  • In this paper, we present a algebraic technique for computing system reliability for complex system. The method was originally developed as an aid to fault tree analysis but it applies to general problems of reliability assessment. A success expression which directly gives the reliability expression is formed and simplified by the procedure. Several algorithms and examples are illustrated.

  • Tethers of Tension Leg Platform (TLP) are a series structural system where fatigue is the principal mode of failure. The present study is devoted to the fatigue and fatigue fracture reliability study of these tethers. For this purpose, two limit state functions have been derived. These limit state functions are based on S-N curve and fracture mechanics approaches. A detailed methodology for the reliability analysis has then been presented. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to study the influence of various random variables on tether reliability. The design point, important for probabilistic design, is located on the failure surface. Effect of wind, water depth, service life and number of welded joints are investigated. The effect of uncertainties in various random variables on tether fatigue reliability is highlighted.

  • A flight control system for high reliability consists of complicated redundant structures. This redundancy can improve fault tolerant characteristics of system. So, a system manager is able to choose a suitable structure using analyzed quantitative data of various redundant structures. In this paper, we analyzed redundant characteristics and reliability. We defined necessary mathematical model for analysis tool. Then we compose a reliability block diagram analysis tool applying such defined analysis model using Simulink blocks. Finally we verified the analysis tool using a commercial tool.

  • Critical systems with high reliability feature fault tolerant redundancy. Conventional analytical reliability analysis methods that use the Reliability Block Diagram do not adequately reflect characteristics of the redundancy management system and are not suitable for this applications. This paper uses Monte-Carlo method to calculate the reliability of complicated redundant systems. The method was first validated for cases with analytical solutions. Then, the tool was successfully applied to analyze reliability of the flight control systems with a voter as redundancy management system.

  • Korea Railroad Research Institute developed the driverless rubber-tired Korean-AGT system from 1999 to 2005 and has done its performance and reliability tests on the test line at Gyeongsan-city. We made the reliability management program to control required the RAMS(reliability, availability, maintainability & safety) of the K-AGT system. Therefore, we demonstrated the development and application of Reliability DB program. The main functions of K-AGT Reliability DB program manages failures and maintenance data systematically from the test line through test period and provides various analysis results based on the inputted data.

  • This study presents a methodology for the system reliability analysis of cracked structures with random material properties, which are modeled as random fields, and crack geometry under random static loads. The finite element method provides the computational framework to obtain the stress intensity solutions, and the first-order reliability method provides the basis for modeling and analysis of uncertainties. The ultimate structural system reliability is effectively evaluated by the stable configuration approach. Numerical examples are given for the case of random fracture toughness and load.

  • Electric railway system consists of traction power system, rolling stock, track, and overhead line system. A railway substation transforms the electric power transmitted from a electric power company and supply it to the railway power system for the operation of traction system.. It is very important to prevent a possible accident and keep the security of electric power system. This paper proposes a reliability analysis of AC railway substation by using Fault Tree Analysis(FTA). Failure rates of each equipment of railway substation are used to evaluate the reliability of railway substation. The analyzed results can be used to improve the system reliability. FTA is performed by the commercialized program of Relex(Ver. 7.7).

Analyses of Reliability for a Typical Solar Heating System (태양열 난방시설 신뢰도 평가 에 관한 연구)

  • In the present work a time-dependent reliability model for a typical solar domestic hot water and heating system is developed using the method of Fault Tree Analysis and existing mathematical techniques. The reference system used in this analysis is a typical solar heating system. The system reliability structure has been identified with the aid of Fault Tree methods. In addition, a simulation of the solar system reliability has been performed employing the Monte Carlo method. In the computer simulation, failure rate data such as WASH-1400, MIL-HDBK-217B, and Green and Bourne are used as input data. These results show that the developed reliability model is capable of expressing the primary failure phenomena of the solar heating and domestic hot water system.

  • In executing the large scale national project, such as development of space launch vehicle, it is most important to guarantee the technological reliability. However the reliability analysis of launch vehicle is different from other mass product goods because of the limitation of budget and number of tests. In this study, the reliability analysis technique of the propulsion system, which is one of the major sub-systems of launch vehicle is illustrated and applied to the liquid rocket engine of KSR-III.
