  • In the context of total quality management, customer satisfaction is a key factor of success. Customer needs have been in the past described with rather vague words. In order to lead in the competitive market, product designers must be willing to interpret and reflect customer perceptions of a product on the design. The objective of this research is to develop a systematic process capable of linking customer preferences on a product to the design of product elements or specifications. The design process consists of multivariate statistical analyses, semantic differentials, and multidimensional scaling techniques under the framework of a methodology known as quality function deployment which is frequently used to construct a quality design process. The process being established is expected to serve as an effective means to communicate between the customer and the designer through proper representational schemes of design elements.

  • Porper ergonomic design of a passenger seat for the highspeed train is one of the essential design components that is directly related to passenger comfort. This study investigated a systematic approach to ergonomic passenger seat design and evaluation for the Korean highspeed train. To design an ergonomic passenger seat that improves passenger comfort, seat dimensions, Korean anthropometry, passenger activities in the coach, body postures and body contours were considered. The interrelationship of these factors was analyzed and seat dimensions were suggested. To properly evaluate the dimensions suggested, four prototypes were made and iteratively evaluated as a feedback procedure. This approach is expected to be applicable to the passenger seat design of other transport vehicles as well as a train.

  • Tight integration of product design and process planning in the early design stage would make bigger impact as wider spectrum of design and manufacturing alternatives can be pursued and evaluated. Thus the development of systematic computer-based supporting for this integration if desirable. For this integration and process planning in the early design stage, the systematic method to synthesize shape of part from functional requirements is crucial. This research presents the methods of functional decomposition from overall function of product and synthesizing shape of part based on functional relations extracted from functional decomposition using planetary gear transmission system as an example.

  • This paper present backstepping control approach for controling chaotic Liu system. The proposed method is a systematic design approach and consists in a recursive procedure that interlaces the choice of a Lyapunov Function. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, control laws are derived. We used the same technique to enable stabilization of chaotic motion to a steady state as well as tracking of any desired trajectory to be achieved in a systematic way. Numerical solution are shown to verify the result.

  • Since Industry 4.0, there is a growing interest in smart manufacturing across all industries. However, there are few studies on this topic in the garment industry despite the growing interest in implementing smart manufacturing. This paper presents the feasibility and essential considerations for implementing smart manufacturing in the garment industry. A systematic review analysis was conducted. Studies on garment manufacturing and smart manufacturing were searched separately in the Scopus database. Key technologies for each manufacturing were derived by keyword analysis. Studies on key technologies in each manufacturing were selected; in addition, bibliographic analysis and cluster analysis were conducted to understand the progress of technological development in the garment industry. In garment manufacturing, technology studies are rare as well as locally biased. In addition, there are technological gaps compared to other manufacturing. However, smart manufacturing studies are still in their infancy and the direction of garment manufacturing studies are toward smart manufacturing. More studies are needed to apply the key technologies of smart manufacturing to garment manufacturing. In this case, the progress of technology development, the difference in the industrial environment, and the level of implementation should be considered. Human components should be integrated into smart manufacturing systems in a labor-intensive garment manufacturing process.

  • Precise and systematic mapping techniques are required for mapping object-oriented artifacts into a platform-specific design. An effective and systematic mapping approach for an adequate platform or programming language in needed, because the characteristics of an initial design are independent from an implementation language and a platform. In this paper, we propose systematic and concrete methods, guidelines, and design patterns that can be used to design business operations at EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans) source code level. We show how various EJB mechanism can be utilized in designing business operations for beans. We believe these proposed methods can yield high-performance EJB applications that can also be well maintainable.

  • This paper introduces a method of constructing expert systems in an integrated environment for automatic software design. This integrated environment may be applicable from top-level system architecture design, data flow diagram design down to flow chart and coding. The system is integrated with three CASE tools, FSD (Functional Structure Diagram), DFD (Data Flow Diagram) and structured chart PAD (Problem Analysis Diagram), and respective expert systems with automatic design capability by reusing past design. The construction way of these expert systems is based on systematic acquisition of design knowledge stemmed from a systematic design work process of well-matured developers. The design knowledge is automatically acquired from respective documents and stored in the respective knowledge bases. By reusing it, a similar software system may be designed automatically. In order to develop these expert systems in a short period, these design knowledge is expressed by the unified frame structure, functions of th expert system units are partitioned mono-functions and then standardized components. As a result, the design cost of an expert system can be reduced to standard work procedures. Another feature of this paper is to introduce the integrated environment for automatic software design. This system features an essentially zero start-up cost for automatic design resulting in substantial saving of design man-hours in the resulting in substantial saving of design man-hours in the design life cycle, and the expected increase in software productivity after enough design experiences are accumulated.

  • As an efficient sampling design, stratified random sampling is often used when auxiliary information is available at the designing stage. Although one - per - stratum design is an efficient design that can be used when many auxiliary variables are available, it does not provide any unbiased variance estimator. With a two - per - stratum sample in which two elements are selected from each stratum, it is possible to obtain an unbiased variance estimator. However the loss of efficiency could be significant if any important stratification variable is missed. In this study, we investigated a sampling design that uses the all given auxiliary information and also permits an unbiased variance estimator suggested by Park and Fuller(2008). Through a simulation study, we compared several stratified random sampling and systematic sampling design. We also applied the proposed stratified sampling designs to 2007 youth panel data.
