The Development of the Transmission Marginal Loss Factors with Consideration of the Reactive Power and its Application to Energy Spot Market (무효전력을 고려한 한계송전손실계수 산정 방법론 개발 및 현물시장에의 적용)

  • This paper presents a new approach for evaluating the transmission marginal loss factors (MLFs) considering the reactive power. Generally, MLFs are represented as the sensitivity of transmission losses, which is computed from the change of the generation at reference bus by the change of the load at the arbitrary bus-i. The conventional evaluation method for MLFs uses the only H matrix, which is a part of jacobian matrix. Therefore, the MLFs computed by the existing method, don't consider the effect of the reactive power, although the transmission losses are a function of the reactive power as well as the active power. To compensate the limits of the existing method for evaluating MLFs, the power factor at the bus-i is introduced for reflecting the effect of the reactive power in the evaluation method of the MLFs. Also, MLFs calculated by the developed method are applied to energy spot markets to reflect the impacts of reactive power. This method is tested with the sample system with 5-bus, and analyzed how much MLFs have an effect on the bidding/offer price, market clearing price(MCP), and settlement in the competitive energy spot market. This paper compared the results of MLFs calculated by the existing and proposed method for the IEEE 14-bus system, and the KEPCO system.

  • Electric power restructuring offers a major change to the vertically integrated utility monopoly. Deregulation has had a great impact on the electric power industry in various countries. Bidding competition is one of the main transaction approaches after deregulation. The energy trading levels between market participants is largely dependent on the short-term price forecasts. This paper presents the short-term System Marginal Price (SMP) forecasting implementation using backpropagation Neural Network in competitive electricity market. Demand and SMP that supplied from Korea Power Exchange (KPX) are used by a input data and then predict SMP. It needs to analysis the input data for accurate prediction.

  • This paper presents an hour-ahead System Marginal Price (SMP) forecasting framework based on a neural network. Recently, the deregulation in power industries has impacted on the power system operational problems. The bidding strategy of market participants in energy market is highly dependent on the short-term price levels. Therefore, short-term SMP forecasting is a very important issue to market participants to maximize their profits. and to market operator who may wish to operate the electricity market in a stable sense. The proposed hybrid neural network is composed of tow parts. First part of this scheme is pattern classification to input data using Kohonen Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and the second part is SMP forecasting using back-propagation neural network that has three layers. This paper compares the forecasting results using classified input data and unclassified input data. The proposed technique is trained, validated and tested with historical date of Korea Power Exchange (KPX) in 2002.

  • As the competitive market system has been introduced to the electrical power trade, the priority concern would be that the price of electrical power should be reasonable. It is because, when this rule is solid, we can avoid the distortion of competition and assure the greater efficiency in management. LMP(Locational Marginal Price) means marginal price at each bus. This components consist of energy, loss and congestion cost. At this point, the LMP result that is calculated by traditional model is changeable by the location of the slack and can not be used in bilateral Transaction. This paper proposed algorithm is proved its rationality and credibility by comparing the result of the simulation of virtual 6_bus system that is calculated by traditional method, and showed that the LMP components are changed according to the Transaction Strategy. Furthermore, It shows the effect of additional congestion cost on the transmission line that has bottle neck frequently by simulation.

  • Since the SMP(System Marginal Price) is a vital factor to the market participants who intend to maximize the their profit and to the ISO(Independent System Operator) who wish to operate the electricity market in a stable sense, the short-term marginal price forecasting should be performed correctly. This paper presents a methodology of a day-ahead SMP forecasting using ARIMA(Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) based on the Time Series. And also we suggested a correction algorithm to minimize the forecasting error in order to improve efficiency and accuracy of the SMP forecasting. To show the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method, the numerical studies have been performed using Historical data of SMP in 2004 published by KPX(Korea Power Exchange).

  • Islands that is far away from onshore have used internal-combustion engine driving alternators to secure electric power. However, with Paris convention on climate change, there is a growing interest in eco-friendly energy independent island that replaces microgrid(MG) consisting of photovoltaic, wind power, and energy storage system with alternators for internal combustion engines. And also, national emission trading has been implemented, and the price of certified emission reduction(CER) has a influence on system marginal price(SMP). Because, the low cost generation source decides SMP when CER price is low, while the more expensive generation source decides SMP when CER price is high. Therefore, the increasing of CER price has a strong influence on the annualized return of MG independent power producer. Moreover, the fixed RPS price is implemented from 2017, which the increasing of CER price under the fixed RPS price or the variable RPS price affects annualized return differently. In this paper, the annualized return according to CER price is analyzed for large, middle, and small scaled islands, the effect of CER price on the annualized return was confirmed.

  • Because Cost Based Pool(CBP) has any locational signals for electricity price, there are any locational incentives for construction of new power plant high efficient. in case of Korean electricity power market, this incentives are very important to reduce loss and congestion. This Paper represent the effect of MLF(Marginal Loss Factor) as locational price signal in short period. we investigate mathematically loss reduced effect of MLF and prove to reduce transmission loss using 3bus test system.

Electricity Cost Variations subject to Nuclear and Renewable Power Portions (원자력 및 신재생에너지 발전비율에 따른 전력단가의 변화)

  • Various pros and cons are raised as to the nuclear and renewable power portions. In order to generate scientific, objective, and comparative data, this study reviewed energy policies of some countries and derived 34 possible energy mix scenarios depending on the nuclear portion, the renewable portion and the make-up power sources. For each scenario, the unit electricity cost was calculated using the BLMP (Base Load Marginal Price) and SMP (System Marginal Price) methodology, which is currently adopted in Korean electricity market. The unit electricity cost for the current energy mix was 22.18 Won/kWh and those fir other scenarios spreaded from 19.74 to 164.07 Won/kWh excluding the transmission costs and profits of the electric utility companies. Generally, the increased nuclear power portion leads reduction in the unit electricity cost while the trend is reversed in the renewable power portion. Notable observation is that when the renewable power portion exceeds 20%, as the scenario cannot enjoy the benefit of cheap base load, the unit electricity cost at low demand time zone is increased.

  • Based on the hedonic pricing method, this paper investigates the effect of air quality on the apartment price in Seoul. The empirical results show that both the structural variables such as years of construction, heating system, and size of apartment complex and accessability variables such as distances to subway station and parks provide statistically significant effects on the price of apartment, Especially, the dendity of sulfurous acid gas ($SO_2$) and ozone ($O_3$) in the air, indicating air quality, negatively affect the price of apartment, This implies that as the condition of air quality to become worse, apartment price decreases, Therefore, when the degree of aversion of apartment residents against the air pollution affects the formation of apartment's market price, the MWPT(Marginal Willingness to Pay) in order to improve the air quality 10% has been estimated as 36,000~39,000Won per month.

The Impact of Nuclear Power Generation on Wholesale Electricity Market Price (원자력발전이 전력가격에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Nuclear power generation is a major power source which accounts for more than 30% of domestic electricity generation. Electricity market needs to secure stability of base load. This study aimed at analyzing relationships between nuclear power generation and wholesale electricity price (SMP: System Marginal Price) in Korea. For this we conducted ARDL(Autoregressive Distributed Lag) approach and Granger causality test. We found that in terms of total effects nuclear power supply had a positive relationship with SMP while nuclear capacity had a negative relationship with SMP. There is a unidirectional Granger causality from nuclear power supply to SMP while the reverse was not. Nuclear power is closely related to SMP and provides useful information for decision making.
