  • This research deals with the non-linearities associated with impact and sliding for the rocking behavior of rigid block subjected to two dimensional excitation of horizontal and vertical direction. The non-linearities examined of impact between block and base: The transition of two governing rocking equations, the abrupt reduction in kinetic energy associated with impact. In this study, the rocking vibration system of two types are considered for several friction condition. One is the undamped rocking vibration system, disregarding energy dissipation at impact and the other is the damped rocking system, including energy dissipation at impact. The response analysis by non-dimensional rocking equation is carried out for the change of excitation amplitude. The chaos responses were discovered in the wide response region, particularly, in the case of high vertical excitation and their chaos characteristics are examined by Poincare map, power spectra and Lyapunov Exponent. The complex behavior of chaos response, in the phase space, were illustrated by Poincare map. Therefore, Poincare map will be a significant material in order to understand chaos of rocking system.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the vibration reduction capacities of a floating track system using a resilient rubber mat, and to compare the results with the track support stiffness and track impact factor of a conventional slab track system by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along a service line. The theoretically designed track support stiffness and track impact factor were compared with the measured track support stiffness and track impact factor for each tested track. The calculated and measured track support stiffness of the floating track system were found to be similar, and the floating track system satisfied the design specifications of the track impact factor. The overall vibration level and track support stiffness of the floating track system were thereupon found to be significantly lower than those of the conventional slab track system. The experimental results thus showed that the vibration reduction effect of the floating track system is greater than that of the conventional slab track.

  • The choice of economic development over environmental protection has been used to explain the decline in the quality of the environment in developing countries. The authors reject this explanation and propose a theory of negligence to explain this decline. They point to the advantages of environmental impact assessments in dealing with the problem of negligence and presents case studies from four countries. Organizational models for Environmental Impact Assessments in Developing Countries are proposed as useful policy measures.

  • The real-time modeling system, named AirWatch System, has been developed to evaluate the environmental impact from a large source. It consists of stack TMS (TeleMetering System) that measures the emission data from the source, AWS (Automatic Weather Station) that monitors the weather data and computer system with the dispersion modeling software. The modeling theories used in the system are Gaussian plume and puff models. The Gaussian plume model is used for the dispersion in the simple terrain with a point meteorological data while the puff model is for the dispersion in complex terrain with three dimensional wind fields. The AirWatch System predicts the impact of the emitted pollutants from the large source on the near-by environment on the real -time base and the alarm is issued to control the emission rate if the calculated concentrations exceed the modeling significance level.

  • This study comprehensively analyzed domestic and foreign literature related to the value and impact of libraries on education, social behavior and economic conditions, developed a survey to investigate the librarians' perception of the libraries' value and impact, and accordingly investigated the perception of librarians according to the types of libraries in which they worked, public versus university. The results showed that the impact is greatest on education and literacy with a mean score of 3.98, followed by their social impact with 3.67 and their economic impact with 3.46. When subordinate items were analyzed it was found that the librarians perceived that the role that libraries are playing in the education area is expanding and their impact on reading and literacy is becoming greater and greater. Libraries were viewed as essential elements for education and the education system. When the difference in perception related to the impact of libraries was compared by types of libraries, the librarians in public libraries tended to rate their facilities higher than the librarians working in universities on most of the items.

  • This paper assessed environmental impacts of marine sand mining on coastal areas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of Korea, and diagnosed problems of the related assessment statements for suggesting key assessment items (scoping) and system improvement. To mitigate conflicts and environmental impacts caused by large-scale, concentrated sand mining, we suggest it is critical to promote sustainable and eco-friendly utilization of marine resources while listening opinions from various stakeholders and analyzing alternative plans. Especially, it should be mandatory as a scoping item to provide verifiable data on the amount of sand, potential and accumulative impacts by mining, and key assessment items (e.g. erosion and sedimentation by submarine topography, benthic change, spreading of suspended solids, water pollution, grain-size change, and impact on fisheries resources). We also suggest that postassessment and monitoring should be improved to enable tracking of environmental impacts caused by sand mining through seasonal monitoring together with intermittent short-term surveys. In addition, effective measures to mitigate the impacts is also essential. As repeated sand mining at large-scale can damage marine ecosystems by long-term accumulated impacts, we suggest that assessment systems and regulatory policies should be developed and established, especially for ensuring reliability of assessment and review on selected major sandmining projects.

  • Accident statistics shows that the portion of fatal occupant injuries due to side impacts is considerably high. The side impact usually leads to a severe intrusion of side structure into the passenger compartment. Furthermore, the safety zone for the side impact is relatively small compared to the front impact. Those kinds of physics for side impact frequently result in a fatal injury for the occupant. Therefore, NHTSA and EEVC are trying to intensify the regulation for the occupant protection against side impact. Both the regulation and recent market trends are asking for an installation of side airbag. There are several types of system configuration for side impact sensing. In this paper, we adopt the acceleration-based remote sensing method for the side airbag control system. We mainly focus on the development of hardware and crash discrimination algorithm of remote sensing unit. The crash discrimination algorithm needs fast decision of airbag firing especially for high-speed side impact such as FMVSS 214 and EEVC tests. It is also required to distinguish between low-speed fire and no-fire events. The algorithm should have a sufficient safety margin against any misuse situation such as hammer blow, door slam, etc. This paper introduces several firing criteria such as acceleration. velocity and energy criteria that use physical value proportional to crash severity. We have made a simulation program by using Matlab/Simulink to implement the proposed algorithm. We have conducted an algorithm calibration by using real crash data for 2,500cc vehicle. The crash performance obtained by the simulation was verified through a pulse injection method. It turned out that the results satisfied the system requirements well.

  • There are many researches related to a simulated shooting training system for replacing the real military and police shooting training. In this paper, we propose the point of impact from a simulated shooting target based on image processing instead of using a sensor based approach. The point of impact is extracted by analyzing the image extracted from the camera on the muzzle of a gun. The final shooting result is calculated by mapping the target and the coordinates of the point of impact. The recognition system is divided into recognizing the projection zone, extracting the point of impact on the projection zone, and calculating the shooting result from the point of impact. We find the vertices of the projection zone after converting the captured image to the binary image and extract the point of impact in it. We present the extracting process step by step and provide experiments to validate the results. The experiments show that exact vertices of the projection area and the point of impact are found and a conversion result for the final result is shown on the interface.

  • As an effort to maximize the immersiveness of user experience in virtual reality, there have been constant efforts to provide a user with tactile sensation by providing haptic feedback. Most of the haptic feedback methods, however, can create only limited or unrealistic haptic sensations since they utilize affordable actuators such as a vibrotactile actuator. When it comes to martial arts training or a game, the limitation of such haptic feedback is apparent due to the significant difference between the physical impact of hitting an object and the sensation departed from a vibrotactile actuator. Noting this, we proposed a haptic impact system that can create a haptic impact when the user hits a virtual object with the fist. The haptic interface uses a quick-return mechanism that can deliver haptic impact feedback to a user's fist. The realism of the haptic impact was evaluated by conducting a human-subject experiment. The results indicate a significant effect of haptic feedback on the realism of the virtual impact.
