconds faster than the automatic blood pressure monitor. As a result, in a moving ambulance during an emergency, the manual blood pressure monitor showed high reliability because the blood pressure measurement was constant and the measurement time was short.
