A turbopump system composed of two pumps and one turbine is considered. The turbine composed of a nozzle and a rotor is used to drive the pumps while gas passes through the nozzle and potential energy is converted to kinetic energy, which forces the rotor blades to spin. In this study, an aerodynamic design of turbine system is investigated with some pre-determined design requirements (i.e., pressure ratio, rotational speed, required power, etc.) following Liquid Rocket Engine (L.R.E.) system specifications. For simplicity of turbine system, impulse-type rotor blades for open-type L.R.E. have been chosen. Usually, the open-type turbine system requires low mass flow-rate compared to close-type system. In this study, a partial admission nozzle is adopted to maximize the efficiency of the open-type turbine system. A design methodology of turbine system was introduced. Especially, partial admission nozzle was designed by means of simple empirical correlations between efficiency and configuration of the nozzle. Finally, a turbine system design is presented for a 10 ton thrust level of L.R.E.
One of the applicable methods for the stabilization of soil walls is the nailing system which consists of tensile struts. The stability and safety of soil nail wall systems are influenced by the geometrical parameters of the nailing system. Generally, the determination of nailing parameters in order to achieve optimal performance of the nailing system for the safety of soil walls is defined in the framework of optimization problems. Also, according to the various uncertainty in the mechanical parameters of soil structures, it is necessary to evaluate the reliability of the system as a probabilistic problem. In this paper, the optimal design of the nailing system is carried out in deterministic and probabilistic cases using meta-heuristic and reliability-based design optimization methods. The colliding body optimization algorithm and first-order reliability method are used for optimization and reliability analysis problems, respectively. The objective function is defined based on the total cost of nails and safety factors and reliability index are selected as constraints. The mechanical properties of the nailing system are selected as design variables and the mechanical properties of the soil are selected as random variables. The results show that the reliability of the optimally designed soil nail system is very sensitive to uncertainty in soil mechanical parameters. Also, the design results are affected by uncertainties in soil mechanical parameters due to the values of safety factors. Reliability-based design optimization results show that a nailing system can be designed for the expected level of reliability and failure probability.
The fatigue-induced sequential failure of a structure having structural redundancy requires system-level analysis to account for stress redistribution. System reliability-based design optimization (SRBDO) for preventing fatigue-initiated structural failure is numerically costly owing to the inclusion of probabilistic constraints. This study incorporates the Branch-and-Bound method employing system reliability Bounds (termed the B3 method), a failure-path structural system reliability analysis approach, with a metaheuristic optimization algorithm, namely grey wolf optimization (GWO), to obtain the optimal design of structures under fatigue-induced system failure. To further improve the efficiency of this new optimization framework, an additional bounding rule is proposed in the context of SRBDO against fatigue using the B3 method. To demonstrate the proposed method, it is applied to complex problems, a multilayer Daniels system and a three-dimensional tripod jacket structure. The system failure probability of the optimal design is confirmed to be below the target threshold and verified using Monte Carlo simulation. At earlier stages of the optimization, a smaller number of limit-state function evaluation is required, which increases the efficiency. In addition, the proposed method can allocate limited materials throughout the structure optimally so that the optimally-designed structure has a relatively large number of failure paths with similar failure probability.
The cross-flow fans have been widely used to constitute the air moving systems in many air-ventilating and air-conditioning units. The cross-flow fan system has many design parameters which have crucial influence on the performance and the noise characteristics of the units. As a result there are many difficulties in the design stage of the system and the general design guide has not been sufficiently established yet. This study presents the experimental results of the parametric investigation of some chosen design parameters which are directly related to the shape of the stabilizer the profile of the scroll casing and the diffusion angle of the flow exit. The results are expressed in terms of the fan performance and the specific sound pressure level characteristics. Some parameters have been found to have crucial effects on the system performance/noise characteristics and should be considered with care in the design stage.
This paper proposes a control board that includes PNP function with extensibility and effective allocation of allocation. The object of study is to overcome limited extensity of old systems and it is to reuse the system. The system recognizes automatic subsystem from application of main system with board level that is using hardware and software co-design method. The system has both function of main-board and sub-board. So one system can operate simultaneously such as module of alien system. This system has advantages that are fast execution, according as process functional partition to hardware/ software co-design and board size is reduced as well as offer extensity of development system. We obtained good result with control board for existent Z-80 training kit.
Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is a complex and large system in which there are many subsystems, interfaces, functions and demanding performance requirements. Because many contractors participate in the development, it is necessary to apply methods of sharing common objectives and communicating effectively among all of the stakeholders. This paper shows not only the methodology and the results of computer-aided systems engineering including requirement management, functional analysis and architecting LRT system, but also propose a tool to help manage a project by linking WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), work organization and PBS (Product Breakdown Structure). The application of computer-aided tool RDD-100 provides the capability to model product design knowledge and decisions about important issues such as architecting the top-level system. The product design knowledge will be essential in integrating the following life-cycle phase activities over the life of the LRT system. Additionally, when a new generation train system is required, the reuse of the database can increase the system design productivity and effectiveness significantly.

Implemented for the cylindrical-coordinate type industrial robot with 5 degrees of freedom, the control unit constructed for the study consists of (i) z-80 .mu.p-based .mu.-computer control system (ii) Teach-Box for work command, and (iii) various softwares for generating signals for servo driving unit and operating the robot as playback-type. Softwares are developed by using high level Basic Language and low level z-80 Assembly Language for ease of programming and speed of program execution. To show the effectiveness, and example is included.
Features are generic shapes with which engineers associate certain attributes and knowledge useful in reasoning about the product. Feature-based modeling systems support additional levels of information beyond those available in geometric modelers. The objective of this study is to develop a PC level feature-based modeling system which explicitly represents dimensions of the part. The feature-based modeler retains all the benefits of traditional B-rep. solid models, and represents the dimensions at a high level of a abstraction so that dimension driven geometry can be achieved.
Modern earthquake-resistant design aims to isolate architectural precast concrete panels from the structural system so as to reduce the interaction with the supporting structure and hence minimize damage. The present study seeks to maximize the cladding-structure interaction by developing an energy-dissipating cladding system (EDCS) that is capable of functioning both as a structural brace, as well as a source of energy dissipation. The EDCS is designed to provide added stiffness and damping to buildings with steel moment resisting frames with the goal of favorably modifying the building response to earthquake-induced forces without demanding any inelastic action and ductility from the basic lateral force resisting system. Because many modern building facades typically have continuous and large openings on top of the precast cladding panels at each floor level for window system, the present study focuses on spandrel type precast concrete cladding panel. The preliminary design of the EDCS was based on existing guidelines and research data on architectural precast concrete cladding and supplemental energy dissipation devices. For the component-level study, the preliminary design was validated and further refined based on the results of nonlinear finite element analyses. The stiffness and strength characteristics of the EDCS were established from a series of nonlinear finite element analyses and are discussed in detail in this paper.

The use of Buckling Restrained Braces (BRB) for enhancing the performance of the buildings is gaining wider acceptance. This paper presents the first application of these devices in a major high-rise building in the Philippines. A 50-storey residential reinforced concrete building tower, with ductile core wall, with BRB system is investigated. The detailed modeling and design procedure of buckling restrained brace system is presented for the optimal design against the two distinct levels of earthquake ground motions; serviceable behavior for frequent earthquakes and very low probability of collapse under extremely rare earthquakes. The stiffness and strength of the buckling restrained brace system are adjusted to optimize the performance of the structural system under different levels of earthquakes. Response spectrum analysis is conducted for Design Basis Earthquake level and Service level, while nonlinear time history analysis is performed for the most credible earthquake. The case study results show the effectiveness of buckling restrained braces.
