This paper describes syntactic pattern recognition algorithm for pattern recognition and diagnostic parameter extraction of ECG signal. ECG signal which is represented linguistic string is evaluated by pattern grammar and its interpreter-LALR(1) parser for pattern recognition. The proposed pattern grammar performs syntactic analysis and semantic evaluation simultaneously. The performance of proposed algorithm has been evaluated using CSE database.
In this study, the prosodic disambiguation of the syntactic attachment differences was investigated in relation to the effect of lexical bias. Speech materials were composed of N1-conj-N2-PP phrases such as "walkers and runners with dogs." The results show that the use of durational pattern is dominant over the pitch pattern to differentiate the attachment differences. The characteristic pitch contour was the rise and fall over N1 and N2 in the high attachment. The pitch contour in the low attachment was the rise and fall over N2 and N3 although the frequency of such patterns was lower for the low attachment case. For the durational pattern, the lengthening in the N2 region plays a significant role in the disambiguation of the syntactic attachments. The interaction between the lexical bias and the syntactic attachment was not statistically significant in the duration data.
This paper present s a pattern generation scheme from financial charts. The patterns constitute knowledge which consists of patterns as the conditional part and the impact of the pattern as the conclusion part. The patterns in charts are represented in a syntactic approach. If the pattern elements and the impact of patterns are defined, the patterns are synthesized from simple to the more highly credible by evaluating each intermediate pattern from the instances. The overall process is divided into primitive discovery by Genetic Algorithms and pattern synthesis from the discovered primitives by the Syntactic Pattern-based Inductive Learning (SYNPLE) algorithm which we have developed. We have applied the scheme to a chart : the trend lines of stock price in daily base. The scheme can generate very credible patterns from training data sets.

The syntactic pattern recognition system of Korean characters is composed of three main functional parts; Preprocessing, Graph-representation, and Segmentation. In preprocessing routine, the input pattern has been thinned using the Hilditch's thinning algorithm. The graph-representation is the detection of a number of nodes over the input pattern and codification of branches between nodes by 8 directional components. Next, segmentation routine which has been implemented by top down nondeterministic parsing under the control of tree grammar identifies parts of the graph-represented Pattern as basic components of Korean characters. The authors have made sure that this system is effective for recognizing Korean characters through the recognition simulations by digital computer.
This paper describes the method of syntactic-semantic pattern recognition and description for two dimensional object which is adjusted or changed in size and its orientation. To avoid the complexity and ambiguity which is arised in the case of syntactic or decision-theoretic method is used individually, an attributed grammar is introduced which applies computative attributes to pattern primitives, and then uses decision-theoretic method for attributes and syntactic method for pattern structure. A primitive extraction embedding parsing and grobal rule for classification is also applied for more effective pattern recognition and description.

In this paper, a general fuzzy syntactic method for recognition of flaw patterns and for the measurement of flaw characteristic parameters for a non-destructive inspections signal, called eddy-current, is presented. Solutions are given to the subtasks of primitive pattern selection, signal to symbol transformation, pattern grammar formulation, and event-synchronous flaw pattern extraction based on the grammars. Fuzzy attribute grammars are used as the model for the pattern grammar because of their descriptive power in the face of uncertain constraints caused by nose or distortion in the signal waveform, due to their ability to handle syntactic as well as semantic information. This approach has been implemented and the performance of eh resultant system has been evaluated using a library of law patterns obtained from steam generator tubes in nuclear power plants by an eddy current-based non-destructive inspection method.
This paper describes the Korean Question answering system using the syntactic-relation information d verbs to overcome lack of reliable knowledge and linguistic resources. The syntactic-relation information consists d the original form d a verb, usual usage pattern, semantic category of each dependent noun, synonym verbs and passive verbs. We use the syntactic-relation information to parse sentences or phrases with usual usage pattern of the verb and semantic conditions of dependent components on the verb. We also use that information to parse answer candidate sentences, and find an answer from questioned case slot. Our experiments that usage of the syntactic-relation information of verbs to mm lack of reliable knowledge and linguistic resources can be utilized efficiently for the Korean question answering system.
An extended form of lexical network is explored by presenting U-WIN, which applies lexical relations that include not only semantic relations but also conceptual relations, morphological relations and syntactic relations, in a way different with existing lexical networks that have been centered around linking structures with semantic relations. So, This study introduces the new methodology for constructing a syntactic relation automatically. First of all, we extract probable nouns which related to verb based on verb's sentence type. However we should decided the extracted noun's meaning because extracted noun has many meanings. So in this study, we propose that noun's meaning is decided by the example matching rule/syntactic pattern/semantic similarity, frequency information. In addition, syntactic pattern is expanded using nouns which have high frequency in corpora.
This paper investigates the manner in which various. syntactic structures with a single meaning implement a consistent intonational pattern by examining English conditional clauses. In the phonetic experiment, we explore the edge tones in three different syntactic clauses which are semantically interpreted as a single conditional meaning (an if-clause, a clause with no if. and a clause with no if but followed by and) and compare them with the edge tone realized in a clause which is not interpreted as a conditional meaning. We also investigate the tonal differences resulting from the semantic difference between conditional and non-conditional meanings. That is, the conditional clauses expressed in three different syntactic structures show a consistent intonational pattern in their clausefinal boundaries; a rising contour (H- or H%) is realized at the edge of the intermediate phrases (ip) or intonational phrases (IP) in 89% of the if-clauses, 72% of the clauses with no if, and 79% of the clauses with no if but followed by and. On the other hand, 82% of the non-conditional clauses have a falling contour (L- or L-L%) in their final edge. Statistically, Chi-Square tests show that these percentages are all significantly higher, which suggests that a conditional meaning implements a consistent intonational pattern though it is expressed through different syntactic structures. Therefore, the result supports Bolinger's (1989) claim that intonation makes an important contribution to discourse interpretation.
