Baseflow which is one of the unmeasurable components of streamflow and slowly flows through underground is important for water resource management. Despite various separation methods from researches preceded, it is difficult to find a significant separation method for baseflow separation. This study applied the MRC method and developed the improved approach to separate baseflow from total streamflow hydrograph. Previous researchers utilized the whole streamflow data of study period at once to derive synthetic MRCs causing unreliable results. This study has been proceeded with total nine areas with gauging stations. Each three areas are selected from 3 domestic major watersheds. Tool for drawing MRC had been used to draw MRCs of each area. First, synthetic MRC for whole period and two other MRCs were drawn following two different criteria. Two criteria were set by different conditions, one is flow condition and the other is seasonality. The whole streamflow was classified according to seasonality and flow conditions, and MRCs had been drawn with a specialized program. The MRCs for flow conditions had low R2 and similar trend to recession segments. On the other hand, the seasonal MRCs were eligible for the baseflow separation that properly reflects the seasonal variability of baseflow. Comparing two methods of assuming MRC for baseflow separation, seasonal MRC was more effective for relieving overestimating tendency of synthetic MRC. Flow condition MRCs had a large distribution of the flow and this means accurate MRC could not be found. Baseflow separation using seasonal MRC is showing more reliability than the other one, however if certain technique added up to the flow condition MRC method to stabilize distribution of the streamflow, the flow conditions method could secure reliability as much as seasonal MRC method.
The sigma naught (${\sigma}^0$) equation is essential to calculate geo-physical properties from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images for the applications such as ground target identification, surface classification, sea wind speed calculation, and soil moisture estimation. In this paper, we are suggesting new Kompsat-5 (K5) Radar Cross Section (RCS) and ${\sigma}^0$ equations reflecting the final SAR processor update and absolute radiometric calibration in order to increase the application of K5 SAR images. Firstly, we analyzed the accuracy of the K5 RCS equation by using trihedral corner reflectors installed in the Kompsat calibration site in Mongolia. The average difference between the calculated values using RCS equation and the measured values with K5 SAR processor was about $0.2dBm^2$ for Spotlight and Stripmap imaging modes. In addition, the verification of the K5 ${\sigma}^0$ equation was carried out using the TerraSAR-X (TSX) and Sentinel-1A (S-1A) SAR images over Amazon rainforest, where the backscattering characteristics are not significantly affected by the seasonal change. The calculated ${\sigma}^0$ difference between K5 and TSX/S-1A was less than 0.6 dB. Considering the K5 absolute radiometric accuracy requirement, which is 2.0 dB ($1{\sigma}$), the average difference of $0.2dBm^2$ for RCS equation and the maximum difference of 0.6 dB for ${\sigma}^0$ equation show that the accuracies of the suggested equations are relatively high. In the future, the validity of the suggested RCS and ${\sigma}^0$ equations is expected to be verified through the application such as sea wind speed calculation, where quantitative analysis is possible.
With the advancement of big data processing technology using cloud platforms, access, processing, and analysis of large-volume data such as satellite imagery have recently been significantly improved. In this study, the Change Detection Method, a relatively simple technique for retrieving soil moisture, was applied to the backscattering coefficient values of pre-processed Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery product based on Google Earth Engine (GEE), one of those platforms, to estimate the surface soil moisture for six observatories within the Yongdam Dam watershed in South Korea for the period of 2015 to 2023, as well as the watershed average. Subsequently, a correlation analysis was conducted between the estimated values and actual measurements, along with an examination of the applicability of GEE. The results revealed that the surface soil moisture estimated for small areas within the soil moisture observatories of the watershed exhibited low correlations ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 for both VH and VV polarizations, likely due to the inherent measurement accuracy of the SAR satellite imagery and variations in data characteristics. However, the surface soil moisture average, which was derived by extracting the average SAR backscattering coefficient values for the entire watershed area and applying moving averages to mitigate data uncertainties and variability, exhibited significantly improved results at the level of 0.5. The results obtained from estimating soil moisture using GEE demonstrate its utility despite limitations in directly conducting desired analyses due to preprocessed SAR data. However, the efficient processing of extensive satellite imagery data allows for the estimation and evaluation of soil moisture over broad ranges, such as long-term watershed averages. This highlights the effectiveness of GEE in handling vast satellite imagery datasets to assess soil moisture. Based on this, it is anticipated that GEE can be effectively utilized to assess long-term variations of soil moisture average in major dam watersheds, in conjunction with soil moisture observation data from various locations across the country in the future.
In line with future changes in the marine environment, Aids to Navigation has been used in various fields and their use is increasing. The term "Aids to Navigation" means an aid to navigation prescribed by Ordinance of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries which shows navigating ships the position and direction of the ships, position of obstacles, etc. through lights, shapes, colors, sound, radio waves, etc. Also now the use of Aids to Navigation is transforming into a means of identifying and recording the marine weather environment by mounting various sensors and cameras. However, Aids to Navigation are mainly lost due to collisions with ships, and in particular, safety accidents occur because of poor observation visibility due to sea fog. The inflow of sea fog poses risks to ports and sea transportation, and it is not easy to predict sea fog because of the large difference in the possibility of occurrence depending on time and region. In addition, it is difficult to manage individually due to the features of Aids to Navigation distributed throughout the sea. To solve this problem, this paper aims to identify the marine weather environment by estimating sea fog level approximately with images taken by cameras mounted on Aids to Navigation and to resolve safety accidents caused by weather. Instead of optical and temperature sensors that are difficult to install and expensive to measure sea fog level, sea fog level is measured through the use of general images of cameras mounted on Aids to Navigation. Furthermore, as a prior study for real-time sea fog level estimation in various seas, the sea fog level criteria are presented using the Haze Model and Dark Channel Prior. A specific threshold value is set in the image through Dark Channel Prior(DCP), and based on this, the number of pixels without sea fog is found in the entire image to estimate the sea fog level. Experimental results demonstrate the possibility of estimating the sea fog level using synthetic haze image dataset and real haze image dataset.

Numerical simulation technique has been developed to calculate microwave backscattering from water surface. The simulation plays a role of a substitute for experiments. Validation of the simulation was shown by comparing with experimental results. Water area observations by microwave radar have been simulated to evaluate algorithms and systems. Furthermore, the simulation can be used to understand microwave scattering mechanism on the water surface. The simulation has applied to the various methods for water area observations, and the utilizations of the simulation are introduced in this paper. In the case of fixed radar, we show following examples, 1. Radar image with a pulse Doppler radar, 2. Effect of microwave irradiation width and 3. River observation (Water level observation). In addition, another application (4.Synthetic aperture radar image) is also described. The details of the applications are as follows. 1. Radar image with a pulse Doppler radar: A new system for the sea surface observation is suggested by the simulation. A pulse Doppler radar is assumed to obtain radar images that display amplitude and frequency modulation of backscattered microwaves. The simulation results show that the radar images of the frequency modulation is useful to measure sea surface waves. 2. Effect of microwave irradiation width: It is reported (Rheem[2008]) that microwave irradiation width on the sea surface affects Doppler spectra measured by a CW (Continuous wave) Doppler radar. Therefore the relation between the microwave irradiation width and the Doppler spectra is evaluated numerically. We have shown the suitable condition for wave height estimation by a Doppler radar. 3. River observation (Water level observation): We have also evaluated algorithms to estimate water current and water level of river. The same algorithms to estimate sea surface current and sea surface level are applied to the river observation. The simulation is conducted to confirm the accuracy of the river observation by using a pulse Doppler radar. 4. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image: SAR images are helpful to observe the global sea surface. However, imaging mechanisms are complicated and validation of analytical algorithms by SAR images is quite difficult. In order to deal with the problems, SAR images in oceanic scenes are simulated.
The standard(KS D 3631) should be obey for using fuel gas pipe in Korea and a carbon steel pipe is coated with synthetic resine for protecting the corrosion. The coating is just performed for anti-corrosion, and actual strength of pipe is given by the carbon steel pipe when the fuel gas is transported. When the flaws are occurred in the steel pipe, the estimation method which is used for residual strength is necessary. But the suitable method is not exist for applying the fuel gas pipe. Eventually, the residual strength is estimated by overseas regulation such as ASME B31G or DNV RP F101. But the method based on the relative regulations are not sufficiently valid and it can not estimate the 85% over even. Therefore, the test was performed for validation with pipe specimen. The specimen was made with artificial flaw. The test results showed the certain differences according to flaw depth and DNV RP F101 is suitable to estimate the residual strength in Korea. The results in this paper contain in case of the severe flaw depth and suitable mode for Korea, so the result can be expected as valuable and widely used in various field.
An algorithm is developed to derive a representative I hr-unit hydrograph through an analysis of rainfall-runoff relations of a watershed as a closed system. For the base flow seperation of a flood hydrograph the multi-deflection method is proposed herein, which gace better results compared with those by the existing empirical methods. A modified $\Phi$index method is also proposed in this stidy to determine the time distribution rainfall excess of a rainstorm, which is essetially a modification of the commonly used $\Phi$index method of rainfall seperation. With the so-obtained rainfall excess hyetograph and the direct runoff hydrograph a trial and error computation of the ordinates of 1 hr-unit hydrograph was executed in such a manner that the synthesized flood hydrograph closely approximates the observed one, thus resulting a unit hydrograph of a piecewise exponential function type. To verify the validity of this study the 1 hr-unit hydrographs for the Imha and Dongchon in Nagdong River basin, and Yongdam in Geum River basin were derived by this algorithm, and the results were compared with those by the conventional synthetic unit hydrograph method and the Nakayasu method. Besides, the validity of this stiudy was also tested by comparing the observed hydrograph with the one computed by applying the unit hydrograph to a specific rainfall event. To generalize the result of this study a computer program, consisited of a main and three subprograns (for rainfall excess estimation, convolution summation, and sorting), is developed as a package, which is believed to be applicable to other watersheds for the similar purpose as those in this study.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of Single Linear Reservoir (SLR) model for runoff computations of small river basins in Korea. In the existing watershed flood routing methods the storage coefficient(K), which is the dominant parameter in the model, has been proposed to be computed in terms of the wqtershed characteristics. However, in the prsent study, the rainfall characteristics in addition to the watershed characteristics were taken into account in the multiple regression analysis for more accurate estimation of storage coefficient. The parameters finally adopted for the regressions were the drainge are, mean stream slope of the watershed, and the duration and total dffective amount of rainfalls. To verify the applicability of SLR model the computed results by SLR model with K determined by the regression equation were compared with the observed gydrographs, and also with those by other runoff computation methods; namely, the Clark method, nakayasu's synthetic unit hydrograph method and Nash model. The results showed that the present zSLR model gave the best results among these methods in the case of small river basins, but for the whatersheds with significant draingage area the Clark method gave the best results. However, it was speculated that the SLR model could also be accurately applied for flood compuatation in large wagersheds provided that the regression for storage coefficients were made with the actual data obtained in the large river basins.

In this study, we investigated the effect of factors that influence the measurement of smoke density using synthetic rubber flooring. The characteristics of rolling stock in an enclosed environment can cause enormous loss of life by smoke inhalation during fires inside passenger cars. The amount of smoke generation from interior materials for rolling stock is strictly restricted domestically and in other countries. Precise measurement of smoke density is therefore required to assess the fire performance of interior materials. Major factors that influence the measurement of smoke density include the uniformity of the specimen, the variations in conditions and instruments, and the operational and maintenance environment of the instruments. The contribution of factors was analyzed by estimating the uncertainty to investigate the contribution ratios of the major factors. The results show a contribution ratio of about 86% for the variation from the measurement of light transmission using a photomultiplier tube. Thus, this factor was the most representative for the measurement of smoke density. The contribution ratio of the other factors was low at about 11%, including irradiant flux conditions (${\pm}0.5 kW/m^2$) and the influence of the operational and maintenance environment of the instrument. These results were obtained using specimens with high uniformity.

The generation of construction waste can be divided into a decommissioning phase and a new construction phase, and most of the waste is generated at the decommissioning stage. However, recently, domestic new construction construction has expanded to 150 trillion yards per year, so construction work is increasing rapidly. Especially, as the size of the construction work with much waste of construction waste exceeds 100 trillion, the management of the amount of construction waste in the new construction site is required. Unlike the dismantling work site, the new construction site can separate waste generated by each property, and relatively low foreign matter content is generated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the amount of construction waste generated by new construction sites and to calculate the unit amount of construction waste based on this. In addition, since the existing unit cost is centered on concrete and mixed waste, we set the basic unit by setting synthetic resin, waste wood, and waste board as additional items. The basic unit survey was carried out to investigate the wastes according to the characteristics of each construction period. As a result of the survey, the new construction site showed that most wastes were discharged in the first 30% and after 70% of the process, and the ratio of mixed construction waste was as high as 45%. As a result of this study, it was found that about twice as much waste was produced as compared with the conventional standard product.
