A Noise Re-radiation Calibration Technique in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radiometer for Sub-Y-type Array at Ka-Band

  • To overcome with large size noise source distribution network design difficulty in interferometric radiometer system, especially for sub-Y-type array, a new on-board calibration technique using noise re-radiation is proposed in this paper. The suggested calibration technique is using noise re-radiation effect of center antenna after noise source injection from matched load. This approach is especially proper to sub-Y-type array interferometric synthetic aperture radiometer in mm-wave frequency band. Compared with noise injection network of a conventional synthetic aperture radiometer, the system mass, volume, and hardware complexity is reduced and cost-effective. Only one internal noise source, matched load, is used for injection using noise re-radiation technique a small set of sub-Y receiver channels is calibrated. Detailed calibration scenario is discussed and simulation results about noise re­radiation effect are presented.

  • In this paper, theoretical channels model of Synthetic Aperture Radiometer is presented. Based on this model, how amplitude imbalance, phase imbalance and mutual coupling between the different channels effect brightness temperature image retrieving is analyzed. The computer simulation results are also presented to find out the cause of the along-track streaks usually appeared in the retrieved brightness temperature image. In addition, a new system calibration approach is introduced to solve this problem.

  • Recently the interferometric synthetic aperture radiometer with sub-Y-type antenna array was suggested to improve the spatial resolution than that of conventional Y-type with the same number of antenna elements. The sub-Y-type performance has been reported under a point source target. In this paper, the performance of sub-Y-type is evaluated under contiguous objects. The angular resolution of sub-Y-type with 52 antennas was compared with that of Y-type with the 40 antennas. The images of sub-Y -type and Y-type array were simulated under the contiguous objects. The sub-Y-type showed higher resolution than Y-type in the simulation and experiments. The sub-Y-type has high spatial resolution than Y-type in case of contiguous source as well as single point source.

  • Aperture synthesis with platform motion has been presented as a useful tool to achieve the high spatial resolution imaging. Using a motion induced synthetic aperture radiometer (MISAR), a passive microwave image can be achieved with a small number of antennas. Moreover, the MISAR is capable of imaging better than the case without motion, using the same configuration of antenna array. With a platform motion, visibility can be sampled more efficiently, and as a result the imaging performance of the MISAR shows higher quality than the case without platform motion. In this paper, the advantage of MISAR is demonstrated experimentally. Using a laboratory model of inteferometric radiometer, the point source images are obtained under the condition with platform motion and without platform motion. In the experimental results, the point source response of the MISAR shows better quality of sidelobe level and beam efficiency than the case without platform motion.

  • The imaging characteristics of a 2-D interferometric synthetic aperture radiometer, such as an angular resolution, depend largely on the type of an antenna array. In this paper, different array configurations of antenna are studied and compared with each array types to get more high resolution image in spatial. T-, X- and Y- types of antenna array are considered and the performances of each type are analyzed considering spatial resolution. The simulation results of candidate antenna types are presented in this paper. In case of Y-type the coverage area of the visibility function is wide and the angular resolution is high more than the others. X-type array shows the good performance for side lobe level.

  • 본 논문에서는 2 안테나 합성 개구 마이크로파 방사계에 있어서 최적의 출력 지향 특성을 얻기 위한 안테나 구성방법에 관하여 검토하였다. 지향 특성이 서로 다른 4 종류의 안테나를 이용한 4가지 구성법의 각각에 있어서 출력의 지향성을 수치계산으로 구하여 주 빔폭, 부 로브의 레벨 및 위치 등을 서로 비교 고찰함과 동시에 그 원인에 대해서도 분석하였다. 개구면의 전류분포가 균일한 안테나로 구성한 경우가 다른 3 종류의 경우보다 아주 우수한 지향 특성을 나타내었다. 특히 부 로브 레벨 및 빔 효율 면에서 현저한 차가 있었다.

  • The microwave instruments are used many areas of the space remote sensing and space science applications. The imaging radar of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is well known microwave radar sensor for earth surface and ocean research. Unlike radar, microwave radiometer is passive instrument and it measures the emission energy of target, i.e. brightness temperature BT, from earth surface and atmosphere. From measured BT, the geophysical data like cloud liquid water, water vapor, sea surface temperature, surface permittivity can be retrieved. In this paper, the radiometer characteristics, system configuration and principle of BT measurement are described. Also the radiometer instruments TRMM, GPM, SMOS for earth climate, and ocean salinity research are introduce. As first korean microwave payload on STSAT-2, the DREAM (Dual-channels Radiometer for Earth and Atmosphere Monitoring) is described the mission, system configuration and operation plan for life time of two years. The main issues of DREAM unlike other spaceborne radiometers, will be addressed. The calibration is the one of main issues of DREAM mission and how it contribute on the space borne radiometer. In conclusion, the radiometer instrument to space science application will be considered.

Research on Digital Complex-Correlator of Synthetic Aperture Radiometer: theory and simulation result

  • A new digital correlator fur an airborne synthetic aperture radiometer was designed in order to replace the conventional analog correlator unit which will become very complicated while the number of channels is increasing. The digital correlator uses digital IQ demodulator instead of the intermediate frequency (IF) phase shifter to make the correlation processing performed digitally at base band instead of analogly at IF. This technique has been applied to the digital receiver in softradio. The down-converted IF signals from each pair of receiver channels become low rate base-band digital signals after under-sampled, Digitally Down-Converted (DDC), decimated and filtered by FIR filters. The digital signals are further processed by two digital multipliers (complex correlation), the products are integrated by the integrators and finally the outputs from the integrators compose of the real part and the imaginary part of a sample of the visibility function. This design is tested by comparing the results from digital correlators and that from analog correlators. They are agreed with each other very well. Due to the fact that the digital correlators are realized with the help of Analog-Digital Converter (ADC) chips and the FPGA technology, the realized volume, mass, power consumption and complexity turned out to be greatly reduced compared with that of the analog correlators. Simulations show that the resolution of ADC has an influence on the synthesized antenna patterns, but this can be neglected if more than 2bit is used.

  • 유럽 우주국 (ESA)에서 지구 탐사 계획의 일환으로 개발한 두 번째 위성인 SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) 위성이 지난 2009년 11월 발사되어 궤도에 안착, 운행 중에 있다. SMOS는 탑재된 L 대역 합성 개구형 라디오미터를 이용하여 상시 전지구적으로 토양 수분량과 해양 염도를 측정하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 통하여 지구의 물순환 및 기상, 기후 연구에 주요한 데이터를 얻을 수 있다. 본 글은 SMOS 발사와 관련된 개괄적인 연구 개발과 현재 운용 현황에 대해 설명한다.

Experimental Results of Sub-Y-Type Array for High Angular Resolution Interferometric Radiometer at 37 GHz

  • The Sub-Y-type array is proposed to decrease the number of antennas keeping same resolution or to use same number of antennas in order to have a narrow 3dB beamwidth. When the sub-Y-type array is des igned with 136 antennas for comparison with MIRAS, the reduction rate is theoretically 30 %. The proposed ideas are evaluated by experimental interferometric radiometer at 37 GHz.
